ZAWFOG Leads Environmental Fight With Annual Tree Waqf Initiative

From Rabilu Abubakar, Gombe

Zakah and Waqf Foundation of Gombe, ZAWFOG, has intensified its campaign against indiscriminate tree felling with the launch of its seventh Annual Tree Waqf Campaign in Majidadi, Shongom Local Government Area.

Chairman of the Foundation, Dr Abdullahi Lamido, described uncontrolled deforestation as a “silent destroyer” fueling flooding, erosion and climate change in the state.

“Cutting down trees without replanting is corruption against nature. Islam teaches us to preserve the environment and planting a tree is a continuous charity that benefits generations,” he said.

This year, thousands of seedlings including mango, guava, cashew, moringa and eucalyptus will be freely distributed to households, schools, mosques and public spaces across eight benefiting local government areas.

The Village Head of Majidadi, Alhaji Adamu Madugu, vowed to enforce local bylaws mandating anyone who cuts a tree to plant two replacements, warning that neglecting seedlings will no longer be tolerated.

The campaign includes sermons in mosques, public lectures and advocacy to promote sustainable planting and protect communities from environmental disasters.
