Robert Francis Prevost Elected First American Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV

Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope of the Catholic Church on Thursday, becoming the first pontiff from the United States.

A moderate figure and close ally of the late Pope Francis, Prevost has chosen the papal name Leo XIV. He brings years of missionary experience in Peru to his new role.
