Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji

The Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has cautioned citizens of the state against fighting anyone over politics, saying scramble for positions shouldn’t be a reason for the citizens to perceive themselves as sworn enemies.

The Governor also said his administration has started providing alternative routes on state roads for motorists to ply to ease inter- state transportation.

He also said his government would actualise the cultivation of over 5,000 hectares of lands for farming in 2025 season to eliminate food scarcity and spiraling increase in the prices of food commodities in the state.

Oyebanji stated these  on Thursday, during a Citizens’ Engagement/Town Hall Meeting with stakeholders, held in Aramoko and Ilawe Ekiti for Ekiti Central and South Senatorial Districts respectively, in preparation of the 2025 budget of Ekiti State.

The well attended event was graced by critical stakeholders like traditional rulers, politicians, public servants, Local Government Chairmen, youth groups, market men and women, drivers, religious leaders, people living with disabilities, among others.

Harping on the imperative of  eschewing politics of bitterness, Oyebanji said: “Let me beg all of you as party people, don’t allow politics to divide us as Ekiti people.

“Don’t let us create enemies for ourselves. Ekiti is one, I believe this and we should all believe it. Let us wait for the right time. At the appropriate time, we will know exactly who is on ground”.

To resolve the bedlams associated with the deplorable  federal roads in the state, Oyebanji declared that state roads identified as  comfortable alternatives were being awarded for reconstruction, while those yet to be touched will be captured in the 2025 budgetary provisions.

Underscoring the significance of the consultation, Oyebanji stressed  the desire of his administration to be inclusive and participatory, so that the government can be strategic in the implementation of its  development plans as contained on the citizens’ priority lists.

In 2025, Oyebanji said his government will undertake aggressive works in agriculture, infrastructure, arts and culture, tourism, job creation, entertainment industry, security and payment of salary to workers to expand the scope of shared prosperity plans.

He said the fact that the demands made by communities last year were being accorded utmost attention by government signaled that the stakeholders’ meeting is not a mere jamboree, but a pragmatic approach to governance.

“I thank God that since I came on board, I stay connected with our people, which is part of what we are doing today. Though, we are in government, but we may not know all our problems, so this interaction is  necessary. When we wanted votes, we came to you. Nothing should stop us from coming to interact with  you”.

He said the state  government has not been able to reconstruct or undertake palliative work on some federal roads, because such money won’t be refunded. He however promised  to synergise with federal lawmakers to ensure that those roads  are captured in the 2025 budget.

“I am assuring you that the Ado-Ijan road had been captured in the 2024 budget, soon the contractor will be mobilised to site. But it remains that of Ado-Aramoko-Ita Ore road. All these will be done, but the federal government can only do one federal road this year.

“We are going to create alternative roads by making sure that some state roads that can serve as better alternatives are made motorable. If you are going to Ibadan or Akure, we have provided alternative roads. Let our people continue to use these roads until the situation improves”, Oyebanji said.

Highlighting the inclusion policy of his administration, Governor Oyebanji warned parents against locking any child suffering any form of disability at home. He urged them to surrender such wards to the government for proper care and monitoring in the special schools and special centres well equipped for that purpose.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Development, Mr. Oyeniyi Adebayo, in his presentation, revealed that the consultation,  is an integral part of budget preparation and leeway to interact with communities and groups to deepen  open governance policy that can benefit the grassroots and society.

At the event, all the representatives of the communities articulated and submitted their demands, while applauding Governor Oyebanji for the interactions and commended the government for implementation of the demands contained in the 2023 and 2024 budgets.

Essentially, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, represented by a scholar, Prof Michael Akindele and some traditional rulers, applauded the governor on the reconstruction of some strategic roads, reinforcing security and ensuring flood control measures in their domains.

A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party,  NNPP, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo has sharply reacted to the Wednesday’s increase in pump price of premium Motor Spirits ,PMS, popularly called Petrol at the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited , NNPCL, filling stations across the country.

Hence appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to call the NNPCL to order and immediately reverts to the old price in order not to aggravate the suffering of the masses.

He said even masses are still struggling to buy petrol at the old pump price, talk more of the new price regime introduced by the NNPCL, which will suffocates Nigerians who are already suffering from the harsh effect of the bad economy in the country.

It could be recalled that the  NNPCL has increased petrol price to N1,025 per litre at various outlets across the country from its old price of N865 on Wednesday.

The recent development comes after the NNPC decided to terminate its exclusive purchase agreement with Dangote Refinery.

It was reported that the NNPCL is ending its exclusive purchase agreement with Dangote Refinery, opening up the market for other marketers to buy petrol directly from the refinery.

This open of the market for other marketers to purchase directly from the refinery, allowing for a “willing buyer, willing seller” pricing model, which this adjustment aligns with the full deregulation practices currently in place for petroleum products in Nigeria.

However, Ambassador Ajadi in a statement yesterday cited the NNPCL action as very insensitive to Nigerians’ plights.

He said this adjustments of the price by the NNPCL will further aggravate the suffering Nigerians are currently undergoing.

Ambassador Ajadi, who was the governorship candidate of the NNPP in Ogun state in the 2023 elections believe the action of the NNPCL will suffocates Nigerians.

According to the statement, “To their utter surprise, Nigerians received the shock of their life when they discovered the adjustment of price of petroleum  products at.the various NNPC Ltd depot across the country.

“I urged the Federal government especially our President, who is also the Minster of petroleum, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to help instruct the NNPC to revert to the old price. As an economist, President Tinubu should realize and be conversant of the multiplier effects of continuous increase in the price of petrol.

“Nigerians are already suffering and adding to their sufferings at this time may not augur well for the country. Even before today, people have resulted into trekking long distances because of the high transport fares. Prices of foodstuffs have gone up beyond the reach of an average Nigerian. The new action by the NNPC will add more to the People’s suffering.

“I called on President Tinubu, elder statesmen and even the National Assembly to help do something on this insensitive action of the NNPC. We can’t continue to suffer in the midst of plenty. Don’t suffocates the poor, the more, we should let them live”.

Joel Ajayi

In a move to reposition the sorry state of the sports sector in the country, the House Committee on Sports is set to engage all stakeholders to advance the cause of sports to an enviable Pedestal

While speaking at the inaugural meeting of the newly constituted committee the chairman of the committee Kabiru Amadu revealed that the committee understands nothing to write about of Nigeria sports, thereby vowing to turn the hand of the clock for good for the sports sector.

According to him, there is no doubt that we have an onerous task ahead of us. Repositioning this Committee for optimum performance is a feat we must accomplish.

“It is apposite to note that, Sports is a veritable instrument of reducing crime and unemployment if optimally pursued. It generates big foreign exchange for Countries all over the World.

This and many other embedded issues surrounding and affecting sports in Nigeria will be addressed passionately and will all sincerity of purpose.”

Speaking on the sorry state of the sports facilities in the country, Chairman Amadu expressed: “The issue of decaying Sporting infrastructure across the country, especially the National Stadia should be urgently looked into and addressed through adequate budgetary allocation.

“The Committee is not only poised to ensure positive improvement in the sports sector timely but also put in place mechanisms to realize our goals.”

He thanked the speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Tajudeen Abass and the entire leadership of the House count him worthy to be appointed as the Chairman of the great Committee.

Integrate IReV Into Electoral Act, Yiaga Africa Tells NASS

0
Yiaga Africa

An election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, has called on the National Assembly to integrate IReV into the electoral Act to make electronic transmission of results mandatory.

Yiaga Africa also  called on INEC to review its collation processes because the just concluded Edo governorship election allegedly failed integrity test due to lack of transparency.

Mr Paul James, Election Programme Manager, Yiaga Africa made the call on Thursday in Benin during a post-election meeting with Civil Society Organisations,CSOs, and the Media.

James, however , said that accreditation, voting, counting and recording of results at the polling units substantially complied with procedures.

He alleged that the results collation process was compromised by the actions of some biased INEC officials in conivance with other actors.

“This manipulation severely undermines the overall integrity of the election as we earlier stated in our report and Yiaga Africa stand by that report.

” It is imperative to integrate the IReV and electronic transmission of results into the electoral legal framework to confer legality on polling units level results uploaded on the portal.

“To this end, the national assembly should expeditiously amend the electoral act to make electronic transmission of results mandatory”, he said.

Yiaga Africa, however, commended the resilience and patience of Edo voters who turned out in the face of logistical challenges and rainfall that caused late opening of polls.

According to James, drastic steps are now needed for fundamental electoral reforms to restore public confidence in the electoral process and urgent change of attitude of political actors towards politics.

Also speaking, the Political Advisor to UN and ECOWAS Peace Support Operations in Africa, Blessed Jattoh, urged INEC to leverage on technology to minimise human factors in results collation process.

According to him, moving forward, Nigeria should harness and leverage on technology as we find all over the world, to cut some of the excesses we find in our electoral system.

The Executive Director of Youth Empowerment Advocacy and Good Governance Initiative, Solomon Idiogbe, noted that an automated BVAS was needed to count votes and upload same immediately.

“That way, the result will be displayed real time. As people are clicking, the result will be automatically collating itself in the BVAS for people to see, instead of snapping a pdf version of the total result into the server”, Idiogbe added.
