Two people have lost their lives in a road accident that occurred at Leme along the Abeokuta–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributing the fatal crash to excessive speeding.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Odunsin.
According to the statement, the crash happened at about 5:45 p.m. and involved a black Lexus car bearing registration number KJA 398 JR and a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AYT 837 QU.
Odunsin disclosed that FRSC rescue personnel received the emergency alert at about 5:50 p.m., arrived at the accident scene by 5:55 p.m., and commenced rescue operations immediately.
He said a total of six adult males were involved in the collision.
“Unfortunately, two adult males lost their lives, while no injury was recorded among the other persons involved,” the statement said.
The FRSC spokesperson explained that officers evacuated the victims from the scene and deposited the bodies of the deceased at the State Hospital, Ijaye Mortuary, in Abeokuta.
He added that officials also recovered personal belongings belonging to the victims, including an identity card and a mobile phone, before clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow along the busy highway.
Odunsin quoted the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, as expressing sympathy to the families of those who died in the accident.
The sector commander also urged motorists and motorcyclists to obey traffic regulations, particularly speed limits, to reduce the frequency of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
He stressed that speeding remains one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents because it significantly reduces drivers’ reaction time and increases the impact of collisions.
Ogunjobi called on all road users to exercise caution, remain alert while driving and avoid reckless behaviour capable of endangering lives and property.
He reiterated the commitment of the Federal Road Safety Corps to improving road safety through sustained enforcement of traffic regulations, public awareness campaigns and prompt emergency response services.
The sector commander further encouraged members of the public to report road crashes and other traffic emergencies through the FRSC National Emergency Toll-Free Number 122 or the nearest FRSC patrol team to facilitate timely rescue operations.
The FRSC has continued to intensify campaigns against speeding and dangerous driving as part of efforts to reduce road traffic fatalities across the country.
