Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerian leaders to judiciously use the country’s abundant resources to develop the nation.

Speaking at the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja’s 40th anniversary celebration yesterday, Obasanjo emphasised that Nigeria had all it needs to thrive.

Obasanjo echoed the sentiments of Methodist Prelate, Dr Oliver Aba’s message, emphasising the importance of appreciating God’s blessings.

“As God created other nations, endowing them with resources, He similarly blessed Nigeria with numerous resources for growth.

“Just as Egypt has the River Nile, Nigeria has the Rivers Niger and Benue, plus crude oil, fertile soil, and other natural resources.

“I firmly believe God didn’t create Nigeria to struggle. He has given us everything we need; it’s our duty to appreciate Him, especially since many countries lack what Nigeria has.

Obasanjo urged leaders, clergy, and citizens to pray for the country’s healing, acknowledging that Nigeria’s current situation isn’t God’s fault.

“We’ve squandered God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land”.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr Nyesom Wike, commended the Methodist Church Nigeria for its commitment to social justice, education, and humanitarian outreach.

In his goodwill message, Tinubu praised Methodist Church Nigeria for its pioneering role and impactful vision.

“I celebrate the 40th anniversary of Abuja Archdiocese, a testament to the church’s enduring spirit of faith, community, and service in Abuja and 183 years in Nigeria.

“The Methodist Church has significantly contributed to our nation’s development through social justice, education, and humanitarian efforts, transforming lives nationwide”.

Group Lauds Otuaro For Revitalising Amnesty Programme

0

A socio-economic and political advocacy group, the Niger Delta Civil Action Advocacy Group ,NDCAAG, has applauded  Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP. Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro, for his outstanding leadership and commitment to rejuvenating the PAP.

National President of the group Comrade Embale Jonathan, made the commendation in a statement in Abuja and made available to journalists.

Jonathan, noting that under Otuaro’s guidance the programme which was “kicking like a dying horse”, has been reinvigorated and placed on the path of socio-economic development, thus, achieving a peacefully progressive Niger Delta region.

According to him, the uncommon leadership qualities of the administrator, strategic foresight he brought to bear and the sincere dedication to addressing the genuine challenges facing the Niger Delta region have not gone unnoticed.

In this vein, Jonathan said, “the strategic regional engagements Otuaro has held since assumption of office, and the willingness to listen to the voices of the people have been instrumental in not only driving positive change and peace, but has also restored the confidence of the people on the government’s commitment to addressing the region’s socio-economic woes”.

“The peace campaign through dialogue with stakeholders, giving listening ear and addressing their concerns, the right atmosphere is being provided as an outlet to vent the bottled-up aggressions of the region created over time by the failure of past administrations to tactically tackle the basic challenges for which the programme was conceived”, the statement quoted the national president as saying.

The NDCAAG is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting good governance, transparency and accountability in the Niger Delta with objectives to address the socio-economic and environmental challenges facing the region through advocacy and community engagement.

Shame On Gov Dauda, PDP For Politicizing Zamfara Insecurity —Group

The Zamfara Concerned Citizens group has condemned the act of Gov Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, and the state’s Peoples Democratic Party PDP for politicizing the insecurity in the state.

According to the group, “The government can no longer hide its shame for its lack of contribution.”

The group contrasted this with the Sokoto State government, which has provided substantial support to the military in terms of vehicles, motorcycles, and other resources to address the security crisis.

Muhammad Salisu Anka, the group’s convener, responded to a recent statement from the PDP, accusing the Zamfara government of benefiting from illegal mining, which they claim is the reason for its reluctance to fully cooperate with security agencies.

“The reason they don’t want maximum cooperation with security agencies is that they don’t want peace to return to Zamfara,” Anka said.

The group also criticized the PDP for attacking former Governor Bello Matawalle over his trips to Sokoto State. They noted that Sokoto’s government has done far more to support the military than Zamfara’s administration.

Matawalle’s leadership has led to the successful targeting and elimination of high-profile bandits like Baleri Fakai, Halilu Sububu, and Kachallah Sani Black. Over 5,000 of their associates have also been neutralized, demonstrating the effectiveness of his administration’s strategy to combat banditry.

Despite these successes, the PDP has accused Matawalle of engaging in “eye service,” while many citizens view his actions as essential for achieving lasting peace in the region.

Critics, including Gov Dauda Lawal, have downplayed Matawalle’s achievements, often politicizing security issues. Gov Dauda’s criticisms appear to be an attempt to distract from the progress being made, especially after the killing of Halilu Sububu, a key figure in regional banditry.

The group alleged that Gov Dauda of Zamfara state has ties to illegal mining operations in the region, and that Sububu’s death may have unsettled him. The group claimed, “It is widely believed that Sububu had ties to Dauda, overseeing illegal operations in the region. His death has prompted Gov Dauda to undermine Matawalle’s credibility.”

The group called on the public to remain vigilant and not be swayed by political figures who prioritize personal gain over the security and well-being of Zamfara’s citizens.

The group also affirmed that no amount of slander from Gov Dauda or the PDP can distract Matawalle, now serving as Minister of State for Defence, from his commitment to fighting insecurity.

They praised Matawalle for his decisive actions, which have contributed to restoring peace and security in the Northwest, and urged the PDP to set aside political ambitions and fairly evaluate Matawalle’s contributions to peace in Zamfara.

Lagos FPSO Facility To Add 40,000 bpd To Crude Oil Production — Lokpobiri

0

Minister of Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has announced that the FPSO facility in Lagos, a joint venture between NNPC Limited and Century Nigeria Limited, is nearing completion and will soon contribute an additional 40,000 barrels per day to Nigeria’s crude oil production. Lokpobiri made this statement during an inspection visit to the site on Saturday.

The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility in Lagos is also in partnership with WAEP and ENSERV.

According to Lokpobiri’s statement, the facility is a prime example of how partnerships can strengthen both local expertise and national output, aligning seamlessly with our objective of substantially increasing oil production beyond the current quota, as directed by President Bola Tinubu.

“Supporting local capabilities is essential to driving the increase in our crude oil production. This was my position while inspecting the FPSO facility in Lagos, a joint venture between NNPC Limited and Century Nigeria Limited, in partnership with WAEP and ENSERV.

“I was pleased to see the remarkable progress on the project, which will soon add 40,000 barrels per day to our national crude production.

“This facility is a clear example of how partnerships can enhance both local expertise and national output, aligning perfectly with our goal of significantly increasing oil production beyond current quota as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Lokpobiri said.

In addition, Lokpobiri disclosed that Ken Edward Etete, Group Chairman of Century Group, has confirmed that the ongoing upgrades at the facility are progressing as planned, with full completion expected by the first quarter of next year.

“Interestingly, Mr. Ken Edward Etete, the Group Chairman of Century Group, has assured that the various upgrades underway at the facility are on track, with full completion expected by the first quarter of next year.

“This project demonstrates the kind of commitment and collaboration needed to strengthen our energy sector, and we remain supportive of similar efforts to further enhance our production capacity,” Lokpobiri added.

Despite contributing only a small share to Nigeria’s GDP, the oil sector remains a crucial source of foreign exchange and government revenue.

Its significance extends beyond economic statistics, as it finances key government functions. Fluctuations in crude oil production have a major impact on the country’s fiscal stability.

Increased production enhances revenue, bolstering critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Conversely, a sharp decline in production can lead to revenue deficits, further straining an already fragile economy, as experienced in recent years.

By Charles Ebi

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ,NNPC Limited, in collaboration with partners Shell, TotalEnergies, and Agip, have finalized a significant deal to supply gas to the methanol-manufacturing plant of Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company Ltd.

The gas sales and purchase agreement, which marks a milestone for the project, was signed in Abuja on Friday, nearly nine years after its initial announcement.

Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the agreement as “a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to monetize Nigeria’s vast gas reserves”.

The deal paves the way for Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company and its partners to commence construction of the $3.3 billion project.

NNPC and its partners are set to supply approximately 270 million standard cubic feet of gas daily to the facility, which will be situated on Brass Island in Bayelsa State.

Upon completion, the government anticipates the project will generate over $1.5 billion annually from exports of fertilizers, petrochemicals, and other gas-based products, Ekpo stated.

In his words, “In addition to boosting exports, the project will reduce fertilizer imports by 30%, saving Nigeria approximately $200 million in foreign exchange annually”.

As Africa’s largest crude oil producer, Nigeria is seeking to reduce its dependency on oil by encouraging investment in its underutilized gas reserves, which amount to 200 trillion cubic feet. Currently, much of the country’s gas output is either flared or re-injected into wells.

Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company recently announced an agreement with COSCO Shipping Lines Co. Ltd. To acquire 16 new methanol-powered vessels, which will transport products from its methanol plant to international markets.

At the recently concluded Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China Road and Bridge Corporation ,CRBC, signed a key agreement with Nigeria’s Brass Fertilizer and Petrochemical Company Ltd.

The deal, focused on the development of the Brass Industrial Park and methanol complex, is expected to bring an estimated $3.3 billion into the Nigerian economy.

The Brass Oil and Gas City project seeks to establish Nigeria as a leading hub for downstream oil and gas manufacturing and industrial activities in Africa. Located on Brass Island in Bayelsa State, the development aims to become one of the largest global centers for petrochemical, fertilizer, refinery, and hydrocarbon processing.

These initiatives will help create a world-class, export-oriented oil and gas processing city in Nigeria. So far, $3.5 billion has been committed to various projects within the Brass Oil and Gas City.

The Brass Methanol Project, sponsored by Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company Limited ,BFPCL, is a joint venture between DSV Engineering Limited, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd ,NNPCL, and the Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board ,NCDMB. BFPCL will own and operate the venture.

Acquiring advanced metalworking skills positions individuals for rewarding global careers, with demand expected to grow as industries expand.

Gov Eno Partners FG On Petroleum Depot, To Reduce PMS Landing Cost

0

From INIOBONG SUNDAY, Uyo

Worried by the high cost of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, petrol currently sold at N1,300/litre in Akwa Ibom State has given Governor Umo Eno, a cause for concern, and he has given assurance of his administration’s  readiness to partner relevant Federal agencies for the establishment of petroleum depot in the State.

According to him, the partnership would also seek a moderate landing cost and seamless supply of petroleum products for the people.

Governor Eno, who gave the assurance during the inauguration of the State’s Petroleum Monitoring Committee, PPMC, and the State Security Trust Fund Board, SSTF, at the State Executive Council, SEC, chambers, Government House, Uyo, noted that members of the two bodies have immense work ahead in addressing the energy sector crisis.

He highlighted the huge contributions of the State to the production capacity of Nigeria’s petroleum and gas industry, stressing the necessity of locating a depot in the State to avail the people the privilege of commensurate access to the products.

Clarifying the mandate of the PPMC, the Governor stated that the committee is saddled with the responsibility of working with petroleum marketers to ensure smooth loading and distribution of petroleum products in the State; align pump prices with national figures and elimination of sharp practices that may sabotage the economy of the State or undermine the well-being of the people.

He said: “Your job is direct and simple: You are to work with petroleum marketers to ensure that the loading and distribution of petroleum products in our State are done without causing pain and discomfort to our people. That the pump price of fuel is in line with what obtains elsewhere; that petroleum products are not hoarded for price gouging purposes. You must ensure that any gas or petrol station that engages in such acts are penalized to the fullest extent of the law.

“We are here to serve our people and work to advance their growth and we remain dedicated to doing exactly that! I trust that you will execute the responsibilities associated with the Committee you have just been inaugurated into.

“As Government, we want to build a depot in our State, to cut down the issues related to loading and distribution of petroleum products. We are hopeful that we will get the necessary support from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited to build this depot”.

On security, the Governor reaffirmed that his administration was conscious of its primary responsibility of securing the life and property of the citizenry which underpins the principle of his social contract with the people, as reflected in the ARISE Agenda blueprint of his administration.

These, the Governor outlined, have been reflected in his administration’s strides in the security sector, such as: the establishment of a full- fledged Ministry of Internal Affairs and Waterways, headed by a retired Army General, donation of 14 gun boats to the Maritime Joint Task Force to contain the activities of pirates and other security challenges around the waterways, donation of Hilux trucks to the Police to enable real time response to security issues, among others.

“The primary responsibility of this Board, will among others, pursue private, corporate, local, State and Federal funding opportunities to accomplish the State’s security goals”, the Governor added.

He commended the timely passage of the Bill by the State House of Assembly to establish the Board and the efforts of security agencies in maintaining the atmosphere of peace in the state so far.

In their separate responses, Chairmen of the Board of Security Trust Fund, and the Petroleum Monitoring Committee, Chief Paul Usoro, SAN, and Godwin Ekpo,a former House of Assembly member for Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, respectively, expressed appreciation  for the opportunities, assuring that with their mandates clearly spelt out, they would work assiduously to make the government and the people  proud.

IMF Slashes Borrowing Costs By 36%, Countries Save  $1.2bn Yearly

0

By Yahaya Umar

International Monetary Fund ,IMF, has announced it is reducing the costs for countries that borrow money from it by up to 36%.

In a statement from the global lender on the review of the charge and surcharge policy, the fund noted the challenging global environment coupled with high interest rates necessitated the reduction.

According to the statement, changes were made to how much they charge on loans, which will lower the borrowing cost by 36%, saving countries about $1.2 billion each year.

This reduction will mainly affect fewer countries, from 20 currently to 13 by 2026.

The fund noted that the changes include reducing extra charges on loans and raising the threshold for when these charges apply.

However, some charges will remain to ensure that the IMF has enough money to help countries in need and manage risks.

The goal is to provide affordable loans to member countries while ensuring the IMF stays financially strong. These changes will start on November 1, 2024.

The Managing Director of the IMF, Ms. Kristalina Georgieva said of the review, “In a challenging global environment and at a time of high interest rates, our membership has reached consensus on a comprehensive package that substantially reduces the cost of borrowing while safeguarding the IMF’s financial capacity to support countries in need”.

“The approved measures will lower IMF borrowing costs for members by 36% or about US$1.2 billion annually. The expected number of countries subject to surcharges in fiscal year 2026 will fall from 20 to 13″.

“This is achieved by reducing the margin over the SDR interest rate, raising the threshold for level-based surcharges, lowering the rate for time-based surcharges, and increasing the thresholds for commitment fees. The approved package will take effect on November 1, 2024″.

“While substantially lowered, charges and surcharges remain an essential part of the IMF’s cooperative lending and risk management framework, where all members contribute, and all can benefit from support when needed.

Together, charges and surcharges cover lending intermediate expenses, help accumulate reserves to protect against financial risks and provide incentives for prudent borrowing. This provides a strong financial foundation that allows the IMF to extend vital balance of payments support on affordable terms to member countries when they need it most”.

The International Monetary Fund ,IMF, has long been a critical player in providing financial assistance to countries facing economic challenges, often stepping in when nations struggle with balance of payments issues, currency crises, or debt burdens.

However, the IMF’s lending practices have come under scrutiny in recent years, especially during periods of high global interest rates.

Borrowing from the IMF can be expensive for member countries due to additional charges known as surcharges that are applied on top of the base interest rate.

These surcharges, designed to encourage countries to repay loans quickly and avoid excessive borrowing, became more burdensome as the global economy faced a challenging post-pandemic recovery, rising inflation, and geopolitical tensions.

In response to surging inflation in many countries of the world, Central Banks have adopted a hawkish monetary policy stance jacking up interest rates resulting in an increase in the cost of borrowing for businesses and governments.

However, that monetary policy stance has begun to taper off with the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States cutting interest rates at its last meeting.

Yoruba Group Praises Minister Matawalle’s Security Leadership

Bello Matawalle banditry
Minister of State for Defence and former Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle.

A prominent civil rights coalition, the Yoruba Peoples’ Group (YPG), has commended the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, for his pivotal role in the nation’s ongoing security efforts.

The convener of the group, Folarin Suraj, made this statement while addressing the press in Lagos State on Friday.

The group highlighted the Minister’s exemplary leadership in the fight against terrorism and banditry, emphasizing that his contributions extend beyond the battlefield.

The YPG praised Matawalle’s strategic approach to national security, noting that his dedication to protecting innocent lives and restoring peace to troubled regions has been a beacon of hope for many Nigerians.

“His tireless commitment has significantly strengthened the military’s capabilities and restored hope to communities terrorized by banditry and violence,” the group stated.

One of the most notable achievements under Mattawalle’s leadership was the recent elimination of Mai Hijabi, a notorious terrorist leader who had long plagued Taraba State.

His defeat, the coalition said, marked a turning point in the fight against terrorism and stands as a testament to the Minister’s well-coordinated and sustained efforts.

The coalition also noted the success of ongoing military operations, including the arrests of extremists and informants in critical areas such as Lokoja, Okene, and parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

“These efforts,” it said, “are systematically dismantling the networks that support terrorist and bandit activities.”

Additionally, the recent launch of Operation Fansen Yamma has already yielded significant results, with some terrorists signaling their intent to surrender.

The YPG attributed this development to the continuous pressure and superior coordination of security forces under Mattawalle’s direction.

The coalition reaffirmed its support for the Minister, expressing confidence that his leadership would ultimately bring lasting peace and security to the nation.
