Nigeria Commits To Homegrown Military Solutions, Says Matawalle

0

The honorable Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing local defence production and military innovation through strategic partnerships with the private sector.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of Homeland Protectors and Supplies Ltd, led by Chairman Muhammad Ali bin Aadi, at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, Matawalle outlined plans for a long-term joint venture between the company and the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

The discussions, held at Ship House, focused on capacity-building training and the deployment of advanced technological solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s defence and security framework.

In a statement issued by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, Matawalle emphasised that such collaborations align with the newly enacted DICON Act, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The legislation mandates that all military procurement be channelled through DICON, cementing its pivotal role in Nigeria’s defence industrial ecosystem.

“The Federal Government is dedicated to enhancing indigenous capabilities in defence production,” Matawalle said, underscoring the importance of private sector involvement in achieving these goals.

The partnership is expected to bolster Nigeria’s ability to address security challenges through homegrown solutions, reducing reliance on foreign military imports.

Polio Eradication: UNICEF, Kano Govt Target 4.1m Children

By Yahaya Umar

United Nations Children’s Education Fund, UNICEF, and the Kano State Government have renewed commitment to eradicating polio, targeting no fewer than 4.1 million children for vaccination across the state.

According to official data in November 2024, Nigeria reported one circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2, cVDPV2, positive environmental sample. This follows a period where Nigeria, along with Pakistan and Afghanistan, were the last three countries with endemic polio. While Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus, cVDPV2 continues to be a concern, particularly in the northern states.

The UNICEF and Kono State commitment was made in Kano, yesterday, during a media dialogue on polio and routine immunisation, held ahead of the 2025 World Immunisation week.

Speaking at the event, the state immunisation officer, Mrs Sa’adatu Ibrahim said the World Immunisation Week was part of efforts to sustain Nigeria’s polio-free status and prevent resurgence of the virus.

Ibrahim disclosed that the state had recorded three new confirmed cases of circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus type 2 in 2025, raising fresh concerns over gaps in immunisation coverage and surveillance.

She said two of the cases were detected through Acute Flaccid Paralysis, AFP, surveillance, while the third was identified through Environmental Surveillance.

The cases were reported in Warawa, Bunkure and Nasarawa Local Government Areas.

According to her, the recent cases follow earlier resurgences in 2023 and 2024, when 27 cVDPV2 cases were confirmed in 11 LGAs in 2023 and 31 cases in 17 LGAs in 2024.

Earlier, the chief of UNICEF field office in Kano, Mr Rahma Farah called on the state government to declare a state of emergency on polio and routine immunisation following the resurgence of the disease.

Farah, represented by Mr Michael Banda, UNICEF senior education manager, said the called became imperative as Nigeria has recorded 18 cases of polio in 18 LGAs across nine states.

This, he said, included three in Warawa, Bunkure and Nasarawa LGAs of the state.

“This is unacceptable and must be urgently addressed. Polio knows no boundaries. An outbreak anywhere threatens children everywhere”, he said.

He added that the dialogue organised in collaboration with the Kano State Government and the State Primary Health Care Management Board, sought to mobilise media support ahead of the next polio vaccination campaign.

Farah, revealed that the vaccination scheduled for April 24 to 30, was coinciding with the World Immunisation week.

He stressed the critical role of the media in tackling disinformation, myths and rumours that hinder vaccination.

He noted that more than three billion people had been vaccinated against polio globally since 1988, leading to a sharp decline in cases.

He, however, warned that recent outbreaks showed that the fight was not over.

UNICEF also appealed to local government authorities and urged the Kano State government to demonstrate political will by declaring a state of emergency on polio and ensuring timely release of counterpart funds.

Meanwhile, despite being declared free of wild poliovirus, Nigeria has seen a resurgence of cVDPV2, a variant of polio caused by the oral polio vaccine.

NSA Assures Benue Of FG’s Commitment To End Insecurity

0

National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday, assured the people of Benue State of the federal government’s determination to end insecurity.

Ribadu gave the assurance during a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, following the killing of over 72 persons in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas on Good Friday.

He stated that President Bola Tinubu had emphasised that Benue is not alone in its current security challenges, noting that the entire country is grappling with similar issues.

Describing the killings as a national tragedy, Ribadu said, “It was evil that visited the state.”

He added that the Tinubu administration inherited a deeply troubled nation and is working diligently to repair the damage.

“I am here to commiserate with you and the good people of Benue over the loss of your people and to assure you that the country stands with you.

“The president is with you. This is a trying period for us all.

“This is a moment of sorrow and it is during such times that you know those who truly care.

“What happened is a tragedy — an act of evil. But when evil comes, good people must unite to confront it.

“Benue is an extremely important state in Nigeria. As the food basket of the nation, you are number one in food production and we are proud of you.

“We will solve this problem together. Do not feel alone — this challenge affects us all.

“Our armed forces and security agencies are doing their best, but such incidents persist because it is impossible to deploy personnel to every hamlet.

“Countries go through difficult phases. Insecurity is a tough challenge to overcome.

“Causing harm is easy, but solving the underlying issues is much harder — yet we are doing our best.

“As a government of less than two years, we have already significantly reduced the levels of extreme violence we inherited,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Hyacinth Alia described the situation as a sober moment for the state, saying  Benue had been under siege with immense loss of lives since 2011.

He lamented that killings by terrorists, bandits and militias had devastated the state’s economy.

“These people have no reason to coexist with peaceful citizens. We have suffered the loss of lives, farmlands and property.

“There are currently 17 IDP camps in the state and it has been difficult to return our people to their ancestral homes.

“Sankera is the headquarters of food production in the state, yet the attacks have been persistent and unrelenting.

“Instead of a Good Friday, we experienced a Black Friday, marked by venomous attacks on Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo.

“It is a devastating time for us. We lost 72 lives — it is unbearable. I have maintained regular contact with the NSA.

“Our security agencies have worked tirelessly to contain the attacks, but we urgently need more support.

“The president has been very supportive, and we are hopeful that more help is on the way,” the governor said.(NAN)

FG Inaugurates Revitalisation Plan For 901 PHCs

0

Federal government, through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, has announced the revitalisation of more than 901 Primary Health Centres, PHCs.

Additionally, it plans to upgrade 2,701 others as part of  efforts to ensure that at least one fully functional PHC exists per ward nationwide.

Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Muyi Aina said this during the agency’s first quarterly news conference for 2025 in Abuja, yesterday.

Aina explained that the initiative was part of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme and the Health Sector Strategic Blueprint.

He noted that NPHCDA had outlined a three-pillar approach aimed at strengthening the PHC system, restoring public trust in healthcare services and improving the country’s frontline health security.

“Our goal is to rebuild trust in our health system by ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to quality and functional primary health care.

“The agency has assessed more than 18,000 PHCs nationwide and identified service delivery gaps that are now being addressed through increased federal investments and strategic partnerships with states and development partners.

“To support this, the agency is increasing the number of PHCs funded under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, BHCPF, from 8,406 to 17,600.

“High-volume PHCs will now receive N800,000 per quarter, while lower-volume centres will get N600,000—up from the previous flat rate of N300,000,” he added.

Aina also introduced new digital tracking and accountability tools, including a real-time public dashboard for PHC status (https://phc.nphcda.gov.ng) and a digitised financial management app already piloted in four states.

According to him, these tools are expected to promote transparency and efficiency in PHC operations.

“Key highlights of the plan include: The launch of a digitised financial management system to streamline fund usage and reporting across PHCs.

“Expanded use of BHCPF’s four gateways: NPHCDA, National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, and National  Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, NEMSAS, for infrastructure, health security and emergency response.

“A commitment to the accountable use of the $1 billion mobilised by the federal government for PHC revitalisation.

“Implementation of tiered funding models based on PHC capacity and service volume, along with strengthened workforce development and partnership with states to ensure skilled and consistent staffing.

Aina reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to reach every child and community with life-saving vaccines, as Nigeria marked the African Vaccination Week 2025.

He emphasised the theme, “Immunisation for All is Humanity Possible,” and urged citizens and the media to utilise the public dashboard to monitor PHCs progress and contribute to transparency in the country’s health delivery system.

Head of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation at WHO, Dr Eshetu Wassie  noted that immunisation is not only a cornerstone of primary health care, but also a fundamental human right.

He stressed the effectiveness of vaccines, which had saved more than154 million lives in the past 50 years.

“As we gather for 2025 and African Vaccination Week, I urge all of us, governments, partners, health workers, communities and the media to recommit to this life-saving mission,” Wassie said.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Ms Cristian Munduate, also emphasised the need to reach the most vulnerable populations.

She noted that one in three infants remain unreached and  “zero-dose” children were the most vulnerable.

Munduate called for stronger partnerships, increased domestic funding and community-driven solutions to address barriers like insecurity and vaccine access. (NAN)

Pope Francis For Burial April 26, Says Vatican

0

Vatican has announced that Pope Francis would be buried on Saturday, April 26.

Pope Francis died from stroke and heart failure on Easter Monday, according to an announcement by the Vatican, after battling a protracted illness.

The burial of a pope typically occurs between the fourth and sixth day after death, according to norms first established in 1966 and reaffirmed in later ritual updates. This time frame allows for several essential rites and traditions.

The Holy See press office said yesterday that the pontiff’s body would be transferred to St Peter’s Basilica today (Wednesday) to lie in state until his funeral on Saturday morning.

Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista will preside at the funeral mass, which will be co-celebrated by patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests from across the globe, the statement added.

In his final wishes, Francis asked to be buried without elaborate decoration, marked only by the inscription,  ‘Franciscus.’

The pope stated that an anonymous benefactor would cover the cost of his funeral.

His will was written in 2022.

The last pope to die in office before Francis was Pope John Paul II, who passed on April 2, 2005.

Pope Benedict XVI, who succeeded him, resigned in 2013 — the first pope to resign since 1294.

Benedict XVI passed away on December 31, 2022 at  Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican at the age of 95.

Francis, his successor, died at 88.

He was the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to be ordained pope. He was also the first to take the name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.

ECOWAS Meets In Ghana Over Niger, Mali, B’Faso Exit

Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is meeting in Accra, Ghana, to discuss the withdrawal of the Republics of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso from the regional bloc.

The organisation in a statement issued yesterday said the discussions would last two days.

ECOWAS, in the statement, said key items on the agenda would include discussions on modalities of the countries withdrawal and the potential implication for the bloc’s institutions operating within those states.

“The bloc will also address other related matters of regional importance,” the statement said.

The meeting coincides with ECOWAS golden jubilee celebration in Accra.

The three West African countries left the bloc after ECOWAS condemned the military leaders who ousted democratically elected governments in their respective states.

Mali’s military leaders overthrew the  civilian government in 2020 and 2021, followed by Burkina Faso in 2022 and Niger Republic in 2023, which led to these countries being suspended and subjected to sanctions by ECOWAS.

The situation escalated when, in July  2024, the military juntas of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced their decision to irrevocably turn their backs on ECOWAS.

They accused the regional bloc of imposing “inhumane and irresponsible” sanctions and failing to address their internal security crises.

This unprecedented move marked the first time in ECOWAS history that member states sought to leave the organisation.

After nearly a year of mediation efforts to prevent disintegration with little success, it officially approved an exit timeline for these three coup-hit nations spanning January to July.

The countries have since formed a new regional bloc called the Alliance of Sahel States, AES, and have imposed a levy on ECOWAS member states, disrupting the free trade that the region enjoyed and escalating tensions.

Taraba: NUJ Honours Kente As ‘Philanthropist Man Of The Year’

0

From Ben Adaji, Jalingo

It was jubilation galore  when Chief  David Kente landed at the Danbaba Suntai Airport Jalingo on  April 17 to receive the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, award as ” Philanthropist Man of the Year.”

The reception that occasioned his arrival left no one in doubt that Tarabans are desperately yearning for him to  steer the affairs of the state, as the placards they displayed glaringly referred to him as their next governor.

The assorted placards with different inscriptions such as “DSK come and rescue Taraba State,” “2027, DSK is our choice”  “Tarabans yearn for DSK 2027” and several others,  appear to be the resolution of the majority of the people  from the Central, Northern and Southern parts of the state who converged on the airport.

Thousands of Taraba indigenes have benefited either directly or indirectly from the generousity of Chief  Kente, who recently bagged the NUJ Philanthropist Man of the Year award.

Our correspondent reports that

through the DSK Foundation, Kente has been able to reach out to people in various spheres of life, including health, education, skills acquisition and empowerment, rehabilitation and resettlement, construction of bridges and culvets among several others.

The sheer magnitude of his philanthropic gesture and its outreach have  endeared him  to the people and as successive governments continue to perform abysmally, calls for him to take over the reigns of power in the state come 2027 are intensifying daily.

Speaking during the Taraba NUJ Press Week to mark the 70th anniversary in Nigeria  Chairman of the Union, Comrade Mathew Elud-Jen disclosed that the awardees, who were carefully selected, have distinguished themselves in different facets of life.

“I stand here to tell you that Chief Kente, who bagged the ‘Philanthropist Man of the Year’ Award is an exceptional character whose kind gesture has no boundaries. I wish to declare that we are yet to find his equal in Taraba State.”

The Chairman of the occasion, Ambassador John Musa, eulogised Chief Kente for his generosity and service to humanity. “DSK Taraba is proud of you,” he said.

A cross-section of Tarabans who spoke to our correspondent wished that the  chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and business merchant is given the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the state come 2027.

A former Commissioner and APC stalwart, Shuaibu Ataka, said “with the abysmal performance of the present  administration in Taraba State,  it will be easier for APC to wrestle power in 2027 if the party allows  Kente who enjoys the overwhelming support of the people to fly the governorship ticket.

“As you know, the APC has lost consistently in the state because of disagreements among key players over who flies the ticket, but if President Bola Tinubu and the party leadership want to wrestle power in Taraba for the first time, they should try Chief Kente,” he advised.

On March 3, when Kente celebrated his 60th birthday in Wukari, his country home it was indeed an assembly of who is who in the state.

Kente, popularly known as DSK, ( born on March 3, 1965) is a  businessman, politician and philanthropist. He  is the founder and CEO of DSK Group International Ltd and an NGO, DSK Foundation.

No doubt he is an accomplished businessman and renowned politician, who was celebrated for his integrity, brilliance, expertise, charisma and outstanding commitment to philanthropic gesture and kindness to humanity.

According to an elder statesman, Mr Orya Clement, “he is a rare gem, a detribalised gentleman, always sounding ebullient, happy and a captivating businessman, he is also an APC chieftain that is endowed with exceptional leadership traits and resilient for positive transformation.

“It is indeed a statement of fact that Kente is an unrepentant apostle of revolutionary change in the nation’s political circle,” he said.

As a respected leader, he has made significant impact through his DSK Foundation, which has provided scholarship to hundreds of students, donations to orphanages and supported the less privileged in the society.

His philanthropic work has earned him several awards, including the “Ambassador of Peace and Societal Development” and “Icon of Humanitarian Services” by the Taraba State Students Union, besides the NUJ award among  others.

Recently, he was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by  Kwararafa University, Wukari during its second and combined convocation ceremony. It was a momentous occasion that celebrated his achievements and  immense contributions to the society.

Kente, who worked with the National Assembly Service Commission before retirement, has businesses spread across the state and beyond where thousands are gainfully employed.

He was the candidate of Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the 2015 Taraba State gubernatorial election where he gave the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Darius Ishaku a run for his money. He, however, lost to Ishaku and later joined the All Progressives Congress in 2016. DSK aspired for the number one seat in Taraba State under APC in 2023 but again lost the ticket to Senator Emmanuel Bwacha in a controversial circumstance that ended in court.

He once served as a member of the North-East Development Commission, NEDC, where he was the chairman, Board of Trustees of its Education Endowment Fund.

As the race for 2027 begins and the APC is working to put its house together, calls for Kente to join the race continue to thicken.

Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari, recently told journalists that the APC is poised to take over Taraba State in 2027.

According to Maigari “the only thing that has stopped the APC from taking over Taraba all this while is  internal wranglings. I think most of us have resolved to work together for our common good. As we speak, I am one of the leaders of the party in the state and I have  resolved  not to contest for anything. Instead, I will ensure that things are done right and everyone is provided with a level playing field so that whoever emerges as the candidate of the party will be generally accepted and the rest of us will team up to give the party victory”.

What may pose a challenge is securing the ticket of the party since he is from Wukari Local Government, same as the incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas.

The people of the Central and Northern zones may not be willing to have another person from the Southern Zone take over the reigns of power with the tendency of running for another eight years. Already, the zone would hold the reigns for 12 years by 2027. Consequently, if Governor  Kefas is to run for a second tenure, it will come to 16 consecutive years.

However, if Kente is to take over and run for two tenures, that will come to 20 consecutive years, while the North and Central zones watch.

However, with the level of disenchantment  with the present administration, most people will prefer a replacement, someone who has been on ground with the people and knows their problem and the available opportunities.

Kente does not only fit the profile,  but has equally warmed his way into the hearts of the people and is considered highly detribalised. As such, the people may look beyond zoning and go for who will actually deliver the dividends of democracy.
