The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has extended subsidies on transportation for another six months as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day anniversary on October 1.

In an address by the governor on Tuesday, he said the move was the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) scheme.

He said, “The subsidy will now also include subsidy on trucks for produce evacuation. This subsidy will be implemented through the various trader and agriculture unions.”

Speaking further, Makinde said now is not the time to emphasise what divides the people, rather, he urged indigenes of the state to hold fast to the things that unite them.

“Our shared identity, our culture, and our history. We must always remember who our real enemies are, so we do not turn against our friends.

“We will as a government continue to give strength to democratic institutions because we believe this is one of the best ways to build stronger states and nations.

“I also want to take this opportunity to reassure you that the security of our people remains a top priority. During your celebrations, you may notice an increased security presence. Do not be alarmed—they are there to ensure your safety and guarantee a peaceful celebration.

“So, as we celebrate Nigeria at 64, let us not dwell on the difficulties of the present. Instead, let us use this period to reflect on what we can do different, so that the future of our nation will be better than the past. “

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making decisions that will serve the best interests of the good people of Oyo State.

He said, “This is why I have directed that guarantors for small-scale loans to agripreneurs through the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State will no longer be limited to civil servants but will now include Community Development Associations (CDAs), farmers’ associations and artisans’ associations.”

“Considering this, I am pleased to announce the gathering of a National Youth Conference. This conference will be a platform to address the diverse challenges and opportunities confronting our young people, who constitute more than 60 per cent of our population.

“It will provoke meaningful dialogue and empower our young people to participate actively in nation-building. By ensuring that their voices are heard in shaping the policies that impact their lives, we are creating a pathway for a brighter tomorrow.

“The 30-day Confab will unite young people nationwide to collaboratively develop solutions to issues such as education, employment, innovation, security, and social justice.

“The modalities of this Confab and selection of delegates will be designed in close consultation with our young people through their representatives. Through this confab, it will be our job as leaders to ensure that their aspirations are at the heart of the conference’s deliberations.

“The government will thoroughly consider and implement the recommendations and outcomes from this forum as we remain resolute in our mission to build a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria.”

Tinubu further said his administration decided to reform Nigeria’s political economy and defence architecture for the nation to survive.

The President also saluted the doggedness of the Nigerian people, saying the country has survived crises that disintegrated other nations.

Tinubu said his administration is determined to win the war against bandits and terrorists so that displaced farmers can return to their farmlands and boost production to reduce soaring food prices.

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from releasing the voters register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, for the conduct of local government election scheduled to hold on October 5.

The court, in the judgement that was delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, equally barred the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, and the Department of State Service, DSS, from providing security for the planned elections.

The orders followed a suit filed by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Justice Lifu held that RSIEC erred by fixing a date for the conduct of polls in the 23 local government areas without strict compliance with relevant laws guiding such election.

He faulted the electoral body for not publishing the 90 days’ mandatory notice, before it scheduled the election.

More so, the court held that the update and revision of voters register to be used for the election ought to have been concluded before any valid date could be fixed for the polls.

Consequently, it ordered INEC not to make the certified voters register available to RSIEC, pending when the relevant laws are complied with.

It barred RSIEC from accepting any voters register from INEC or using same for the purpose of the LG polls fixed for October 5.

By Paul Effiong

Drama ensued yesterday as the House of Representatives Joint Committee on the investigation of disturbing allegations of corruption against the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, and the Nigerian Correctional Services, NCS, grilled Marthins Vincent otherwise known as Very Darkman,VDM, and his lawyer.

A mild drama, however, occurred between the probe panel and VDM, as the former had vowed that he will never talk to the panel as issues raised against him should not be addressed in the absence of Idris  Okuneye also known as Bobrisky.

VDM’s action and body language almost provoked lawmakers who directed that he should either speak out  or stand the risk of being  arrested and detained by the Sergent at Arms officers.

He, however, pleaded that his lawyer, Deji Adeyajnu should be allowed to speak on his behalf but was outrightly rejected by the probe panel.

In another development, Bobrisky’s lawyer, Averosoghene Omuvwie pleaded with the panel to bear with him, as his client is  very sick and  that he should be allowed to speak on his behalf.

Consequently, Omuvwie argued with the panel that it was wrong to have denied him the opportunity to represent his client at the investigative hearing.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chairman of the Joint investigative Panel, Obinna Onwusibe had pledged his readiness to unravel all the circumstances surrounding the corruption allegation against the two government  agencies.

Other lawmakers who spoke during the probe explained that since Nigeria image was involved in the alleged corruption video, they will make sure those behind the allegation are thoroughly  investigated to know the whole truth.

According to the lawmakers, there has been widely circulated video in the social media which alleged that the sum of N15m was given to the Economic and Financial Crime Commision, EFCC to reduce charges against Bobrisky and N10m to the Nigerian Correctional Services, NCS, inoder for him to stay in a diffrent safer centre.

The chairman warned against additional materials outside the allegation on ground adding that such is outside the mandate of the probe panel.

In his reactions, Micheal Anokwa Bensom, the Officer in charge of Lagos Corectional Centre, informed the panel that the said inmate was admitted into the Minimum  Centre in Lagos on February 13.

He also informed the panel that the cross dresser spent only 10 days before he was transfered to the Maximum Centre still in Lagos state.

According to him, those who are in the Minimum Center are first time offenders and those with minor offences, while those transfered into maximum Centres are hardened criminals.

He explained, while answering questions from lawmakers, that the cross dresser is a man, even as he added that there were special features they found on him such as breast.

Reacting to questions on whether he was on suspension from his office, he said yes, adding that the suspension was on the press release.
