From Henry Ibya, Makurdi
Benue State government has blamed the delay in the distribution of food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, on the unrest caused by the recent nationwide end bad governance protests, and the unfortunate incident of food diversion.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Makurdi during this month’s distribution of relief materials to displaced persons, Executive Secretary of Benue State Emergency Management Agency, BSEMA, James Iorpuu lamented that the crisis had affected the agency’s ability to reach out to these vulnerable populations in a timely manner.
He said in response to the increasing security risks surrounding operations at BSEMA, the organisation has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of assets and personnel by engaging the services of a security expert on consultancy basis to provide security advice on ways to strengthen security in the premises.
Iorpuu assured that his administration is working diligently to resolve the issues and has taken significant steps to ensure that such disruptions do not hinder the agency’s relief efforts.
He also expressed gratitude to partners, including UN agencies, local and international partners, particularly UNHCR, UNFPA and IOM for their support in alleviating the suffering of IDPs.
Iorpuu announced that the construction of 50 units of shelters in Nyihemba, Kwande Local Government Area, will commence this month, marking a new chapter in the lives of displaced populations.
He also disclosed to journalists during the briefing that BSEMA has successfully treated over 15 cases of snake bites across various camps, expressing appreciation for the swift action of its health team and partner support.
While urging partners to continue to support the agency in addressing medical needs and other challenges facing IDPs, the executive secretary also announced that BSEMA is ready to commence IDP farm projects in Kwande, Logo and Gwer-West Local Government Areas, representing hope, empowerment and self-reliance for displaced communities.
He thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for his unwavering support, including the donation of a tractor for the IDP farm project, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency’s, NEMA, recent donation of 1,347 cartons of liquid fertiliser to Benue State, adding that it will enhance the productivity of the farm project.
