Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly arrested by security operatives at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, shortly after attending the court session of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, who led Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, was said to have escaped arrest earlier in the week when police officers rounded up several demonstrators during the rally.
The protest, which called for the immediate release of Kanu, led to the arrest of 13 persons, including Kanu’s brother and one of his lawyers.
Sowore later took to social media to confirm the arrests, accusing the authorities of repression and vowing to continue advocating for the rights of detained activists.
As of press time, the exact reason for Sowore’s arrest remained unclear. However, sources suggested it might be linked to his involvement in the Monday protest and alleged defiance of police directives.
Efforts to reach the police for an official statement on the incident were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
