6 Years After, Ayodele Set To Return As NIA DG

0

By Yahaya Umar, Abuja

Following the resignation of the Director- General, DG, Nigeria Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the coast is now clear for the return of suspended NIA DG, Ambassador Ayodele Oke to his seat.

AljazirahNigeria reports that Ayodele was suspended in April 2017 by then President Muhammadu Buhari, pending the outcome of investigation over large sums of money in foreign currencies allegedly found at a private residence.

The funds was said to be for security operations.

However, in 2023 a court cleared Oke from any wrongdoing  and ordered  that he be reinstated  back to his seat as DG NIA being a statutory tenure appointment.

Before his departure on May 29 Buhari also cleared Oke, of the allegations of corruption levelled against him.

Buhari’s clean bill of health to Oke  according to sources came after the NIA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, settled a misunderstanding between them and resolved to work in the interest of national security.

It would be recalled that the EFCC busted an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, and seized $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 kept in bags.

Following the president’s directive, the NIA wrote to the EFCC leadership soliciting the closure of the case because of its negative impact on the intelligence agency.

In this vein, on June 9, 2023 the suit was struck out following an application to withdraw the charges against Oke and his wife from the prosecution.

Meanwhile, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, has given an insight into why he resigned from his position.

Briefing journalists at the State House, Abuja after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the weekend, cited personal and family issues as his reasons for resigning from office.

“There are quite number of reasons one will do that. Some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue”, he said after tendering his resignation letter to the President.

“I discussed with Mr. President, he understood very well, and I promised to remain steadfast with issues and the security situations of the country”, he stated.

The former NIA DG also expressed gratitude to Tinubu for allowing him to serve for the first 15 months of the new administration, having occupied the office since 2018.

“After the briefing, I tendered my resignation and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted the resignation.

“I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for an extended period of 15 months, which is very rare”, he said.

Abubakar, a 71-year-old retired career foreign service officer from Katsina State, was appointed DG of the NIA in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who extended his stay in office in December 2021.

He attended Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in French. He also speaks English and Arabic.

He joined the security department of the Nigerian Foreign Service in 1993. In 2015, he was appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President, SSAP, on International Relations and Foreign Affairs.

Dr Ayuk stated that the ministry was, on Monday, August 19, notified of a presumptive diagnosis for Mpox or Chickenpox by the State Epidemiologist of Ebonyi.

“A sample was then sent to the national reference laboratory from there. The result returned on Saturday, August 24, positive for Mpox and negative for Chickenpox.

“The case, a female from Okoshe village in Obudu Local Government Area. She was at the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki to access care,” he added.

The commissioner said investigation about her travel history is ongoing, to ascertain what took her primarily to Ebonyi, as there is no medical history or referral from Obudu.

“While investigation is ongoing, the state government is responding actively to mitigate any outbreak in Obudu,” he assured.

Ayuk said he has directed the Mpox Emergency Operation Center to be activated immediately, with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Ekpo Ekpo as the Incident Manager.

He also directed that mitigation activities by Obudu Local Government response team with support from the state team should commence immediately.

Rivers Crisis: APP Woos Fubara

0

Action Peoples Party, APP, has called on the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to seek re-election on its platform in 2027, even as it said the governor neither owns the party nor is a member.

State Chairman of the party, Sunny Wokekoro, stated this when the immediate past leadership of the party led by Kenneth Atata paid him a solidarity visit at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Saturday.

Wokekoro said the party would make a statement with the October 5 local government election, saying it is determined to change the narrative in the state.

While noting that he is a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he, however, said the PDP is no longer a viable option for any politician who means well for the state or the country, pointing out that the country’s main opposition party has lost its relevance.

Wokekoro said, “I was a founding member of the PDP. I started by being a G-34 coordinator in Port Harcourt. I was a foundation member of that party. With the recent events in the country regarding the party’s administration, PDP is not supposed to house or to still retain any person who has morals. Any person who has integrity should have left that party by now.

“There is one impression I must have to correct in this gathering; the impression that Governor Fubara is a member of this party or that he owns it. This party has been in existence since 2017. It predates any of us who just joined it.”

The state chairman stressed that “no one can claim to be the owner of this party. The truth remains that as I speak to you today, Fubara is not a member of our party. However, a good party administrator goes out there looking for the best materials to field for elective positions. We are going to do that, not just me, but all of us are going to do that. We are going to persuade our governor to, if possible during his re-election, APP should be his platform.”

Wokekoro added that not only Fubara is enjoined to join the APP, but other well-meaning members of the State and National Houses of Assembly.

He urged party faithful to remain committed to propel APP to greater heights in the state and across the country.

In his remark, the APP National Chairman, Uchenna Nnadi, lauded Wokekoro for his role in bringing the party to the limelight in the state, noting that, “I want to commend the new leadership of Action Peoples Party in Rivers State led by Wokekoro. Within a short while, you have made us proud, and within a short while, our party is being recognised nationally.”

Our correspondent reports that speculations were rife that Fubara may defect to APP, following the alleged hijack of the PDP by his predecessor and estranged political godfather, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The speculation increased when a section of the secretariat of the APP along GRA axis of Port Harcourt was bombed, shattering doors, windows, and other property on Monday, August 12, 2023.

However, Fubara, while hosting PDP’s Board of Trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara, at the Government House, Port Harcourt debunked the speculated defection and pledged his membership to the PDP.

Petroleum Scarcity: Nigerians Are Dying, NNPP Chieftain Tells FG

0

From Damola Adeloye, Ibadan

Chieftain of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Ambassador Olufemi Oguntoyinbo yesterday called on the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, address the current hardship occasioned by the non-availability of petroleum products across the country.

Oguntoyinbo, in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, said what President Bola Tinubu promised Nigerians when he resumed office last year was that with the removal of subsidy, there won’t be scarcity of fuel, but Nigerians have seen that the president failed to keep to his promise.

He said the situation has become terrible because there is poor electricity supply, with the whole country in darkness. While Nigerians are used to powering their generating sets with diesel and Petroleum Motor Spirit, the products are unavailable.

The NNPP chieftain said when Nigerians were complaining about poor power supply nine years ago, during the early days of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu begged Nigerians that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was just assuming office and that incessant electricity shortage would become a thing of the past.

According to him, “however, nine years after, with Tinubu as president, electricity supply is still low or non-available in many parts of the country. To make it worse, people cannot find petroleum products to buy, even when they are ready to cough out their hard earned money to do so.

“What this means is that the APC that has been blaming the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, for the woes of the country, has also failed Nigerians after nine years in power.

“President Tinubu must, as the Minister of Petroleum, find solutions to the current non-availability of fuel in the country. It is sad that we are witnessing the scarcity of fuel now that Nigerians are celebrating little reduction in the price of foodstuffs.

“The little gain we recorded will evaporate soon due to the high cost of transportation as a result of non-availability of petroleum products.

“The president needs to investigate the activities of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, and if possible, sanction whoever caused this current scarcity.

“It is sad that despite the fact that many people are ready to buy at a high rate, fuel is not even available and it has been affecting many things including the transportation of foodstuffs from rural to urban areas.

“We cannot continue like this as a country. The president needs to summon courage and find lasting solutions to the perennial fuel scarcity in parts of the country”.

He also called on former presidents and other statesmen to come out and find solutions to the current problem as, according to him, the fuel scarcity affects almost every home in the country.

“What is currently happening should be looked at beyond politics. Former presidents and other statesmen should come out and proffer solutions”, he said.

APC Chieftain Tasks  Tinubu On Incessant Fuel Scarcity

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hon Olatunbosun Oyintiloye in Osun State has appealed to President Bola Tinubu, to intervene and end the reoccurring fuel scarcity in the country.

Oyintiloye said that the President’s interventions is needed due to the suffering Nigerians are facing for about a month  due to fuel scarcity.

The APC chieftain while speaking with newsmen yesterday in Osogbo, said that Nigerians had hoped scarcity of fuel had ended after subsidy on the product was removed by the Federal Government.

Oyintiloye, however, said that rather than the situation to improve, fuel situation had become worse off, with Nigerians passing through untold hardship to get the product at a very high price.

He appealed to the President to beam a searchlight on the activities of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, in order to unravel the root cause of the persistent fuel scarcity.

Oyintiloye, a member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council, said while Nigerians were struggling to survive the ongoing economic hardship, inadequate fuel supply should not be added to already tensed situation.

“In recent months, Nigerians have been having it tough getting petroleum products at filling stations across the country.

“I want to appeal to the President to come to the rescue of Nigerians who are passing through untold hardship due to fuel scarcity.

“Fuel scarcity is now becoming a normal routine of daily lives in Nigeria and which suppose not to be.

“For the past few weeks now, Nigerians have been sleeping in filing stations across the country in a bid to get fuel for their businesses and vehicles.

“While many  of the filing stations do not have the product, those who have it are selling at very exorbitant prices

“Nigerians are passing through a lot and that is why the President will have to intervene and put an end to the severe hardship people are passing through”, he said.

Infrastructural Development: Only Gov Adeleke’s Administration  Remembers Us In Ile-Ife, Says Adeyeye

0

From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

Lowa Adimula of Ile-Ife Kingdom in Osun State, High Chief Abraham Adekola Adeyeye yesterday commended Governor Ademola Adeleke of the state for the construction of bridge and dualisation of roads in the ancient community.

The Lowa Adimula while answering questions from our Correspondent in his palace said, Governor Adeleke is a man of his words who has made their dreams comes true with the ongoing numbers of development going on in Ife Kingdom.

According to the traditional ruler, on behalf of the people of Ile-Ife both home and abroad, “I am using this medium to appreciate our amiable and friendly Governor, Ademola Adeleke of Osun State for turning our long awaited hope to complete joy and happiness for remembering Ile-Ife for this kind of development which we have been expecting for long.

“I want to say boldly that since Independence of this Country in 1960, no Nigeria President or Governor of this state since inception in 1991 think or remembered Ile-Ife for such a development, how can Ile-Ife the source of mankind be at this stage, it is a shame to all Yoruba and Nigeria as a whole, but God used Governor Adeleke’s administration to remember us as the first and only Osun State Governor to break the jinx, he has laid the foundation of history while his name will be written on the marble and the entire Ife people will continue to remember him for the ongoing developmental projects in the ancient city.

“I am not surprised with the performance of Governor Adeleke since he assumed the office as the Yoruba adage says “Charity begins at home” if you see someone doing good in the society, go and look at the person’s background either mother or father, but this our people’s governor inherited his good and commendable performance from his late father, Senator Ayoola Adeleke as Baba was friendly, generous and God fearing while on earth.

“During the campaign promises when he visited Ile-Ife then, he promised to turn the entire Osun State to London, he has been working assiduously towards that and here in Ile-Ife we have seen the impact with the ongoing numbers of people oriented programmes, and am happy to say that rehabilitation of about four to five roads are also ongoing in the ancient city aside of the dualisation of roads and construction of the gigantic bridge.

“This is not a matter of politics, “Ti Omo eni ba dara o ye ki awi” this why I am appreciating Governor Adeleke for his good work and performance in Ile-Ife” Lowa Adimula emphasised.

High Chief Adeyeye further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the country to extend the dividends of democracy to Ile-Ife as a matter of urgency.

Keep Pushing For Kanu’s Release, Ohanaeze Tasks S’East Governors’

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has tasked the five South-East governors to keep pushing for the release of the incarcerated leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying his release would douse the escalating insecurity in the region.

In a statement, yesterday, by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze said there was an urgent need for the South-East governors to reassess their strategies in addressing the challenges confronting the region to checkmate some ‘unwarranted’ comments from Finland-based Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa.

The statement reads in part, “Their insufficient responses to pressing security challenges have allowed ‘inconsequential’ figures, such as Simon Ekpa, to exploit their weakened stance, issuing baseless threats to disrupt economic activities and peace within the region by declaring an illegitimate lockdown from August 28 to September 26, 2024.

“It is disheartening to witness a once-respected region, known for its notable leaders, such as the revered Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr. Michael Okpara, Dr. Francis Akanu-Ibiam, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Dim Odumegwu Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, and Chief Sam Mbakwe, become a source of mockery and ridicule due to the reckless antics of individuals like Simon Ekpa, who conducts his dubious activities from abroad, all the while diminishing our collective dignity.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls for an urgent reassessment of the South-East governors’ strategies for addressing these challenges. It is imperative for them to focus on developing solutions rooted in Indigenous methods, leveraging the unique cultural dynamics of the Igbo people rather than relying solely on ineffective conventional approaches.

“We implore our governors to take decisive action towards engaging the Federal Government in the urgent matter of Nnamdi Kanu’s situation.

“Their recent meeting with notable discussions involving former President Olusegun Obasanjo should have paved the way for a collective visit to President Bola Tinubu to advocate for Kanu’s release. Alas, weeks have passed without a follow-up, complicating our plight and encouraging those who propagate violence”.

The Secretary-General said, Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains steadfast in finding genuine pathways to resolve the spiraling insecurity in the South East.

Edo Guber: Okpebholo Promises To Revive Bendel Brewery, 35% Quota For Women

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has appealed to the people of Evbareke and Uwelu Spare Parts market in Egor Local Government Area to vote the APC in the September 21 governorship election.

Okpebholo stated this at Evbareke and Uwelu Spare Parts market during the party’s ward to ward campaign in Egor Local Government Area.

The governorship candidate said he will ensure that the road leading to the market is tarred to make it accessible.

According to him, “I will make sure I tar this road immediately I assume office as the governor of Edo State. I know fully well that the spare parts market contributes to the economy of the state greatly”.

He promised to provide the dividends of democracy to Edo State if given the mandate.

Also in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Okpebholo  promised to revive Bendel Brewery and ensure that youths are fully employed.

“We will employ 500 teachers within 100 days in office, as well as provide pipe borne water. There will be mechanised farming, as women will be given soft loans and 35 percent quota will be allocated to them in my cabinet.”

On his part, Director-General of the APC Campaign, Matthew Urhokhide appealed to the people to vote APC on election day.

Urhokhide said both Edo North and Central have agreed with the Esan agenda, hence their choice of Senator Okpebholo as their party’s candidate. He said he believes that Okpebholo, as a good candidate, will listen to the yearnings of the people.

Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole  called on members of the APC and its supporters to be vigilant and brace up for emerging threats against the peaceful and credible conduct of the gubernatorial election billed for September 21.

Oshiomhole, who alleged that there are  attempts by a certain woman caught with packs of Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, in Ovia Federal Constituency and voters suppression linked to the ongoing PVC collection in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The former governor, who raised the alarm at the APC governorship rally, asked Governor Godwin Obaseki and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Asue Ighodalo to bury the act, stating that thought of rigging cannot happen.

He said, “Don’t dance too much and allow them to compromise the electoral process by stealing PVCs and deny you the opportunity to vote. We will defend those rights. We will do so peacefully in a civilised manner.

“Now, what is at stake in this election is much more than you can easily understand”, Senator Oshiomhole stated.

He also disclosed that an APC-led government will make Edo Specialist Hospital accessible to all residents, if Senator Okpebholo wins the governorship poll.

The multi-billion naira 120-bed capacity which was built during his second tenure and inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari, was privatised by the Obaseki-led government, which also demolished Central Hospital Complex beside the health facility and allocated the land for the proposed Museum for West Africa Arts, MOWAA, project.

Oshiomhole stated that the next government will carry out a comprehensive audit on the privatisation of the the hospital, as well as ensure that those behind the alleged fraudulent deal that made healthcare accessible only to the rich are prosecuted.

He accused Governor Obaseki of deploying consultants without knowledge of hospital management to operate the specialist hospital solely for purpose of revenue generation.

A chieftain of the party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who led members of the party and supporters in a brief moment of worship, lamented the failed promises of PDP and assured that Senator Okpebholo will deliver on his promises.
