Following the fatal accident at Felele, Kogi state which claimed the lives of innocent students, the Zinariyan of Lokoja, Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu has extended her sympathy to the families of the deceased.

Dr Aliyu, in a statement on Tuesday, described the loss as painful and devastating, adding that no words could explain the pain of losing a loved one.

She said: “It is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the students who lost their lives in a fatal accident on 17th February 2025, in Felele, near the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State. Our hearts are broken as we grapple with the pain of losing precious lives that held so much promise and potential.

“As a mother and a leader, I share in the immeasurable grief of those who have lost their loved ones. No words can capture the sorrow or ease the pain, but I pray that the Almighty grants all affected families, as well as the University the strength and comfort to endure this devastating loss. Let us all stand in unity during this difficult time, offering each other solace and support.”

To avert further fatalities, the Kogi Princess stressed that relevant authorities take steps that safeguard lives.

She also called for sensitisation programs that would instill safety culture on road users, making sure that roads do not become death traps.

“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent future accidents of this magnitude. I urge the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lokoja Local Government Authorities to immediately conduct a safety audit of our roads, particularly in high-risk areas like Felele. Measures such as speed limit enforcement, the installation of speed bumps, and pedestrian crossings should be considered where applicable to ensure the safety of all road users.

“Furthermore, public enlightenment campaigns on road safety must be intensified, with both drivers and pedestrians being educated on responsible road behaviour. Our roads should not be death traps but safe passageways for education, commerce, and life. The time for action is now to prevent the needless loss of more lives.

“As we mourn, let us honour the memories of these young souls by working together to create a safer Lokoja for future generations. May their souls rest in eternal peace, and may their tragic passing not be in vain,” Dr Aliyu said.
