Senate To Screen  INEC Chairman-nominee Today

Senate will today (Thursday) screen Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the substantive Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. 

A notice issued by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary, Research and Information, Bullah  Bi-Allah, said lawmakers would conduct the screening at the Senate Chamber.

Amupitan, a Professor of Law at the University of Jos where he currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), was nominated by  President Bola Tinubu after the Council of State unanimously endorsed his appointment to lead the electoral body.

Amupitan is widely regarded in legal and academic circles for his contributions to governance, judicial reforms and the development of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

At 58, the INEC chair-nominee is widely respected in academic and legal circles for his depth of knowledge in constitutional law, governance and judicial reforms.

A native of Kogi State, Amupitan obtained his law degree from the University of Jos and was called to the Nigerian Bar after completing his training at the Nigerian Law School.

If confirmed, he will succeed Mahmood Yakubu who bowed out as INEC Chairman on October 7.
