Coach Samson Siasia says that he is more renewed and prepared to continue with his lifetime passion of coaching, following his return to full scale football activities.

It will be recalled that Siasia, a renowned former Super Eagles player and coach, completed a ban imposed by FIFA for a match-fixing allegation.

Initially a lifetime penalty, it  was reduced to five years by the Court of Arbitration for Sports ,CAS, in 2019.

Siasia spoke on the sidelines of an event organised by friends and parents of Siaone Soccer Academy to mark his return to full football activities on Saturday in Abuja.

He admitted that it had been five difficult years of momentary pain and emotional anguish for him.

Siasia said that the ban came as a shock to him and was very devastating, adding that it was over an offence he never committed.

He said  that he was charged, investigated, tried and sentenced without his knowledge.

“I was never informed that I was under investigation over any allegation against me.

“I did not have the chance to defend myself for one second before I was banned.

“I was prevented from fully practicing my only profession, the game of football.

“But I thank God that the night is over, the day is here at last and I am free again to practice my profession with my usual honesty and sincerity of character.

“In my over 25 years of coaching career, I have jealously guarded and maintained my principles and character with utmost uncompromising sincerity”.

Nigeria’s GDP Grows By 3.19% In Q2, 2024 – NBS

As WTO rates Nigeria’s average GDP growth rate since 2014

By Charles Ebi

In the second quarter of 2024, Nigeria grew its Gross Domestic Product ,GDP, by 3.19% on a year-on-year basis in real terms from the 2.51% posted in the same period of last year, and higher than the 2.98% achieved in the first quarter of this year.

This information was revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics ,NBS, in its Nigerian GDP Report Q2 2024 on Monday.

The GDP growth rate surpasses the 2.51% recorded in the second quarter of 2023 and the 2.98% growth seen in the first quarter of 2024.

The GDP performance in Q2 2024 was primarily driven by the Services sector, which grew by 3.79% and contributed 58.76% to the total GDP. The agriculture sector saw a growth of 1.41%, slightly down from the 1.50% growth recorded in Q2 2023.

The industry sector improved significantly, with a growth of 3.53%, compared to the -1.94% decline observed in the second quarter of 2023.

In terms of GDP share, the industry and services sectors contributed more to the total GDP in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

The oil sector contributed 5.70% to the total real GDP in Q2 2024, an increase from the 5.34% recorded in the same period of 2023, but a decrease from the 6.38% contribution in the preceding quarter.

The oil sector experienced a real growth of 10.15% year-on-year in Q2 2024, marking a significant increase of 23.58 percentage points compared to the -13.43% recorded in the same quarter of 2023.

This growth also represents a 4.45 percentage point rise from the 5.70% recorded in Q1 2024.

However, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, the oil sector saw a decline, with a growth rate of -10.51% in Q2 2024.

Nigeria recorded an average daily oil production of 1.41 million barrels per day (mbpd), in Q2, 2024 which is 0.19 mbpd higher than the average 1.22 mbpd recorded in the same quarter of 2023.

However, this figure is 0.16 mbpd lower than the 1.57 mbpd produced in the first quarter of 2024.

The non-oil sector contributed 94.30% in real terms to the nation’s GDP in the second quarter of 2024.

This is slightly lower than the 94.66% share recorded in the second quarter of 2023 but higher than the 93.62% contribution in the first quarter of 2024.

The non-oil sector grew by 2.80% in real terms during Q2 2024.

This growth rate was 0.78 percentage points lower than the 3.58% recorded in the same quarter of 2023, and it matched the 2.80% growth seen in the first quarter of 2024.

The sector’s performance in Q2 2024 was primarily driven by Financial and Insurance (Financial Institutions), Information and Communication (Telecommunications), Agriculture (Crop Production), Trade, and Manufacturing (Food, Beverage, and Tobacco), all of which contributed to positive GDP growth.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the World Trade Organization ,WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has observed that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product ,GDP, growth rate on average has been steadily declining since 2014, signalling a downturn in the economic well-being of the average Nigerian.

Okonjo-Iweala, speaking at the annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association ,NBA, on Sunday, noted that the country’s economic fortunes experienced a reversal following the decade between 2000 and 2014, during which the average GDP growth rate was approximately 3.8%.

According to the Director-General of the WTO, this consistent GDP growth outpaced the nation’s population growth, which was only around 2.6% annually.

However, she pointed out that since 2014, the situation has reversed, with GDP showing a negative growth rate of 0.9%, as the government has been unable to sustain the positive growth achieved by previous administrations.

“Many of the big problems the NBA is grappling with today has its root in Nigeria’s failure to sustain rate of economic growth and development that consistently outpaced the growth of our population.

“We have had episodes of reforms and faster economic growth that was not merely a function of the price of oil. But we have been unable to consolidate and build on them and millions of our compatriots have paid the price in terms of diminished job prospects and human well-being.

“For example, in the decade between 2000 and 2014, we have an average GDP growth rate of 3.8% well above our population growth rate of 2.6% per annum, meaning that people were on average truly improving their standard of living.

“During the following decade, average annual GDP per capita has been negative around minus 0.9% meaning people were worse off because we were not able to sustain prior positive growth momentum,” Okonjo-Iweala added.

Speaking further, Okonjo-Iweala said the country needs to sustain good economic policies irrespective of the administration or political party in power in order to foster development in the country.

The former Finance Minister said policy inconsistencies have accounted for the reversal in the fortune of the nation’s economic development.

Furthermore, she advocated for a social contract between the government and the people which will go beyond the political party in power.

According to her, this social contract must be generally accepted on what economic policies should be followed regardless of who is in power.

“Maintaining good economic and social policies; maintaining policy consistency and adding more reforms on top of that will lead us along the path of good progress that we all desire”, she added.

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product ,GDP, growth declined to 2.98%, lower than the rate recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023 which was 3.46%, according to a report from the National Bureau of Statistics ,NBS.

However, the GDP growth rate in the quarter is higher than the figure recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2023 which was 2.31%.

In the past decades, Nigeria’s economic growth has been moderate as a result of low exports, a reduction in the sales of oil which accounts for about 90% of our revenue as well as other economic challenges in the country.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has continuously said he would increase Nigeria’s GDP to a $1 trillion economy, but many analysts believe such a goal may not the feasible amid growing concerns of high inflation, low employment rate as well and rising national debt.

2027: Why Opposition Cannot Unseat Tinubu – Lukman

By Teddy Nwanunobi

Ahead of the 2027 general election, a former member of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Salihu Lukman, has hinted on why the opposition will not be able to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Lukman, who was the former APC National Vice Chairman (North West), in a statement, Monday, in Abuja, noted that all the leading opposition political parties are embroiled in some ooembarrassing internal crisis, which has pitched leaders of the parties against each other.

“It is quite appalling, for instance, that leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are antagonistic to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi is in the midst of a helpless survival leadership battle in Labour Party, LP, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is over-sighting a directionless New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, whose roof is being torn apart by no other than its own so-called leaders.”

“All the other parties, including SDP and PRP have adopted a monarchic behaviour, sitting in their comfort zones waiting for disgruntled and aggrieved opposition political leaders to come to them for some ‘royal’ cover,” he said.

The former director-general of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, PGF, also identified the selfish tendencies of opposition leaders and their greed for power as another factor.

“Part of the reality is that opposition political leaders in the country are stuck to old political ambitions and, to that extent, only strategising to manipulate their emergence as candidates for election in 2027. This has become the singular determining factor for political consultations in the country.

“Consequently, there is almost zero trust among opposition political leaders, which has become a thick barrier to political consultations in the country. Despite the dangerous situation in the country whereby Nigerians are not only hungry resulting in malnutrition among millions of children, but also many Nigerians are daily dying on account of hunger and curable diseases, opposition political leaders continue to live in their comfort zones unable to open lines of consultations, which expectedly should produce the roadmap for political mobilisation towards 2027,” he added.

In real terms, the non-oil sector contributed 94.30 per cent to the nation’s GDP in the second quarter of 2024, lower than the share recorded in the second quarter of 2023 which was 94.66 per cent and higher than the first quarter of 2024 recorded as 93.62 per cent.

Agricultural firm, Davidorlah Nigeria Limited has pledged readiness to empower over 50,000 young Nigerians on pineapple farming across the country.

The group urged the federal government to ensure an enabling environment in order to address food insecurity.

Responding to questions about secondary school curriculum were agricultural studies is optional for students, Alabi lamented that the development might affect students view on farming.

Abia: Rep Alerts Public Of Planned Protest Against Him

Stories by Paul Effiong, Abuja

Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Obinna Aguocha has alerted the public to a planned protest against his personality.

A statement signed by his media team which was made available to journalists Monday in Abuja alleged that a group, Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders is being used by some political opponents to question his contributions to his constituents.

The statement titled: “Peaceful Protest and Clarification of Concerns,” blamed the planned protest on his political enemies who lost out in the last general elections.

The statement reads in part: “It has come to my attention that a little known and hastily put together group, Niger Delta Youth Peace Builders is being sponsored by certain individuals I defeated in the last general election and are vowing to declare the Abia State governorship seat vacant in 2027, whilst being in cahoot with an aspirant in the Abia Local Government election to conduct a protest and cast aspersions against Aguocha in Abuja on September 4.

“The said Niger Delta group is being sponsored, all expenses paid, to fly in and host paid agents in posh hotels within Abuja to protest under the guise of lack of constituency projects, accountable representation and the management of rice palliatives in our constituency”.

The lawmaker wondered why the group is concerned about the affairs of his people and constituency.

“The lawmaker fully respects and recognizes their right to peaceful assembly and expression as enshrined in Section 40 of the 1999 constitution as amended. These rights are fundamental to our democracy. We encourage them to carry out their activities peacefully and in compliance with extant laws.

“Aguocha values the safety and well-being of all his constituents, regardless of their political persuasion and urge them to ensure that their protest remains peaceful”, the statement added.

However, on the issue of constituency projects, he said he has worked hard to secure viable infrastructural projects and human capital development opportunities in the 2024 budget for the benefit of his constituents.

According to him, “these projects will be executed when funds are released by the federal government to contractors for their implementation.

“However, it is significant to note that projects in the Appropriation Act do undergo rigorous due process, including their award to eligible contractors who bided for them.

“It is also significant to understand that no funding at any level is released to the account of any lawmaker.

“We are committed to maintaining transparency and accountability. We will continue to provide regular updates to our constituents”, he assured.

On Independence Day, Ukraine Says It Will Regain ‘Territorial Integrity’

0

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin held talks with top army generals at an undisclosed command centre on Saturday to discuss strategies to counter Ukrainian troops in its Kursk region.

No details were released about what was said, but the Kremlin said he has also been given telephonic updates from commanders on the ground.

Ukraine launched the surprise cross-border counterattack on August 6, later saying it aimed to create a buffer zone to prevent further Russian attacks on its territory.

Russia’s Defence Ministry also released footage of what it says a Ka-52 helicopter attacking Ukrainian positions in Kursk, without providing any further details.

The news came as Ukraine marked its 33-years of post-Soviet independence.

Kyiv set aside the usual fireworks and parades to instead commemorate the thousands of civilians and soldiers who have died in the ongoing war.

Social media was flooded with messages of gratitude and support as Ukrainians greeted each other from around the country and thanked soldiers who are on the frontlines.

The United Nations says at least 11,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the conflict, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February said some 35,000 soldiers had died.

In a speech marking Independence Day, Zelenskyy stressed his country’s resolve to regain its “territorial integrity”.

“We will do everything to force Putin to end this war diplomatically, so that there will be less loss of people in front of everything and time,” he said.

“But if we do not succeed, if our partners crumble and do not stand firmly against Putin’s aggression and against him as a thief, then we will do everything so that our army is ready to justly push Putin out of the territory of our state.”

He comments came during a news conference held with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, in which the Kursk operation was discussed.

Ukraine declared independence from the former Soviet Union on 24 August 1991. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country on 24 February 2022.

However, even as Ukraine presses ahead with its offensive into Russia, it is evacuating residents from Pokrovsk, with Russian forces just 10 kilometres  outside the strategic eastern city.
