Israeli Airstrike On Rafah Kills 12 Palestinians, Gaza Medics Say

0

Israeli forces killed at least 12 Palestinians in a dawn airstrike on Rafah in southern Gaza yesterday and fighting raged in several other areas of the coastal enclave, Gaza medics said.

Israel pressed on with its offensive on Rafah a day after saying its forces had taken control of a buffer zone along the nearby border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, giving it effective authority over Gaza’s entire land frontier.

It said the buffer zone’s capture had cut off a route used by the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas to smuggle arms into Gaza during more than seven months of war, which has laid waste to much of the territory and raised fears of famine.

Gaza medical sources said the 12 Palestinians, whom it said were civilians, had been killed and an unspecified number of others wounded in an Israeli airstrike as they tried to recover the body of a civilian in the center of Rafah.

Another Palestinian civilian was killed in an airstrike on Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City in the north of the densely populated enclave, the medics said.

Israel reported clashes in southern, central and northern Gaza but did not immediately comment on the reported deaths in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians took refuge earlier in the war.

Israel has kept up raids on Rafah despite an order by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the top UN court, to halt its attacks. Israeli forces say they are trying to root out Hamas fighters and rescue hostages being held there, and the ICJ also called for the release of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas.

More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s air and land war in Gaza, with 53 of those killed in the past 24 hours, the Hamas-run enclave’s health ministry said.

Israel launched its offensive after Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel on October 7 last year, killed 1,200 people and abducted more than 250, according to Israeli tallies.

The Israeli military said a soldier had been killed in fighting in northern Gaza, bringing to 292 Israel’s combat losses since its first Gaza ground incursion on October 20.

In an overnight call with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant underlined the continuing importance of Israeli operations in the Rafah area “due to concrete information regarding hostages held there.”

“Minister Gallant detailed IDF activities in the Rafah area where 20 terror tunnels have been identified,” the Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement on the overnight call.

The Israeli military also said in a statement that tunnels used by Hamas for smuggling and moving fighters underground had been discovered during the latest raids, as well as large amounts of arms and explosives.

The Israeli statements did not say where the smuggling tunnels ran from. An Israeli official said on May 15 there were 50 tunnels connecting Rafah to the Sinai in Egypt, and voiced concern that Hamas could use them to smuggle senior operatives or hostages into Egyptian territory. Egypt on Wednesday denied the existence of any such tunnels.

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, reiterated its opposition to a major ground offensive in Rafah on Tuesday but said it did not believe such an operation was under way.

The US has, with Egypt and Qatar, been involved in efforts to mediate indirect talks between Israel and Hamas on arranging a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages. Those talks have stalled, with both sides blaming the other for the lack of progress.

As the war drags on, malnutrition has become widespread in Gaza as aid deliveries have slowed to a trickle, and the United Nations has warned of incipient famine.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, also called for an end to what he said were Israeli attacks on UNRWA staff and buildings in Gaza.

In article for the New York Times, he said Israeli officials were “delegitimising UNRWA by effectively characterising it as a terrorist organisation,” and he described a “dangerous precedent of routine targeting of UN staff and premises.”

His comments followed allegations by Israel in January that 12 of UNRWA’s 13,000 staff in Gaza took part in the October 7 attack on Israel. Israel did not immediately respond to his remarks.

The Gaza war has also stoked violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, another territory where Palestinians seek statehood.

Israel said two soldiers were killed in an overnight hit-and-run by a Palestinian motorist in the West Bank city of Nablus. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from Palestinian factions.

FG Targets N2trn Annual Revenue From Blue Economy By 2027

By Yahaya Umar

Federal Government aims to increase revenue generation from the blue economy, targeting an annual revenue of N2 trillion by 2027.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this during a ministerial press briefing on President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s sectoral update on Tuesday.

Oyetola noted that the increased contribution of the marine and blue economy to the country’s Gross Domestic Product ,GDP, is a significant boost for the Ministry’s revenue generation efforts.

“A key measure of success for the Ministry is to increase the contribution of the marine and blue economy to national Gross Domestic Products.

“We are currently implementing a 3-pronged strategy which is expected to double current revenue generation, to achieve N2 trillion per annum by 2027″, he said.

This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s goal to transform Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy by 2026 and a $4 trillion economy by 2035.

The Minister outlined the strategy to achieve the N2 trillion annual revenue target by 2027, focusing on three key areas: addressing revenue leakages, enhancing existing revenue sources, and identifying new blue economy revenue streams.

To address revenue leakages, Oyetola mentioned automating revenue collection to eliminate bottlenecks, enhance transparency, and deploy revenue assurance technologies for accurate billing.

For enhancing existing revenue sources, he discussed commissioning revenue enhancement studies and efficiently utilizing assets through private-sector concessions and public-private partnerships.

To identify new revenue streams, Oyetola highlighted investment promotion campaigns targeting domestic and international investors in the marine and blue economy sectors.

The agencies under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency ,NIMASA, Nigeria Ports Authority ,NPA, Nigerian Shippers’ Council ,NSC, and National Inland Waterways Authority ,NIWA, reported a significant revenue increase in Q1 2024 compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy’s First Year Sector Report released on Tuesday, these agencies witnessed a cumulative 92% increase in revenue in Q1 2024 compared to Q1 2023.

The NPA saw a revenue increase of approximately 105.67%, rising from N82.9 billion in Q1 2023 to N170.5 billion in Q1 2024. NIMASA’s revenue grew from N37.4 billion in Q1 2023 to N62.2 billion in Q1 2024.

The NSC recorded a revenue increase from N4.9 billion in Q1 2023 to N8.7 billion in Q1 2024. NIWA’s revenue rose from N1.1 billion in Q1 2023 to N1.4 billion in Q1 2024.

The combined revenue of these agencies in Q1 2024 amounted to N242.8 billion, up from N126.4 billion in Q1 2023.

Uzoka-Anite disclosed this at the ongoing ministerial sectoral update for the Tinubu led administration on Tuesday.

The Minister also disclosed that the ministry will host the Lagos International Trade Fair which was last hosted 14 years ago in 2010.

“With this massive increase and with the increasing face lift, the ministry will be hosting the Lagos International Trade Fair, we are now set to host a popular Lagos International trade fair. This trade fair was last hosted 14 years ago in 2010 and this trade fair will reestablish our country as a market hub of West Africa”, she said

According to her,  the revival of this trade fair symbolizes the government’s unwavering commitment to reclaiming its position as a regional market powerhouse in West Africa.

Anite added that the resurgence of the Lagos International Trade Fair will not only reestablish Nigeria as a regional market hub but also amplify market linkages for manufacturers, suppliers, farmers, and traders nationwide.

She said the revitalization is poised to catalyze economic activities across various sectors, from tourism to manufacturing, while creating much-needed job opportunities and fortifying food security.

Concurrently, she said transformative reforms at the Nigerian Commodity Exchange aim to unlock equitable opportunities for farmers and miners in national and international markets as fruitful bilateral engagements with countries such as Qatar, the UK, India, and the UAE have further bolstered Nigeria’s market access and trade prospects.

FCCPC: Approved Loan Apps Coys Rise To 284 In May

0

By Dickson Pat

Number of loan app companies approved by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission ,FCCPC, and the Central Bank of Nigeria ,CBN, has increased to 284 as of May 2024.

This was revealed by the FCCPC in its updated list of approved digital lenders. As of March this year, the number of approved companies stood at 266.

The list comprises companies that have been given full approval, conditional approval, and those licensed by the CBN. According to the FCCPC database, a total of 232 companies have been granted full approval to operate as digital lenders in the country while 41 companies have conditional approval.

The FCCPC listed 11 other companies licensed by the CBN to operate loan apps, making a total of 284 approved digital lenders for the Nigerian market.

With the increase in the number of approved digital lenders, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of loan apps offering instant loans to Nigeria. This is because many of the approved digital lenders operate multiple loan apps.

For instance, Acetech Finance Limited, one of the lenders approved by the FCCPC, operates through 8 different loan apps, which include Kashout, Flashcredit, Flashalart, Swiftcredit, Rapidloans, Acecredit, Aceloan, and Rapidalarts.

Similarly, Newedge Finance Limited, which is licensed by the CBN operates through Palm Credit, New Credit, Easybuy, Xcross Cash, and XCash apps.

The latest figures show that the FCCPC has continued to approve more digital lenders even as it struggles to bring the existing players under control.

The multiplicity of the apps being used by digital lenders is cited as one of the reasons the Commission is finding it difficult to curtail the incidences of harassment and defaming of borrowers by digital lenders.

Meanwhile, the FCCPC is now banking on the consumer credit scheme recently introduced by the Federal Government to curb the excesses of loan sharks.

The Acting Executive Vice-Chairman of the FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, on Sunday. Reacting to unethical practices by some digital money lenders, Abdullahi said the scheme would provide Nigerians with access to collateral-free soft loans.

He said the scheme would also help reduce the rate at which Nigerians use unregistered loan applications that tend to harm and shame their character.

“What is happening is because the availability of loans is not there in Nigeria but you can see that this government through its Renewed Hope Agenda came up with a credit scheme.

“It has now gone into effect but it is only for government workers for now, it is going to address the gap that the apps were addressing before.

“So, once we have that kind of possibility in which a person can get a loan from a recognized institution, banks, it will be a soft loan without collateral.

“When that gap is now filled, these people (loan companies) will sit up and do the right thing or they fizzle out of existence”, the FCCPC boss said.

President Bola Tinubu launched the first phase of the consumer credit scheme in April this year with civil servants as the major beneficiaries in this phase.

The scheme is one of the campaign policies of President Tinubu and comes amidst Nigerians borrowing over N740 billion in the first nine months of 2023.

The Nigeria Consumer Credit Corporation ,CREDICORP, has launched a portal for Nigerians to express their interest in obtaining consumer credit.

CREDICORP, a federally-owned entity, aims to increase consumer credit availability to 50% of Nigeria’s working population by 2030.

In the 2024 budget, the Federal Government earmarked N100 billion for the takeoff of the scheme

Pay Benefits Of Sacked 1992-1993 NASS Members, Fasogbon  Urges Tinubu

0

From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks one year in office, a former member of the House of Representatives from Ife Central Federal Constituency (1992-1993), Hon. John Fasogbon yesterday appealed to him to urgently consider the benefits of the affected members of both Red and Green Chambers during this period.

In a statement issued and made available to our Correspondent on Wednesday, he stated that the former lawmakers fought for the democracy which some politicians are enjoying today.

Hon Fasogbon, who strongly appealed to the  Tinubu on the payment of their entitlements  recalled that the president himself was at that period a member of the Senate.

The Ile-Ife born politician lamented that some of the affected politicians now live in abject poverty       due to lack of payment of  their remuneration and severance allowances.

“I want to lay emphasis that President Tinubu needs to review the cases of some of us who were also the victims of democracy.

“MKO and many others have died, while some of us are still alive in abject poverty most especially the likes of the then legislators who were duly elected but sacked without any benefit whatsoever.

“The acceptance of Democracy Day is in recognition of the supreme price that Chief MKO Abiola paid and it has elevated him to the status of an international figure like Martin Luther King, who fought for justice and liberation in the United States of America, USA”.

Hon Fasogbon, however, congratulated President Tinubu on the celebration of his one year in office.

Apex pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, says it now recognises the Minister of Works, David Umahi, as the best-performing Minister in President Bola Tinubu’s Federal Executive Council ,FEC.

According to the organisation, following closely is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ,FCT, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, and Special Adviser to the Presidential on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Ohanaeze hailed the ‘performers’, saying they are the pillars supporting the President Tinubu administration.

A statement by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, yesterday said the first year of the Tinubu administration heralds a period of progress and development for the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

According to Isiguzoro, despite the inherited challenges such as a retrogressive economy, treasury looting, and infrastructural decay, Tinubu has demonstrated the political will to overcome these obstacles more effectively than the previous eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He added that, during the Buhari regime, the South-East zone faced ”deliberate economic suppression and targeting, leading to strife and insecurity.’

”In contrast, President Tinubu’s administration has fostered hope and progress in the South-East through initiatives like the ongoing road reconstruction and rehabilitation projects led by Senator Dave Umahi, fostering economic activity and inclusivity”.

He added, ”Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally declares Senator Dave Umahi as the best-performing minister in the Federal Executive Council due to his diligence, dedication, and innovative ideas that have reshaped the region’s narrative.

”The organisation also commends Minister Nyesom Wike for his visionary leadership; Minister Tunji-Ojo for his reformative efforts, and Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, for his invaluable contribution to promoting President Tinubu’s vision.

”As the administration addresses challenges like insecurity and economic issues in the South-East, Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls on President Tinubu to halt property demolitions in Lagos; release Nnamdi Kanu, enhance trade policies, and reopen the Calabar Seaport to stimulate economic growth further”.

Ohanaeze also advocates the removal of underperforming ministers to drive progress and efficiency.

The organisation affirmed its commitment to partnering with the government, urging opposition leaders to join hands with President Tinubu to rebuild the nation for prosperity and progress.

Yahaya Bello: Don’t Allow Ethnic Jingoists Lead You Astray, Kogi Indigenes Tell EFCC

0

From Our Correspondent

Indigenes of Kogi State have cautioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against those they described as embittered and desperate ethnic jingoists who are strengthening the public opinion that the Commission is collaborating with certain opposition figures to persecute the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

The indigenes said since the allegation of corruption by the EFCC against the former Governor became a national discourse, “some persons who are afraid of chasing their dreams at the polls have hidden under the veneer of activism to sponsor their tribesmen to impugn on the character of ex Governor Yahaya Bello maliciously”.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, chairman of the forum, Benjamin Oguche noted that those still calling for the arrest of Bello even in the face of an ongoing court process, were either uninformed or out to rubbish the image of EFCC while pursuing their prolonged vendetta mission.

The Kogi youth leaders said this particular group had consistently pursued a “we against them” agenda, causing division and hate among the ethnic groups in Kogi,  spreading falsehood and propaganda to the public on the matter.

“It is sad and regrettable that the so-called corruption allegation against Bello, which remains an allegation until established in the court of law, has become an opportunity for chronic political failures to unleash their intolerance and deep-rooted frustration on a state that our founding fathers have laboured so hard to unite.

“Without credible reasons, they have been said to have mobilised resources to fight him for daring to govern a state he hails from and for overseeing a free and fair election which produced another governor, not from their fold,” they stated.

According to them, the polarisation, ethnic and religious colouration that have been introduced in recent times into the EFCC trial of the immediate past Governor calls for worry, especially among every Kogi indigene who has a firm belief in the peaceful co-existence of the state as an indivisible entity.

“Suffice to say that what we see playing out today is a microcosm of what our country represents, where the so called minority is discriminated against, sidelined and treated like a lesser citizen in a country he has made equal, if not greater, contributions to building. The so called minority has been made to believe his voice does not count and his fundamental right to pursue social, economic and political interest taken away.

“Since through divine providence that former Governor Yahaya Bello became governor in 2016, several arrow of ethnic bitterness, needless attacks and corruption profiling have been targetted at him and his government for no offence other than for the simple reason that the responsibility to lead our dear state at that time fell on his shoulder.

“While God saw him through his four years in office, the people of our dear state equally and overwhelmingly renewed their mandate for him, sending him to go again, amidst hate campaign, violence attacks and ethnic war by some ethnic driven elites who have sworn never to allow certain ethnic groups have a taste of leading the state. While this gathering is not about catalogue of exploits he achieved and the records he broke within these eight years, it is important to note that since he left office, same known tribal jingoists and ethnic champions have been having sleepless nights plotting the downfall of the man.

“The anti-Bello protests in the UK last week, Lagos last week and Abuja today highlight the glaring danger those they regard as minority ethnic groups face in the hands of those who feel that their population is for the purpose of suppressing the fundamental rights of others to seek political interest. One continues to wonder where the protesters gathered the money to go on a protest spray, if some people are not bankrolling them, which suggest a sinister plan different from genuine fight against corruption as the public is made to understand.

“We understand that the case for which these hate-induced protests are going on is in the court and the court is a place of orderliness where every party will push their stands without necessarily drawing dagger to murder our peace. We are, however, surprised that dimension of sustained protests have been added to their inglorious mission.

“We have often expressed our confidence in the judiciary and irrespective of how long it could take, the wheel of justice must grind to a logical end. We, however, frown at the seeming open hands the EFCC has been showing to the protesters which is fuelling an unfortunate suspicion that must be immediately corrected.

“While we welcome in its entirety the probe of the former Governor, we, however, reject the deliberate image smearing against him. We call on the EFCC to disregard the propaganda of ethnic agents and face the task of diligent prosecution,” the youth leaders advised.
