Three members of a local vigilante group were reportedly killed on Saturday night after suspected gunmen launched an attack on Sabon-Layi community in Gwol District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred at about 10 p.m., has renewed fears over the persistent security challenges confronting communities in the area.
According to local sources, the attackers invaded the community under the cover of darkness and specifically targeted vigilante operatives who were on security duty at the time of the assault.
The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, Mr. Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident on Sunday, describing the killings as a major setback to the community’s efforts to protect residents from recurring attacks.
Tengwong explained that the slain vigilantes were members of a community-based security outfit established to complement official security agencies in safeguarding lives and property.
He expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Barkin Ladi, noting that many residents continue to live in fear despite the presence of security personnel in the area.
“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” Tengwong said.
He appealed to both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to reinforce security operations in the area by deploying additional personnel capable of preventing further attacks.
According to him, strengthening security is essential to restoring confidence among residents and curbing the repeated assaults on vulnerable communities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, for comments were unsuccessful.
The latest attack adds to the series of violent incidents that have continued to affect several communities in Plateau State, particularly in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where residents have repeatedly called for improved security measures.
