From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

Group of coconut farmers Wednesday urged the Osun State government to collaborate and support their initiative to cultivate 10,000 acres of land for coconut production that can provide job security for 500,000 youths.

Speaking at a capacity building seminar for farmers in Osogbo,  National Coordinator, Knowledge is Power Coconut Growers and Processor Association of Nigeria, Pastor Adewumi Adeyemi, in his keynote address, said the project will create at least 500,000 jobs, ranging from cultivation to value-added product development.

Adeyemi said the gesture, which would create job security, will reduce crime among  youths in the state.

According to him, “With 10,000 acres of land, we expect to create at least 500,000 jobs, from coconut cultivation to value-added product development. When there is job security in any state, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality will reduce drastically.

“As the name of our organisation implies, knowledge is power  and it is only when you acquire knowledge that you can disseminate information about it.

“Coconut farming will boost the economy of the state. Today’s seminar is about capacity building and we believe that initially, we need to build structures and prepare to collaborate with the state government for partnership. Through this project, we aim to create job opportunities for young generations.

‘My advice to the general public is to consider farming, alongside other livelihoods. Planting coconut, in addition to yam, cassava, and maize, can earn us a good living.

“The leaders are knowledgeable about this crop and we can help the state government establish a Coconut Development Association, which can generate significant internal revenue and boost its revenue. Coconut products have immense potentials.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Maruf Olawale, who was represented Mr Olatunbosun Idris expressed concern that Nigerians have overlooked the immense benefits of coconut.

He disclosed the vast potentials of coconut, drawing comparisons with cocoa, a crop that has been widely utilised in the country.

He lamented that despite coconut’s potentials, Nigeria has failed to tap into its opportunities.

Meanwhile, chairman and organiser of the seminar,  Jayeoba Alagbada stated that coconut farming is one of the most lucrative cash crops across the globe.

Alagbada noted that every farmer will benefit from this opportunity through access to loans from the Bank of Agriculture and Bank of Industry.

Alagbada urged  participants of the maiden seminars to work assiduously to ensure coconut plantation.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the State Coordinator, Comrade Bisi Olaniyan, commended the national chapter for organising the mid-edition seminar in the state, which brings together, experts, farmers and stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices in the coconut industry.

NDLEA Advocates Drug Integrity Test For Corps Members, Couples

0

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (rtd), has advocated drug integrity tests for corps members, prospective couples and others aimed at discouraging substance abuse.

Marwa said the proposed integrity tests were not meant as punitive, but preventive measures aimed at discouraging substance abuse.

He said the initiative was also intended to provide early intervention and treatment for individuals “who test positive before their condition deteriorates into drug dependence and other health complications.”

The chairman made this known during a meeting with the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, who paid a courtesy visit to the NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, yesterday.

Congratulating Nafiu on his recent appointment, Marwa described  NYSC as a national treasure and a vital instrument for promoting unity in Nigeria.

He expressed concern over the growing drug menace in the country, saying, “The drug scourge has continued to devastate our kids, families and communities.

“Everywhere you go in the country, drug abuse is a problem. One in seven Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 use drugs.”

While commending efforts to cut off access to drugs, Marwa emphasised the importance of reducing demand, especially among young people, through collaborative initiatives like the drug integrity test.

“One of our key strategies is the drug integrity test, which we are advocating that NYSC should adopt for corps members.

“While we focus on reducing the drug supply, we are equally committed to reducing demand through prevention, counselling and rehabilitation,” he said.

Marwa also commended the introduction of War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, clubs in NYSC orientation camps, describing it as a commendable step.

He added, “Another important area for collaboration is requiring drug integrity tests for corps members.

“Similarly, we advocate that couples intending to marry undergo drug test. Early detection helps prevent addiction and its associated psychiatric and social problems.”

He proposed  collaboration in posting corps members who studied Guidance and Counselling, Psychology, Nursing or Psychiatry to NDLEA Counselling and Treatment Centres nationwide as part of their one-year national service.

This, he said would equip them with valuable experience in rehabilitation and psychosocial support.

In response, Nafiu, accompanied by top officials of the scheme, praised the drug integrity test initiative, describing it as “a fantastic idea.”

He assured Marwa that the scheme would consider the proposal and develop guidelines for deploying corps members with the relevant qualifications to NDLEA commands across the country.

He also commended Marwa for the remarkable achievements recorded by  NDLEA under his leadership and reaffirmed  NYSC’s commitment to strengthen its partnership with the agency. NAN

The Minister outlined ways the creative economy can contribute to climate solutions, including raising awareness through art and media, developing sustainable fashion and textiles, promoting renewable energy solutions, and eco-tourism and cultural heritage tourism.

“The creative economy has the potential to be a powerful force in addressing some of our most pressing environmental issues.
One of the key roles of the creative industries is to educate and raise awareness. The power of storytelling, film, music, and visual arts can play a transformative role in communicating the urgency of climate action. Through documentaries, songs, performances, and visual art, we can engage communities, inform them about the risks posed by climate change, and inspire them to take action.”

Minister Musawa also said that developing sustainable fashion and textiles using eco-friendly materials and practices can reduce environmental degradation. She recommended leveraging eco-tourism and cultural heritage tourism to preserve natural resources and promote local culture.

“We can use our local textiles to create a fashion industry that not only celebrates our cultural identity but also helps combat climate change by reducing its environmental footprint.

“By investing in training and innovation in the fashion sector, we can create jobs for our youth, particularly women, and position Katsina as a leader in sustainable fashion in the country”.

She called for strong partnerships between government, private sector, NGOs, and local communities to implement solutions and urged all stakeholders to take up the challenge of climate change with creativity and passion, working together to build a sustainable future for Katsina State.

Through Climate Action Cooperatives, our administration will annually train 15,000 of our women and youth in green skills. From solar engineering to sustainable forestry, we will ensure no one is left behind.
