Fears Mount In Lebanon Of Wider War As Hezbollah Vows Retaliation

0

Security measures in Lebanon increased on Thursday following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday morning.

This, in turn, came after the assassination of senior Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr on Tuesday night in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Hezbollah asked those in southern towns not to film security events and to disconnect fixed surveillance cameras from the internet, which it claimed was “infiltrated by Israel.”

Caution prevailed on the southern front, interrupted by Israeli raids and shelling on border towns.

In an effort to contain any deterioration in security, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Defense Secretary John Healey arrived in Beirut for talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib.

Lammy called on “all parties to respect and implement Resolution 1701 and all its provisions and stipulations.”

Healy commended “the partnership between the Lebanese and British armies” and called for “addressing all conflicts through dialogue and diplomatic means, as the violence will have dire consequences for everyone.”

Berri informed the British delegation “that Lebanon does not want war but is ready to defend itself, and Israeli arrogance is dragging the region toward unpredictable dangers.”

Mikati said Lebanon appreciated the message of support from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, conveyed by the two secretaries of state.

He stressed that “Israel has violated Lebanese sovereignty and attacked our land, in violation of international laws, and it assaults civilians blatantly every day” and added: “The solution can only be political by implementing international resolutions, including UN Resolution 1701.”

He called on Britain and the international community to “put pressure on Israel to stop its aggression.”

Mikati’s appeal came as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs filed a complaint with the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general through its permanent mission in New York.

The ministry called on Security Council members “to condemn the Israeli cyberattacks on Lebanon, which pose a serious threat to civil aviation services and endanger the security and safety of communication networks, devices, applications, and electronic data in vital Lebanese facilities.”

The ministry’s actions are based on a report from the Lebanese Ministry of Telecommunications, which revealed: “The source of GPS jamming is in northern Israel and caused a decline in the accuracy of positioning in Lebanon, affecting transport and communication services.

“Repeated warnings from the Network Time Protocol server were reported, showing the frequent loss of GPS signals and a decline in the quality of service and user experience for mobile network operators.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also requested its permanent mission in Geneva to file a complaint with the International Telecommunication Union, calling for necessary technical measures to stop such attacks and assist Lebanon in ensuring proper functioning of its communication networks.

Also on Thursday, Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Alaa Moussa discussed the latest developments with Berri.

The envoy affirmed Egypt’s rejection of any aggression against Lebanon and highlighted Egypt’s support.

Moussa stressed the importance of calm as expansion of the conflict would result in dire consequences for both Lebanon and the entire region.

“We have already warned that the Israeli aggression against Gaza will expand the cycle of violence circle and confrontations on many and multiple fronts, which actually happened in the past days,” he said.

The ambassador conveyed a message from Egypt that warned “resorting to political assassinations and the consequences resulting of this approach that will lead us into a vicious circle.”

Moussa added the international community must assume their responsibilities through the UN Security Council by issuing a binding resolution to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, achieving de-escalation on all fronts and especially in south Lebanon.

The body of Hezbollah’s Fouad Shukr was found under the debris of a residential building in Haret Hreik, along with a second body that was identified as Iranian adviser Milad Bedi. The bodies of Hanaa Bashire and her daughter, Dr. Salwa Zuhair Al-Bitar, who lived in the targeted building, were also recovered. This brings the total number of Israeli airstrike victims to eight, two of whom were children.

Iranian news agencies reported that Bedi was a “military adviser of Al-Quds Force, the overseas arm of the Revolutionary Guards.

Shortly before Shukr’s funeral, Hezbollah hung giant portraits of him bearing the words “Fuad Al-Muqawama”, Arabic for “the heart of resilience”, on roads to the south.

The Lebanese people held their breath on Thursday amid fears of retaliation from Hezbollah and Iran.

Private institutions in Beirut shortened working hours for employees to 4 p.m., an hour before Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah’s speech at Shukr’s funeral procession.

Nasrallah warned the group was bound to respond to the killing and said the deaths of both Shukr and the Hamas leader “crossed red lines.”

Slain Hamas Chief Haniyeh To Be Buried In Qatar

0

Qatar on Friday is due to hold funeral ceremonies for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh after his killing in Tehran, an attack blamed on Israel that has deepened fears of a regional escalation.

Haniyeh, the Palestinian armed group’s political chief, had resided in Doha along with other members of the Hamas political office.

He will be buried at a cemetery in Lusail, north of the Qatari capital, following funeral prayers at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab mosque, the gas-rich emirate’s largest.

His killing sparked calls for revenge and is among several incidents that have inflamed regional tensions during the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas which has drawn in Iran-backed militant groups in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

Hamas has said that “Arab and Islamic leaders” as well as representatives of other Palestinian factions and members of the public would attend the events.

Haniyeh and a bodyguard were killed in the pre-dawn attack on their accommodation in Tehran early on Wednesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said.

He had traveled to Iran to attend Tuesday’s swearing-in of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Israel, accused by Hamas, Iran and others of the attack, has not directly commented on it.

The Hamas leader’s assassination came just hours after Israel struck a southern suburb of Beirut, killing Fuad Shukr, the military commander of Hamas-allied Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

In Tehran on Thursday, crowds of mourners paid their respects during a public funeral ceremony for Haniyeh.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the prayers, having earlier threatened “harsh punishment” for his killing.

Days of mourning

Turkiye and Pakistan announced a day of mourning on Friday in honor of Haniyeh, while Hamas has called for a “day of furious rage” to coincide with the burial.

The Palestinian group encouraged “roaring anger marches… from every mosque” following Friday prayers to protest Haniyeh’s killing as well as the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to destroy Hamas in retaliation for its October 7 attack on Israel that ignited the war in Gaza.

That attack resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants also seized 251 hostages, 111 of whom are still held captive in Gaza, including 39 the military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign against Hamas has killed at least 39,480 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry, which does not give details of civilian and militant deaths.

Haniyeh’s coffin arrived in Doha on Thursday afternoon, Qatar-based network Al Jazeera reported, broadcasting images of a convoy including internal security force vehicles traveling down Doha’s shore-hugging corniche road.

Qatar has hosted Hamas’s political bureau with the blessing of the United States since 2012 following the Palestinian militant group’s closure of its office in Damascus.

Haniyeh had played a key role in talks for a potential truce in Gaza, liaising with mediators Qatar, which has led months of behind-the-scenes negotiations alongside Egypt and the United States.

US President Joe Biden said late on Thursday that he was “very concerned” about rising tensions in the region and added that the killing of Haniyeh had “not helped” the situation.

The White House said Biden spoke with Netanyahu by telephone on Thursday, promising to defend Israel’s security “against all threats from Iran.”

“We have the basis for a ceasefire. He should move on it and they should move on it now,” Biden told reporters after the call.

Reacting to Haniyeh’s death, Qatar’s prime minister said the killing had thrown the Gaza war mediation process into doubt.

“How can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side?” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on social media site X.

The international community called for calm and a focus on securing a ceasefire in Gaza, which Haniyeh had accused Israel of obstructing.

Israel warned its adversaries on Thursday that they would “pay a very high price” for any “aggression.”

“Israel is at a very high level of preparation for any scenario, both defensive and offensive,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

“Those who attack us, we will attack in return.”

Aiyedatiwa’s appreciation is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure by his spokesperson, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Aiyedatiwa said that the people of Ondo State went about their civic and economic activities with the usual orderliness without any security incident in the state.

He appreciated the people for heeding his pleas for understanding, calm and restraint ahead of the nationwide protests.

“I want to thank the good people of Ondo State for maintaining peace and not joining the nationwide protests.

“Even when we, as government, have acknowledged the economic challenges facing our nation and our people, we thank them for heeding our call for peace.

“I want to thank our students and youths, women, artisans and public servants, as well as Civil Society Organisations for fulfilling their promise to maintain the peace.

“I also thank our traditional rulers, religious leaders, labour leaders and all the security agencies in the State for their invaluable roles in making our state a peaceful one at this time.

“Our administration will not relent in its efforts to provide reliefs for our people as we strive to cushion the effects of the economic challenges in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who earlier monitored some parts of the state reported that the atmosphere was peaceful.

Some of the areas monitored included the FUTA-Road Block road, Akure-Owo road, Alagbaka-Secretariat Road, and Oke -Ijebu – Oba Adesida market road.

All Progressives Congress, APC, Concerned Residents stakeholders of Bwari Area Council, has commended the Federal Government for the transformative projects in FCT and appealed for interventions in the council.

Mr Mohammed Mubarak, the Coordinator of the group, said this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Mubarak appealed for effective service delivery and responsive governance in forms of welfare and social interventions as well as political appointments of Bwari Area Council residents in the FCT administration.

“The Federal Capital Territory Administration like other states is responsible for delivering essential services to its residents across the six area councils.

“We appeal to the Minister for political representation of residents in the FCT administration.

“Residents need to be appointed in the FCT administration because they are in the best position to understand the needs and challenges of their community and to drive the necessary changes needed in the council.

“We have experienced and qualified individuals with track records of performance in FCT who can help achieve the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu at the grassroots when appointed by the FCT administration”, he said.

Mubarak said that the council had the numerical strength to also drive success and make equitable distribution of dividends of democracy to reach the majority at the grassroots.

This fact, he said, had been proven during the 2023 general elections where residents won the House of Representatives and Senate of the FCT with a landmark victory.

He appealed to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, to appoint residents of the council to give them for a sense of belonging.

He added that the appointment would make residents and stakeholders of the area council to be involved in the administration’s plans, policies, and programmes.

Intelligence Report Exposed Senator As Sponsor Of Protest In Abuja – Wike

0

By Ismaila Jimoh, Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike has disclosed how intelligence report fingered a Senator as brain behind the hunger protest recorded in the nation’s capital.

Wike made this known at a press briefing in his office shortly after emergency Security Council meeting held in his office on Thursday night.

He however did not name the Senator.

The minister explained that even though it is citizens right to protest so that government can address what ever issue raised, protesters also need to act according to the rule of law, saying obeying rule of law is obeying Court orders.

According to him: “We have intelligence that a senator had to invite some security agencies to lead some of them to go and provide food for the protesters.

“That is sponsorship. A senator providing food for protesters. At the appropriate time security agencies will invite the senator and find out how you will be sponsoring this kind of thing against the government of the day.

“We believe that this is a democratic government and so we must act according to the rule of law. We also believe that this protesting it is their entitlement so that government can address the issues raised. Obeying the rule of law is obeying court orders.

“You are aware of the court order yesterday. The court did not stop protests, it only restricted them to the National Stadium.

“We had come out to say clearly that one of the reasons we appealed against the protest was that we believe some miscreants will hijack the process and cause destruction of property within the FCT.

“See what happened in some of the states today. Now, look at the loss of lives. If such a thing happens in the FCT, what do you think people would say? Here we have the international community carrying out their businesses.

Wike also disclosed that while miscreants may not have succeeded in what they wanted to do on Thursday, there is intelligence that they are coming back again to destroy property that will lead to loss of lives and security agencies will not allow that.

#EndBadGovernance: Despite FG’s Plea Nigerians Protest Nationwide

0

…Abuja, Lagos , Kano , Port Harcourt and  others witnessed peaceful match

…South East states observed sit-at-home

By Uche Onyeali (Abuja) SAMSON ALFA (MINNA), Hassan Jirgi (Damaturu), From Nwogha Ndubuisi (Abakaliki)

Despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government appeal to Nigerians to shelve the August 1, 2024 protest, the citizens took to the streets yesterday to register their displeasure  over rising economic hardship and unprecedented hunger, high inflation rate.

However, the protest unlike that of the  2020 #EndSARS that led the death of many Nigerian youths was largely adjudged  peaceful by many  across the country, though there were reports of looting .

In Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, the protesters trooped  out enmasse to exercise their constitutional right by conveying their messages to President Bola Tinubu and his team from in the nation’s capital, though protesters marched peacefully at the city centre with security operatives monitoring the procession.

For their proactive disposition, police operatives in the territory arrested a young man clutching a knife around the National Stadium in Abuja, with protesters believing he was poised stage an attack on them.

The man, bedecked in a wine and white T-shirt, looked terrified as police quizzed him on the object.

Around him, a crowd bellowed and bayed in anger.

Similarly, patrol helicopters were spotted hovering over the venue of the protest in the Ojota area of Lagos State.

Meanwhile, the protesters refused to converge in the Freedom Park garden, instead chose occupy the service lane.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the leaders of the protest, Tunji Abayomi claimed that it was an attempt to confine them.

“Originally, this is our traditional protest ground, but we won’t allow the government to confine us inside the garden”, he said.

Another protester, Steven Adams, said he was not ready to enter the garden, citing the incident that occurred at the Lekki toll gate during the #EndSARS protest.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade, had also visited the scene of the protest.

The Police boss, who arrived at about 11:25 am, was seen monitoring the activities of the protesters.

A mild drama, however, ensued when Fayoade entered the park to inspect the premises, as the protesters voiced their refusal to gather there.

He, however, left the scene of the protest a little while later.

The Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park in Ojota are the designated routes approved by the court for holding protests.

The protesters, who marched from Ikeja under the bridge, arrived in Ojota around 11: am.

However, as against appeals by the federal and state governments to organisers of the protest to apply caution and ensure that those who decide to go ahead with the marches do not take to violence, AljazirahNigeria learnt that some youths exploited the protest to vandalise both public and private property in some, in summer states.

For instance , on the first day of the protest, our correspondent reports, violence erupted at the Suleja axis of the Niger State where six were killed in a clash between the police and protesters.

AljazirahNigeria learnt that trouble started when about 1000 protesters stormed the streets of Suleja with various placards.

However, the procession went out control and police operatives monitoring the situation started dispersing the protesters with teargas.

According to eyewitnesses, in the ensuing turmoil, the protesters chased the Police to their station, resulting in counter attacks with teargas by both parties who headed towards the Suleja Area Command of Suleja where the hoodlums smashed and vandalised vehicles parked in the command’s premises.

In the vein, a statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the secretariat of Tafa Local Government Council was partially burnt down alongside other two cars by the hoodlums.

Abiodun added that the hoodlums looted properties at the secretariat, though the police and other security agencies responded immediately to the scene and arrested 11 miscreants with dangerous weapons, including firearms and also recover some looted properties.

The police spokesman further stated that the security agencies also responded swiftly to a blockade mounted by the miscreants along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway and at the old tollgate dispersed hoodlums.

While there were no demonstrations in Minna, the state capital, the police however quickly responded to some groups who were seen with dangerous weapons at the top Medical junction with mild tension at Kpakungu and environs.

In Yobe State, while the youths peacefully assembled and only pleaded with the federal government to restore petrol subsidy to ease the economic suffering of the people, Governor Mai Mala Buni however commended people of the state, especially the youths, for heeding calls against the protest, as the state is emerging out of a protracted security challenge.

“l am happy we are working on the same page, we clearly understand our situation, the state is just picking its pieces and we can not afford to accommodate anything including protest .In the same  vein ,  Kano, Kaduna , Port Harcourt recorded a very large turnout ,

While some states in other regions witnessed mild processions the entire South-Eastern part of the country boycotted the protest as directed by the apex-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

AljazirahNigeria reports that markets, stores and shops in many parts of the South-East were all opened for business yesterday.

It was gathered that commercial activities went on as usual in Nnewi and Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State, despite the tension across the country.

Commending Ndigbo for their approach to the protest, Ohanaeze said President Tinubu is not an enemy of the South-East, being the reason there is no protest in states of the region.

In a statement signed by the factional secretary-general, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze notes that the boycott of the protest by the people of South-East should convincingly spur  President Tinubu listen to the plea of leaders of the region and other Nigerians to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from custody.

“We, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, wish to express our profound gratitude to all Igbos at home and in the diaspora for their unwavering commitment to the decision to boycott the nationwide protests.

“The South-East region has shown a remarkable unity and resilience in standing against external pressures and manipulations aimed at using Igbo as sacrificial lambs for selfish political agendas.

“In conclusion, we urge all Ndigbo to remain steadfast and resolute in the face of any pressures or attempts to undermine our unity and progress. Let us continue to stand together in solidarity and work towards a brighter future for our people and our nation,” the statement said.

For its part, the Ebonyi State government applauded residents of the state for boycotting the the protest.

Speaking through Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Jude Okoro, the government said the disposition of the residents was a mark of patriotism.

“The government of Ebonyi State under Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, on behalf of the founding fathers of our dear state, political leaders at all levels, royal fathers and indeed, all stakeholders expresses  heartfelt gratitude to the entire people of the state, especially our cherished youths for harkening to the voice of reason and refusing to be lured into the proposed protest, which could truncate our collective efforts towards bettering our lots and those  of the future generations of our state,” the commissioner said.

Barring appeals for peaceful protests, hoodlums yesterday invaded the Digital Innovation Park in Kano, which belongs to the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, vandalising most of the facilities.

This happened just days to the scheduled launch of the tech hub.

Lamenting the level destruction at the facility, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani said the park was designed to support Nigeria’s technical talent accelerator programe (3MTT), was reportedly set ablaze and looted during the protests on Thursday.

“Sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters,” Tijani stated in a post via X on Thursday.

The incident occurred as part of wider unrest in Kano, where protesters targeted the yet-to-be-commissioned Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park.

Tijani highlighted the immediate impact of this destruction on planned initiatives.

“Alongside #3MTT, this building is set to host our buildathon holiday maker programme for secondary school kids starting next week,” he added.

The minister characterised the damage as a setback for the journey to deepening the workforce for technology and creating job opportunities for the youth.

“Millions of naira down the drain,” Tijani cried.

President Tinubu had recently vowed that no government would condone protests that would lead to destruction of lives and property.

President Tinubu, who spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he received Letters of Credence from the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills, Jr., said: “Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom. Some of your predecessors worked hard during our transition to democracy, and we remember the likes of Ambassador Howard Jeter.

‘’We look forward to Nigeria and the United States continuously working to expand cooperation on shared goals and democratic values.

‘’During the military era, we made our voices heard against dictatorship, and I was part of the group that engaged in peaceful protests without resorting to the destruction of property.

‘’We have worked hard to ensure 25 years of unbroken democracy and I will continue to maintain this democracy.

“In as much as we believe that demonstrations are part of democracy, we will never encourage any protests that lead to the destruction of lives and property.

“Nigeria is ready to play its role as the largest democracy in Africa that is worthy of emulation to other African countries, but we need more US partnership on the continent that is beneficial to both sides. We believe in freedom, and we are providing the leadership to make Nigeria’s economy grow.’’

Ambassador Mills affirmed US support for Nigeria’s democracy, and pledged support for bigger roles for Nigeria in the international arena.

“Nigeria is crucial to the United States because we share democratic values, and we are ready to give you all the support.

“I am here to make sure that the relationship blossoms both on democracy and the economic side,” Ambassador Mills said.

The president’s declaration came on a day the Department of State Services, DSS, warned against the nationwide protest just as Defence Headquarters, DHQ, also expressed concern over the possibility of the protest being hijacked by violent elements.

It also said intelligence reports had shown that there is a plot to replicate in the country what happened in Kenya.

However, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, said though it would not be participating in the protest, the police must protect the protesters to prevent hoodlums from hijacking it and also asked President Tinubu to review his government’s policy of floating the naira.

According to the labour movement, the flotation of the naira is partly responsible for the harsh economic conditions in the country.

Governor,Alia in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, released Thursday in Makurdi, commended organized labor, trade unions, civil society organizations, youth groups, and other stakeholders for heeding his call to refrain from participating in the protest.

Ododo Lauds Kogi Youths For Shunning Protest

ODODO

…Says Tinubu working hard to transform economy

By Uche Onyeali

Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State has commended youths for shunning what he termed ‘politically motivated protests’ in the country.

The governor said young Nigerians stood on the positive side of history for not giving up themselves to be used as agents of chaos.

Ododo, who described the youths as “a force for nation building and the bulwark of national development,” said the decision of Kogi youths to organise a summit that examined the roles of youths in nation building, showed that they are patriotic and believe in the transformative agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

The governor made these declarations while addressing multitude of youths in Lokoja during the Kogi Youth Engagement Summit with the theme; ‘The Role of Nigerian Youths in Nation Building.’

The youths opted out of the planned protest against hardship and bad governance and rather discussed the way forward for the country.

While commending them for not making themselves willing tools in the hands of desperate politicians, Ododo noted that President Tinubu had done a lot to change the narratives and highlighted many of the achievements of the present administration.

“In February 2023, you came out in your numbers to elect President Tinubu because of your faith in his love for Nigeria and his capacity to bring hope to our situation as a nation. It is heartwarming to note that your faith in his patriotism, capacity and commitment has remained unshaken.

“The theme of your engagement today, ‘The Role of Nigerian Youths in Nation Building’ could not have come at a better time than now. Nigeria is a nation of potentials. Unlocking these potentials will depend largely on the mindset of young Nigerians like you and I. The level of our nation is the level of our youth. A nation is carried on the strong back of the youth and we must begin to interrogate our roles in building a Nigeria of our dream,” the governor said.

Canvassing more support for the administration of President Tinubu, Ododo informed the youths that “under Tinubu’s administration, your opportunities are limitless.”

He noted that “with the Student Loan Scheme, children of the poor now have the chance to be educated to any level of their choice. He has successfully removed the financial barricades to ensure that every Nigerian child is educated. This will undoubtedly inspire many to hatch the many opportunities that education presents.

“In the last few months, the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy has opened up a lot of empowerment channels, empowering thousands of youths on digital skills. Oil is limited to its deposits. Solid minerals are limited to their volume of deposits. The opportunities that digital skills offer are limitless. Therefore, the president is opening windows of limitless opportunities for youths in Nigeria.

“In recent months under the dynamic leadership of Mr President, sub-nationals are beginning to benefit from the mineral resources in their states. Modalities are now in place to enable states take part in partnership for mineral resources exploration. This will expand the horizon for industrialisation and consequently open up more jobs for our youths.

“The many agricultural interventions have exposed more youths to agriculture which is the new gold globally. Hundreds of youths across the country are already benefitting from schemes that empower them to become big time farmers. They are doing their own protest by leveraging the available opportunities to produce more food for our people.

“As a governor, I can tell you authoritatively that sub-nationals have received a lot of support from the federal government in order to stimulate the economy and make life better for our people. That is why as governors, we are doing our best to change the narratives,” he added.

In the same vein, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Monday Anyebe commended youths for standing solidly behind the laudable policies of President Tinubu, saying Kogi will continue to leverage the opportunities for youth development.

Various youth organisations in the state passed a vote of confidence on President Tinubu and Governor Ododo.

Billy Osawaru, Other Rep Members Accused of Corruption, Risk Recall Over Support for Alleged Oil Sector Fraud

0

Some members of the House of Representatives led by Hon. Billy Osawaru have been threatened with recalls over their perceived support for the corruption regime in the country’s oil and gas sector.

The Save Nigeria Proactive Coalition (SNPC) which made this known in a press statement on Friday also accused Osawaru and others of receiving over $10 million as kickbacks to support the nation’s oil regulatory agencies.

This comes after the House of Representatives called for the investigation of the international oil companies (IOCs) in Nigeria for allegedly conspiring to frustrate the survival of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals.

The House had also demanded the sack of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) boss Farouk Ahmed with Mele Kyari of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) Limited coming under serious pressure.

In a statement co-signed by its National President and Secretary General Arome James Otairu And Bilikus Adamu, the Save Nigeria Proactive Coalition described Osawaru and his colleagues as “dishonourable members of the National Assembly who are masquerading as agents of the people, but their actions betray their true allegiance to corruption and mismanagement.”

The group, therefore, dared Osawaru’s other “faceless” lawmakers to publish their full identities and constituencies within the next 24 hours and see if their constituents would not recall them.

Additionally, the Coalition said it would not hesitate to mobilise Nigerians against Osawaru and his cohorts in Abuja, Lagos, and Kaduna to force them to resign after Kyari and Ahmed had been shown the way out.

“We are outraged and disappointed by the actions of some so-called 50 lawmakers who rallied support for Mele Kyari and Farouk Ahmed, despite their glaring failures and incompetence in managing the oil industry,” the statement said.

“These dishonourable members of the National Assembly are masquerading as agents of people, but their actions betray their true allegiance to corruption and mismanagement.

“Their attempt to shield Kyari and Farouq from accountability is a clear indication of their complicity in the massive failure, corruption, and mismanagement that has characterised the oil industry under their watch.

“It is unacceptable that they would prioritize the interests of these failed appointees over the welfare of Nigerians who are suffering from the consequences of their incompetence.

“We warn these lawmakers that their actions will not go unchallenged. Their constituents will not forget their betrayal, and they will be held accountable for their actions.

“We call on Nigerians to begin the process of recalling these lawmakers who have clearly demonstrated that they are not representing the interests of their constituents.

“Their threat to the investigative committee to be impartial is a clear indication of their desperation to cover up the truth.

“We demand that the committee ignores their threats and continues to uncover the truth behind the failures in the oil industry. Nigerians deserve to know the truth, and those responsible must be held accountable.

“Furthermore, we challenge these lawmakers to disclose the source of the $10 million received to run their scheme, with only 12 lawmakers invited by Hon. Billy Osawaru, who is notorious for raising nebulous groups within the new members’ caucus to attract favour from the House leadership. This is a clear case of corruption and abuse of office.

“We demand that Kyari and Farouq resign and go home, or face the wrath of Nigerians who will not hesitate to call for their removal. Their continued presence in office is an insult to the intelligence and patience of Nigerians.

“We also call on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the crisis in the oil industry. The removal of Kyari and Farouq is a necessary step towards restoring sanity and accountability in the industry.

“Furthermore, we demand that these dishonourable lawmakers publish their full identities and constituencies within the next 24 hours. We dare them to make this information public and see if Nigerians will not recall them within 21 days.

“Their constituents have the right to know their true representatives and hold them accountable. We are confident that once their identities are revealed, Nigerians will take swift action to recall them.

“Finally, we warn these lawmakers that their actions will have consequences. They will be forced to face the wrath of Nigerians who will not tolerate their antics forever.

“We will organise mass protests and rallies to demand their resignation and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions. We will not rest until they are removed from office and replaced with true representatives of the people.”
