North Korea Leader Promises ‘unconditional support’ For Russia’s War in Ukraine

0
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to “unconditionally support” Russia in its war in Ukraine and said he expected Moscow to emerge victorious, Pyongyang’s state media reported Thursday.

North Korea has become one of Moscow’s main allies during its more than three-year Ukraine offensive, sending thousands of troops and container-loads of weapons to help the Kremlin oust Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk border region.

Meeting top Russian security official Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday, Kim said that Pyongyang would “unconditionally support the stand of Russia and its foreign policies in all the crucial international political issues including the Ukrainian issue”, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

Kim “expressed expectation and conviction that Russia would, as ever, surely win victory in the sacred cause of justice”, KCNA said.

The two sides agreed to “continue to dynamically expand” relations, the state news agency reported.

Russia and North Korea signed a sweeping military deal last year, including a mutual defence clause, during a rare visit by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the nuclear-armed North.

Shoigu hailed the deal as “fully meeting the interests of both countries” during a visit in March.

Around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded fighting for Russia, according to South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, citing the country’s intelligence service.

North Korea in April confirmed for the first time that it had deployed troops to Russia to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine — and admitted that its troops had been killed in combat.

South Korea has also accused the nuclear-armed North of sending significant volumes of weapons, including missiles, to help Russia’s war effort.

– Drone attack –
The meeting between Kim and Shoigu in Pyongyang came the same day the North’s arch-enemy South Korea swore in new president Lee Jae-myung.

In a speech upon taking office Wednesday, Lee vowed to reach out to the North — a marked departure from his hawkish predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, under whom relations plummeted to their worst level in years.

Lee said Seoul would “deter North Korean nuclear and military provocations while opening communication channels and pursuing dialogue and cooperation to build peace on the Korean Peninsula”.

KCNA reported on Lee’s inauguration in a two-line report on Thursday but did not respond to his overtures for talks.

But while Russia and the North are deepening ties, “prospects for restoring inter-Korean ties grow increasingly remote”, Lim Eul-chul, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, told AFP.

Shoigu’s visit, his second in three months, also came just days after Ukraine launched a major drone strike on Russia, which “underscores the urgency of high-level coordination on security matters”.

“From Pyongyang’s perspective, active participation in countering drone threats could serve as a stepping stone to enhance its capabilities in modern warfare — suggesting North Korea may take a more assertive role in military cooperation with Russia,” said Lim.

– ‘Deepening ties’ –
A multilateral sanctions monitoring group including South Korea, the United States, Japan and eight other countries last week condemned ties between Russia and North Korea as “unlawful”.

According to the group, Russian-flagged cargo vessels delivered as many as “nine million rounds of mixed artillery and multiple rocket launcher ammunition” from North Korea to Russia last year.

In return, “Russia is believed to have provided North Korea with air defence equipment and anti-aircraft missiles”, it said.

It also issued a commentary Thursday slamming French President Emmanuel Macron over “imprudent” comments on Pyongyang’s ties with Moscow, calling them “shocking claptrap”.

The commentary by analyst Choe Ju Hyun took aim at comments by the French leader during the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Macron suggested that the NATO defence alliance could become involved in Asia if China did not do more to press North Korea to stop sending forces to help Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“It is a mistake if Macron thinks that he can cloak NATO’s aggressive and wicked intention to put dirty military shoes on the Asia-Pacific region by taking issue with the DPRK-Russia cooperative relations,” the commentary said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Fear Grips Kano Residents Over Poisonous Air

0

*Ministry warns of respiratory diseases, others

*Plans environmental response measures in communities

From Idris Abdullahi, Kano

There is palpable panic among Kano residents as the state Government  warned of poisonous air pollution in most areas of the state capital.

The panic followed the state Ministry of Environment and Climate Change weekly environmental report which raises the alarm.

The report was released by the state Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change in the state, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim.

Hashim said: “It is the duty of us all to take care of the environment. Environmental stewardship is the responsibility of both the government and the public”.

Besides, he said “The government is also concerned about the rapid rate of environmental degradation taking place in the state, and the government is looking at the next steps”.

According to the report “the further loss of air quality may contribute spreading respiratory illnesses and other diseases associated with pollution”.

The report stated that the air quality assessment was conducted between May 26 and May 30 and revealed that there was pollution in specific places such as Gaida, Ja’en, Sabon Titi, and Sharada Market in parts of Kano Municipal and Kumbotso LGA. The report specified that the air in these neighborhoods is currently unsafe and that there may be a health risk to those residents.

However, the Ministry said it planned to implement environmental response measures in Gaida, Ja’en, Sabon Titi, and Sharada Market.

This medium confirmed the findings of the Kano State Government regarding poor air quality in several neighborhoods.

Residents of Ja’en and Gaida, two of the affected areas, have reported a noticeable increase in health issues, particularly persistent coughing and respiratory infections among both adults and children.

In Ja’en, Ibrahim Sulaiman shared his concern over the growing number of people falling ill.

“I’m not surprised”, he said.

“We live close to an industrial zone, and many of these companies release different chemical substances and emit strong odors, especially at night.

There was even a time our community leaders had to file a formal complaint against a company that processes engine oil”,he added.

“My neighbor has been coughing for nearly two weeks now. I hear him every night coughing from my house. Now even his family has caught it. We’re really worried”.

In Gaida, another area called out in the air quality report, Shamsu Tijjani, a resident of the area who recently recovered from tuberculosis laments the situation.

“Of course, we don’t have the scientific tools to measure air quality ourselves, but we agree with the details the government is putting out”, he explained.

“There are neighborhoods that are so dense; there is absolutely no urban planning.

“You can’t turn in any direction without seeing construction, open spaces meant for schools or playgrounds have been taken over and built upon, motorcycles have difficulty navigating these tight passages”.

Reflecting on his own experience of being sick, he said, “I think my own illness was related to the air quality and difficult living conditions”.

People living in all of the affected neighborhoods are expressing concern over the environmental and public health implications of unrestrained urbanisation and industrial emissions.

They are calling for immediate action by government agencies and environmental regulators to create a safer and cleaner environment for living.

As of June 3, 2025, the air quality in Kano is categorized as “Moderate” with an Air Quality Index, AQI, of 79. The primary pollutant contributing to this rating is fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, which is currently measured at 24.2 micrograms per cubic meter , µg/m³, according to IQAir.

…PM2.5 and Its Health Implications

PM2.5 is defined as particles in the air that are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller ,about 30 times smaller than human hair. Because they are so small, they can travel deep in the respiratory tract and reach the lungs or enter the bloodstream. Studies have associated exposure to high levels of PM2.5 with numerous adverse health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular disease.

Also Professor Isa Abubakar, a consultant physician at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, shed light on the serious health risks posed by prolonged exposure to polluted air.

“Air pollution can lead to asthma attacks and other forms of respiratory disease; over time you can even have lung cancer or neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s or other mental health issues”.

Giving advice to residents of polluted communities, Professor Abubakar suggested, “If possible, individuals should consider relocating or changing their place of work. If that’s not feasible, they should reduce the time spent outdoors or wear face masks to minimize exposure. This can provide some level of protection”.

He further emphasised that tackling the issue goes beyond personal precautions. “The government must step in to enforce environmental regulations that will prevent further pollution and safeguard public health”, he added.

Governor Okpebholo Takes Farming Crusades To Edo Central

Okpebholo

Edo State’s commitment to revolutionizing its agricultural sector and ensuring food security gained significant momentum today with a dual-pronged approach: the inspection of the ongoing Udomi Farm Project and a crucial sensitization programme for farmers under the Fadama Cares initiative.

These activities, spearheaded by the Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, are a direct reflection of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s “SHINE agenda” and his administration’s renewed hope for the state’s agricultural landscape.

The day commenced with a visit to the Udomi Adohe Axis, where the ambitious 200-hectare Udomi Farm Project is rapidly taking shape. A visible sign of the Governor’s strong support was the delivery of three brand-new tractors to the farm location to accelerate cultivation efforts.

Golden Ugbodu, the Special Advisor on Agriculture and Food Security, who led the inspection exercise provided an overview of the project, highlighting its focus on maize production.

According to him, “We are aiming for a substantial harvest,” , adding that planting is slated to begin in the coming weeks.

Golden noted that the Governor has pledged his full support to the farmers in the state, promising all necessary resources for their success, while emphasizing that farmer dedication remains a key prerequisite for ongoing assistance in agricultural production.

Following the farm inspection, attention shifted to the Esan Central Local Government Secretariat in Irrua, the venue for a vital sensitization programme for farmers under the Fadama Cares initiative.

Led by Honourable Ali Ibrahim, the Fadama Cares Project Coordinator, Edo State, the programme saw farmers from various local governments and villages being accredited and registered.

Ibrahim assured attendees that all interventions provided by Fadama Cares are entirely free of charge, designed specifically to empower low-income and COVID-19-affected farmers, with a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity. He added that soon, Fadama Cares will begin disbursing grant interventions, including essential agricultural inputs such as high-quality cassava sticks, fertilizers, and even machinery to accredited farmer groups. The project’s structure, built around Disbursement Linked Indicators ,DLIs, underscores a clear focus on efficient input provision, asset support, and the potential for irrigation, all geared towards group-based empowerment and sustainable agricultural practices.

According to him, “The overarching goal of these initiatives is to restore and sustain food security for low-income farmers, particularly those who bore the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through implemention of these grassroots interventions and fostering human capital development, the Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is directly aligning with Governor Okpebholo’s vision of prioritizing food security and providing robust support for the less privileged farmers across the state”

These activities serve as a strong evidence to Edo State’s proactive approach to transforming its agricultural sector into a cornerstone of its economic development and a source of hope for its farming communities.

Operating under the aegis of South East Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen, the former helmsmen declared their support during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on Tuesday at Umuahia, Abia State capital.

Recall that that the Deputy Speaker who represents Bende Federal Constituency of the State also served as the local government chairman of his Bende local government area 22 years ago.

Led by the former chairman of Umunneochi Local Government of Abia State, Dr. Frank Osita, the former chairmen said that are ready to mobilize support across the state for the President.

They also commended the Deputy Speaker for his achievements at the legislature and for setting up the Renewed Hope Partners ,RHP, meant to showcase the legacies of the President.

Speaking on their behalf, Osita said: “It is my great pleasure to present your former colleagues to you. We have come to identify with you. We have come under the umbrella of south east forum of former local government chairmen, a strategic platform designed to unite former grassroots leaders from the region. With you here is just the Abia State Chapter.

“Recognizing the crucial role we play as local government chairmen and continue to play in community mobilization in governance and development at grassroots level, this forum seeks to harness our collective experiences, influence and network for greater good of the region.

“At the heart of our mission is a renewed commitment to align the Southeast with the opportunities embedded in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We aim to do this through meaningful engagement and partnership with the Renewed Hope Partners, a platform championed by you, our leader, the Deputy Speaker.

“This forum serves not just as a rallying point but as a think tank to drive inclusive development, policy alignment and grassroot advocacy, ensuring that the region is not left behind in the national development conversation. We have come to be of use to you. We are from the grassroots, we have the structure and the idea you came up with to assist Mr. President is a very laudable one. We assure you that we will go to every nook and cranny of our various communities to assist in bringing our people and selling this idea that you’ve conceived for the interest of not just Abia State but Nigeria as a whole”.

In his remarks, the Deputy Speaker commended the chairmen of the Forum for their vision in setting up the forum and their support for President Tinubu.

He said that as former local government chairmen, they possess a great wealth of experience in public service, encouraging them take the forum seriously.

“Today, we have something Nigerians are going to emulate, the Forum of former Local Government Chairmen. If that’s not a great idea I wonder what is. Its greatness is found in the fact that we will understand each other better, having walked on same path.

“We will not be afraid to help each other, one for all, all for one. Twenty two years ago I was a local government chairman. You know me better. I was attending meetings with you.

“Some of us have served local government, states and then federal. So in terms of wealth of experience, we are older. Age and experience have something it brings and one of those things is the ability to remember that power is transient. So when you’re in charge, be careful. Treat people with mutual respect because you will meet them soon out there.

“I’m happy that you’ve agreed to come together under one umbrella. Your wealth of experience cannot be wasted.

“Experience begets knowledge. I came out from the grassroots. I’m a believer in grassroots and I’m returning to the grassroots. Who are the grassroots  without the chairmen? You control the grassroots.

“Take this forum seriously. We are going to do it for the whole of the South East to increase vote for Mr. President.

Mass Defection Hits Sokoto PDP As Party’s Business  Community Defects To APC

From Ibrahim Goronyo, Sokoto

A significant blow to the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, in Sokoto State has come as many prominent supporters of the party, led by Alhaji Chika Sarkin Gishiri, Chairman of the Sokoto State Traders Associations defected to the All Progressives Congress ,APC.

The defection took place yesterday at the residence of Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the APC leader in Sokoto State.

A statement made by Bashar Abubakar, the spokesman of the Association during  their reception said , ” We have the desire to move the state forward as the reason for our decision to join the APC”.

The defectors assured the APC leadership of their commitment to working towards the development of Sokoto State.

According to Sarkin Gishiri, this mass defection is a significant setback for the PDP in Sokoto, as influential members of the business community have now joined the ruling APC.

Sarkin Gishiri reaffirmed his unflinching support to the current administration of the people-friendly and prolific Gov Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for more tangible developmental strides to be massively recorded in the State.

He appreciated the continued support being received from Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko since time immemorial, which he attributed to the successes of his myriad of business activities.

He later declared his total and unalloyed support to APC in the state as well as all the other leaders of the traders in the State.

Earlier in his speech, the former Chairman of the State Traders Association and the current chairman of Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, told the Senator that all the leadership of Sokoto State Traders Associations have now agreed to join the crusade towards making the politically and economically more formidable.

He commended Sen. Wamakko for his sterling leadership qualities, especially when he was the State Governor, opining those noble virtues were what further reinforced their trust and confidence in the man of the people.

Almustapha extolled the retinue of projects executed by the Ahmad Aliyu-led administration in the state within just two years in office.

In his response, the APC leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, expressed gratitude and happiness for the welcome development even as he promised the defectors that they would be equally treated.

He said as leaders, there is no reason not to carry all the traders along, saying now that they have agreed to work together with the current administration in the state, the government will soon come to the immediate rescue of the entire Traders in the state by completing the ongoing renovation of the burnt Sokoto Central Market.

The former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator assured the traders that the state government is planning to provide huge support by giving them financial assistance to boost their businesses and bolster the socio-economic growth of the state.

Sen. Wamakko said that every trustworthy person in the state would testify that Sokoto is being transformed positively under the administration of the consummate Gov. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.

He further assured that the current lingering water issues in the state will decisively be addressed, even as he assured that there will be a spike in the capacity of the State Water Board, the supply of potable water as well as its quality.
