Taraba: NUJ Honours Kente As ‘Philanthropist Man Of The Year’

0

From Ben Adaji, Jalingo

It was jubilation galore  when Chief  David Kente landed at the Danbaba Suntai Airport Jalingo on  April 17 to receive the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, award as ” Philanthropist Man of the Year.”

The reception that occasioned his arrival left no one in doubt that Tarabans are desperately yearning for him to  steer the affairs of the state, as the placards they displayed glaringly referred to him as their next governor.

The assorted placards with different inscriptions such as “DSK come and rescue Taraba State,” “2027, DSK is our choice”  “Tarabans yearn for DSK 2027” and several others,  appear to be the resolution of the majority of the people  from the Central, Northern and Southern parts of the state who converged on the airport.

Thousands of Taraba indigenes have benefited either directly or indirectly from the generousity of Chief  Kente, who recently bagged the NUJ Philanthropist Man of the Year award.

Our correspondent reports that

through the DSK Foundation, Kente has been able to reach out to people in various spheres of life, including health, education, skills acquisition and empowerment, rehabilitation and resettlement, construction of bridges and culvets among several others.

The sheer magnitude of his philanthropic gesture and its outreach have  endeared him  to the people and as successive governments continue to perform abysmally, calls for him to take over the reigns of power in the state come 2027 are intensifying daily.

Speaking during the Taraba NUJ Press Week to mark the 70th anniversary in Nigeria  Chairman of the Union, Comrade Mathew Elud-Jen disclosed that the awardees, who were carefully selected, have distinguished themselves in different facets of life.

“I stand here to tell you that Chief Kente, who bagged the ‘Philanthropist Man of the Year’ Award is an exceptional character whose kind gesture has no boundaries. I wish to declare that we are yet to find his equal in Taraba State.”

The Chairman of the occasion, Ambassador John Musa, eulogised Chief Kente for his generosity and service to humanity. “DSK Taraba is proud of you,” he said.

A cross-section of Tarabans who spoke to our correspondent wished that the  chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and business merchant is given the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the state come 2027.

A former Commissioner and APC stalwart, Shuaibu Ataka, said “with the abysmal performance of the present  administration in Taraba State,  it will be easier for APC to wrestle power in 2027 if the party allows  Kente who enjoys the overwhelming support of the people to fly the governorship ticket.

“As you know, the APC has lost consistently in the state because of disagreements among key players over who flies the ticket, but if President Bola Tinubu and the party leadership want to wrestle power in Taraba for the first time, they should try Chief Kente,” he advised.

On March 3, when Kente celebrated his 60th birthday in Wukari, his country home it was indeed an assembly of who is who in the state.

Kente, popularly known as DSK, ( born on March 3, 1965) is a  businessman, politician and philanthropist. He  is the founder and CEO of DSK Group International Ltd and an NGO, DSK Foundation.

No doubt he is an accomplished businessman and renowned politician, who was celebrated for his integrity, brilliance, expertise, charisma and outstanding commitment to philanthropic gesture and kindness to humanity.

According to an elder statesman, Mr Orya Clement, “he is a rare gem, a detribalised gentleman, always sounding ebullient, happy and a captivating businessman, he is also an APC chieftain that is endowed with exceptional leadership traits and resilient for positive transformation.

“It is indeed a statement of fact that Kente is an unrepentant apostle of revolutionary change in the nation’s political circle,” he said.

As a respected leader, he has made significant impact through his DSK Foundation, which has provided scholarship to hundreds of students, donations to orphanages and supported the less privileged in the society.

His philanthropic work has earned him several awards, including the “Ambassador of Peace and Societal Development” and “Icon of Humanitarian Services” by the Taraba State Students Union, besides the NUJ award among  others.

Recently, he was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by  Kwararafa University, Wukari during its second and combined convocation ceremony. It was a momentous occasion that celebrated his achievements and  immense contributions to the society.

Kente, who worked with the National Assembly Service Commission before retirement, has businesses spread across the state and beyond where thousands are gainfully employed.

He was the candidate of Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the 2015 Taraba State gubernatorial election where he gave the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Darius Ishaku a run for his money. He, however, lost to Ishaku and later joined the All Progressives Congress in 2016. DSK aspired for the number one seat in Taraba State under APC in 2023 but again lost the ticket to Senator Emmanuel Bwacha in a controversial circumstance that ended in court.

He once served as a member of the North-East Development Commission, NEDC, where he was the chairman, Board of Trustees of its Education Endowment Fund.

As the race for 2027 begins and the APC is working to put its house together, calls for Kente to join the race continue to thicken.

Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari, recently told journalists that the APC is poised to take over Taraba State in 2027.

According to Maigari “the only thing that has stopped the APC from taking over Taraba all this while is  internal wranglings. I think most of us have resolved to work together for our common good. As we speak, I am one of the leaders of the party in the state and I have  resolved  not to contest for anything. Instead, I will ensure that things are done right and everyone is provided with a level playing field so that whoever emerges as the candidate of the party will be generally accepted and the rest of us will team up to give the party victory”.

What may pose a challenge is securing the ticket of the party since he is from Wukari Local Government, same as the incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas.

The people of the Central and Northern zones may not be willing to have another person from the Southern Zone take over the reigns of power with the tendency of running for another eight years. Already, the zone would hold the reigns for 12 years by 2027. Consequently, if Governor  Kefas is to run for a second tenure, it will come to 16 consecutive years.

However, if Kente is to take over and run for two tenures, that will come to 20 consecutive years, while the North and Central zones watch.

However, with the level of disenchantment  with the present administration, most people will prefer a replacement, someone who has been on ground with the people and knows their problem and the available opportunities.

Kente does not only fit the profile,  but has equally warmed his way into the hearts of the people and is considered highly detribalised. As such, the people may look beyond zoning and go for who will actually deliver the dividends of democracy.

FG Earmarks N120bn For Youth Skills Training

0

Federal government has approved N120 billion for the commencement of skills acquisition for youths across the country.

Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad disclosed this at the Adolescent and Youth Ministerial Dialogue on Wellbeing, Health and Development in Abuja, yesterday.

The event, organised by Plan International in partnership with International Federation of Red Cross and UNESCO, aims to ensure inclusive policy making and amplify the voices of adolescents and youths in national development efforts.

The event has as  theme: “From Words to Action.”

Ahmad, represented by  his Senior Special Assistant, Professor Ali Idris, said the initiative was targeted at vulnerable youths, including Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, across the geopolitical zones.

She said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ and is expected to provide sustainable opportunities for youth employment and empowerment.

”If you have a registered company capable of training at least 60,000 people within three months, the ministry will pay that company. Likewise, individuals who undergo training will receive a starter pack upon completion,” she said.

She emphasised  government’s intention to involve youths in decision-making processes, noting that a stakeholders meeting would soon be convened to allow young people  voice their priorities and co-create actionable plans.

”This programme is not being done in isolation. We are working with  youths to identify the areas they consider most critical. Once stakeholders meet, we will move to implementation,” she added.

Speaking on economic realities, she said many companies are leaving the country and not everyone would secure government jobs.

According to her, the best alternative is for young people to acquire relevant skills that will make them employable locally or internationally.

In addition to skills acquisition, she said  government is tackling the issue of out-of-school children.

”There are over 10 million out-of-school children in Nigeria. To address this, we have introduced the Lumina programme, targeting hard-to-reach areas, especially girls.

“The programme aims to provide literacy and numeracy education,” she explained.

She also said that the initiative would commence in the next two months, as registration had already begun online.

In the same vein,  the Advocacy League Programme Officer for Plan International Nigeria, Jonathan Abakpa, stressed the need for young people to be involved in national conversation on shaping their future.

Abakpa recalled that two years ago, the minister of health and other stakeholders endorsed the Adolescent Living Healthy and Tribal Nigeria Framework for West and Central Africa.

”The last conference led to the creation of Adolescent and Young People’s Roadmap, which serves as a guide for policy and intervention.

“This year’s inter-ministerial dialogue allows youths to engage directly with ministers and demand implementation of their priorities,” Abakba said.

He stressed that youth-led advocacy had begun to yield results, citing increased budget allocation for education and health.

He noted that persistent challenge including out-of-school children, teenage pregnancies and early marriages still require urgent action.

Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian Children’s Parliament, Ibrahim Sunnoma, urged  government to move from commitment to action.

”There are many laws and policies already in place. What we need now is implementation. Words are just air in motion; action must be our foundation,” he said.

Sunnoma criticised the neglect of vulnerable children, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where  Almajiris still roam the streets in dire conditions.

”I urge  government to prioritise children on the streets, especially the Almajiris. Strengthen the Almajiri system, integrate western education and provide shelter, food and a sustainable livelihood,” he said.

The event featured stakeholders from the education, health and humanitarian sectors. NAN

FG Backs Dual Mandate To Boost CoE Enrollment

0

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has urged stakeholders in Colleges of Education, CoEs, to fully embrace the dual mandate that allows these institutions to award both bachelor’s degrees and National Certificate in Education, NCE, qualifications.

According to him, this approach will boost enrolment, enhance the quality of teacher education and eliminate the need to convert Colleges of Education into universities.

Alausa made this call yesterday in Abuja during a follow-up meeting on the resolutions from the last Biannual Stakeholders’ Meeting.

He emphasised the need for reforms within Colleges of Education, underlining the importance of adapting to modern demands and technological advancements.

The minister noted that traditional teaching methods are no longer sufficient, and urged educators to integrate technology, critical thinking, and computational skills into their curricula.

“We once had a strong educational system, and that’s what we are working hard to restore. All hands are on deck to achieve this.

“We must tackle the high number of out-of-school children and reduce learning poverty across the country. As teachers, you are at the centre of driving this change, and you must also challenge yourselves.

“The way we taught 30 or 50 years ago is no longer relevant. Education and teaching methods are evolving. You must start thinking about how to use technology in the classroom,” he said.

Alausa stressed the need for educators to harness educational technology (edtech) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

Addressing declining enrolment in Colleges of Education, he urged administrators and staff to support the ongoing reforms, warning that the survival of these institutions depends on their ability to adapt.

“With this dual mandate, there is no need for conversion to university status. You should be the ones pushing for implementation, not the other way around. It’s a matter of your survival.

“The government has secured the future of Colleges of Education. It is now up to you to sustain them. Failure to embrace this mandate could lead to extinction.

“With this reform, there’s absolutely no justification for any College of Education to seek university status,” he added.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the reforms and improving the welfare of educators.

He also announced that the dual mandate would take effect from the upcoming academic session in September, and encouraged institutions to prepare accordingly.

In response, the President of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, Mr Smart Olugbeko, noted that the success of the dual mandate hinges on addressing various challenges and complexities.

He expressed optimism that the government would work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and improved quality in teacher education.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the dual mandate, which permits Colleges of Education to award both degrees and NCE qualifications, was signed into law in 2023.

The policy had been under discussion for years, with numerous committees recommending its adoption. (NAN)

Nasarawa Govt Supports FG’s Measles-rubella Vaccination Drive

0

Nasarawa State government has pledged its support for the federal government’s proposed measles-rubella vaccination to be introduced in October.

The measles-rubella vaccination is to be administered to children between nine-15 months through routine immunisation to eliminate measles and rubella.

Governor Abdullahi Sule pledged the support at a stakeholders meeting yesterday in Lafia, ahead of the introduction of the vaccine.

The stakeholder’s meeting was organised by the Nasarawa State Primary HealthCare Development Agency, NSPHCDA, in collaboration with the office of the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Silifat Sule, and Centre for Wellbeing and Integrated Nutrition Solutions, C-WINS.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, emphasised that his administration accorded topmost priority to the health and wellbeing of the residents.

Sule explained that the vaccination would not only protect children but also strengthen the economy and the healthcare system of the state.

Sule, therefore, urged chairmen of the 13 local government areas and their wives, caregivers, traditional and religious leaders to ensure that the programme succeeds.

The governor also promised that his administration would make the vaccine available and accessible in all healthcare facilities across the state.

“I strongly endorse the measles-rubella vaccine to be introduced in October 2025.

“Measles and Rubella are highly contagious and are the cause of deafness, blindness, heart defects, brain damage and even death in children.

“I therefore, urge all parents, guardians, caregivers, traditional and religious leaders, health workers and community influencers to ensure that children aged 9 to 15 months receive this life-saving vaccine,” Sule said.

In his remark, Dr Usman Iskilu-Saleh executive secretary of NSPHCDA, appreciated Governor Sule for demonstrating his love and care for children by endorsing the vaccination exercise.

He noted that the two-in-one measles-rubella vaccine is meant for the effective protection of children against the dreaded contagious disease, which could lead to deafness, blindness, heart defect and brain damage.

“The overall goal of the meeting is to mobilise strong support and sustain commitment for the effective integration of the muscles-rubella vaccine into the routine immunisation schedule,” he added.

Earlier, Dr Gaza Gwamna, the state’s Commissioner for Health, appreciated the stakeholders for attending the meeting despite their busy schedules.

The commissioner assured that the state would emerge first position in the measles-rubella vaccination exercise among other states in the country as it did during the COVID-19 vaccination.

He, however, announced the outbreak of measles in the Rukubi community of the Doma Local Government Area of the state. (NAN).

In the meantime, Zulum also charged the contractors to ensure strict compliance with quality specifications and timely completion.

The governor, however, appealed to residents for calm while assuring them that the state government is committed to addressing the problem. Group Tasks Akwa Ibom Lawmakers, Gov Eno On Constituency Projects

0

From INIOBONG SUNDAY, Uyo

A socio – political group championing for good governance, social justice, equitable rights and better welfare for the people of Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, has decried poor infrastructure and lack of empowerment programmes for the people of the zone.

Frowning at what they described as poor representation by the lawmakers representing the zone in the House of Assembly, the group noted that effective representation by the Assembly lawmakers has robbed the zone of constituency projects and called for a positive change.

Under the auspices of the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Constituency Alliance, UOCA, the leaders of the group including the Director General, Engr.Twoweeks  Umoh, and Secretary, Elder Utip Etiebet, rose from their Evaluation Meeting, faulting the legislators’ performance in the last two years as below par.

According to the group in a communique signed by the duo of Engr. Umoh, and Elder Etiebet, the two lawmakers – Hon. Enem Udom (Ukanafun) and Prince Sampson Idiong (Oruk Anam), were not deserving of a pass mark, for their failure to connect with the constituents through constituency projects.

They, therefore, appealed to the lawmakers to up their game as their performance index could not be measured side by side with projects they executed as many infrastructure are begging for attention including educational facilities.

The communique reads: “From our diligence evaluation of the position of things, two broad resolutions, stated below, were taken at the meeting:

“The two respective representatives of Ukanafun and Oruk Anam State Constituencies at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly – Messrs Emem Udom and Sampson Idiong – are called upon to give urgent consideration to the importance of organising constituency briefings in their separate constituencies.

“Our belief is that such assemblage will afford the legislators an organised forum to present the scorecard of their representation, particularly on their lawmaking inputs at the State legislature and their developmental contributions to the constituencies.

“It is also reasoned that the constituency briefings will also serve as feedback avenues, as the people will have opportunity of appraising their respective lawmakers, as well as offer their takes on how best the lawmakers should serve  their interests”.

Besides, the elders, leaders and stakeholders expressed concern over the collapsing teaching and learning infrastructure in the constituency, and appealed to the Governor Umo Eno-led government to Intervene in order to avoid the crisis of out – of – school children in the zone.

“Arising from dilapidated infrastructure in many public schools in the two local government areas, the attention of the Akwa Ibom State Government is called upon with a view to fixing facilities at the primary and secondary schools in Ukanafun and Oruk Anam local government areas, where pupils and students learn under environmental conditions that are injurious to personal health devoid of learning standards.

“As a matter of fact, there are a number of schools with no roofs and desks, inadequate teachers and  lack of commitment on the part of the teachers in almost all the schools in the areas.

“We, therefore, call on the State government to urgently renovate the classrooms, provide enough desks and other learning materials, deploy adequate manpower, including inspectorate team, and other measures considered necessary to improve teaching in the public schools”, the communique stressed.

PDP Appoints Caretaker Committees For Bayelsa, Edo States

0
PDP

Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, South-South Zonal Working Committee ,ZWC, has appointed caretaker committees to oversee the affairs of the party in Bayelsa and Edo states for three months.

This followed the approval for the setting up of caretaker committees for both states by the ZWC at a meeting presided over by Chief Dan Orbih, National Vice-Chairman of the party

This is contained in a statement by Mr Etim Isong, Zonal Publicity Secretary, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, in Abuja yesterday.

Isong explained that the decision to set up the committees for both states followed the dissolution of the State Working Committee ,SWC, of Bayelsa and the caretaker committee in Edo.

He said that this was on account of what the ZWC described as various acts of gross misconduct by the dissolved executives.

He added that these actions were in clear breach of the party’s constitution that led to the poor handling of internal crises rocking the PDP in both states.

‘’For Edo, we took into reckoning the poor performance and woeful outing by the party in the state in the last governorship elections.

‘’So, we are taking these decisions in the best interest of the PDP after a careful review of the activities of the party in both states.

‘’This is in line with the Constitution of the party as amended in 2017, particularly Articles 10(1),(f),(g),(k), and (4) as well as Articles 26(2),(a), 27(2)(a&b), 58(1),(a),(c),(i),(j), and 59(1)(f)

“The zonal working committee hopes that this bold move will strengthen the party’s foundation and ensure effective leadership in both states’’, he said.

He called on the newly appointed leaders to pursue genuine reconciliation among members and foster the cohesion necessary for repositioning the party in both states.

Bagudu Says Census Committee Will Drive Funding and Planning Strategy

0

Joel Ajayi

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, clarified on Monday in Abuja that the newly formed Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census is an ad hoc technical body tasked with identifying funding sources and ensuring proper planning for Nigeria’s upcoming census.

Speaking at the committee’s inaugural meeting—following its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu last week—Bagudu explained that the committee was established to provide expert guidance on financing strategies, institutional coordination, and setting realistic timelines for the census exercise.

Bagudu, who chairs the committee, noted that it is distinct from the National Population Commission (NPC), the statutory body responsible for conducting population and housing censuses. He emphasized that this advisory committee was formed to support the NPC with technical and financial planning based on its members’ strategic positions in government.

Members of the committee include NPC Chairman Mr. Nasir Kwarra (Secretary), Minister of Finance Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Information Mr. Mohammed Idris, FIRS Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji, NIMC DG Ms. Bisoye Coker-Odusote, Presidential aide Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, and SSA to the President on Administration Mr. Temilola Adekunle-Johnson.

Bagudu outlined the committee’s five-point terms of reference, including:

Reviewing the current census budget in line with fiscal realities and national priorities,

Proposing viable funding sources—both domestic and international,

Developing a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy,

Evaluating the NPC’s logistical and technical readiness,

Recommending a practical and realistic date for the census, based on funding and national conditions.

He stressed the significance of the committee’s role, saying, “A national census is not a routine administrative exercise; it is a sovereign investment in evidence-based governance.”

Bagudu also noted that President Tinubu expects the committee to submit preliminary recommendations within three weeks, underscoring the urgency and importance of the assignment.

The committee’s formation followed a February 24, 2025 briefing from the NPC to the President, in which it proposed a digital and biometric-based census with a projected budget of N949 billion. The NPC showcased its readiness to adopt advanced technologies like fingerprint, facial recognition, and voice capture to ensure credibility and inclusiveness.

While reaffirming his support for a credible and modern census, President Tinubu emphasized the need to align such a major initiative with Nigeria’s current fiscal conditions—prompting the establishment of the Bagudu-led committee.

The inaugural meeting was attended by senior representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Information, and Budget Planning; the NPC; NIMC; FIRS; and the National Bureau of Statistics, among other key government agencies.
