Coalition of Independent National Electoral Commission Accredited Civil Society Election Observer Groups has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately relieve the INEC chairman , Prof Mahmood Yakubu of his position over his abysmal failure to conduct free and fair elections in the country.
It also called for the holistic reform of the electoral laws as well as implement the Uwais Panel report on the appointment of the nation’s Chief electoral officer.
The coalition in a press conference yesterday in Abuja by it’s Team leader Comrade Victor Kalu alleged that INEC has shown itself totally incapable of instilling confidence and trust in the people, adding that all efforts to ensure that INEC redeem itself has failed.
“We have in our custody overwhelming and incontrovertible evidence to show that the level of electoral fraud that took place in Edo State as far as the last governorship was concerned is patently unprecedented and explains why our coalition is alarmed that if something is not done to redress this blatant disregard and violation of extant electoral laws , a very dangerous precedence would have been set, one that can ultimately undermine and erode confidence in the electoral process and democracy at large”
The coalition said it was convinced that a genuine and holistic reform and full implementation of the report will help usher in a new era of electoral process that will be devoid of cycle of litigations.
The Coalition equally urged the judiciary to rescue Nigerian democracy from the forces bent on derailing democratic process.
” It is the contention of this coalition that the judiciary must now take a deeper look at all the evidence at it’s disposal with a view to reaching a just and fair judgement that will ultimately restore confidence and trust in our electoral jurisprudence “
