Obaseki Attributes Partnership With Security Agencies To Administration’s Successes

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki has attributed the progress witnessed across various sectors of the state’s economy to his administration’s ability to maintain peace, law and order in collaboration with federal security agencies and the state-owned security outfits.

Obaseki stated this while receiving the Chief of Air Staff, CAS, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and other top security officials who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City.

The governor, who restated the need for peace and security, said his government would continue to partner security agencies, support them to effectively deliver on their role of ensuring peace and order, and protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

“The state has witnessed remarkable improvement in the last eight years and the underlying factor is our ability to have law and order in the state. This is as a result of the peaceful collaboration with sister agencies.

“Collaboration between federal security agencies and our own agencies is seamless and responsible for the huge success recorded, as it has helped us to maintain calm and peaceful atmosphere,” the governor said.

He added that available data showed that cultism is the biggest security challenge in the state. Obaseki, however, commended the House of Assembly for coming up with a law prohibiting cultism and a task force to address the menace.

In his response, Air Marshal Abubakar commended Governor Obaseki for his developmental strides across the state, noting that having served in Edo in the past, he is impressed with its transformation.

…as Oborevwori gifts Nigerian Airforce land

By Owen Akenzua, Asaba

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, Wednesday, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the support the Delta State Government has provided to the Air Force over the years and also on the robust execution of his M.O.R.E agenda in the state.

Abubakar who spoke during a courtesy visit to the governor at Government House Asaba, also hailed Governor Oborevwori for gifting the Air Force land land to fully entrench itself in the state.

He spoke as Governor Oborevwori handed over the Certificate of Occupancy of 66.6 hectares of land to the Air Force.

Air Marshal Abubakar who said he was in the state to oversight the operational responsibilities of the Air Force in Warri, said he could not but thank Governor Oborevwori for all the support and cooperation the Air Force had received from Delta State Government over the years.

Air Marshal Abubakar congratulated the Governor on his one year anniversary in office and for the implementation of his administration’s MORE Agenda as a beacon of hope and also a catalyst for the transformation of Delta State.

The Nigerian Air Force Chief also thanked the Governor for the presentation of Certificate of Occupancy, C of O for a parcel of land measuring 66.6 hectares for the Air Force barrack at Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of the state and appealed for more land for the building of the Nigerian Air Force housing scheme in the state.

While welcoming the Air Force Chief to Delta State, Governor Oborevwori said: “to collaborate with the Nigerian Airforce, we have provided 66.6 hectares of land in Osubi, and the C of O was issued in January this year.

“We are all aware that it was initially granted by the previous administration but there was no C of O. It was supposed to be an operational base at that time. We know the project is still there; we will also assist in the construction of roads that will lead to the 66.6 hectares of land.

“The gesture is in line with our M.O.R.E agenda; to enhance peace and security in the state because that’s the only way we can get development. I want to tell you here that but for the sad Okuama 17 very sad incident, we were already enjoying peace in Delta State.

“We condemn the unfortunate incident in totality and we know that the Okuama 17 will not go in vain. We are also doing our best; we have already set up an IDP camp for the innocent citizens.

“I want to assure you that, regarding your request for land for your housing scheme, we will make sure that you get the land as soon as possible. Now that you have the spirit to build a housing scheme for your personnel, we have to get the land ready immediately.

“Again, we assure you that we will continue to partner the Nigerian Airforce and other security agencies in Delta State in order to continue to enjoy peace because that’s the only way sustainable development can be achieved in this state.”

The Zamfara State Police Command has announced the arrest of high-profile persons including a member of the State House of Assembly, and a former local government chairman in connection with banditry in the state.

Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dalijan, disclosed while hosting the officer in charge of the Counterterrorism Unit, under the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Thomas Parker, at the command headquarters in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

However he did not name the high-profile persons arrested in connection with the crime.

CP Dalijan also urged the United Nations, to help establish a forensic laboratory to address the challenge of going to Lagos to conduct forensic analysis.

Dalijan, while hosting Parker, urged the UN to replicate what they did in Maiduguri in Zamfara as he also sought the global body’s assistance for training on investigation, and establishment of forensic laboratories, to accelerate the investigation and prosecution of suspected criminals.

He, however, noted that the crime rates have reduced in Zamfara, due to the ongoing efforts of security agencies in collaboration with Community Protection Guards (CPGs), to flush out the suspected terrorists who migrated from Maiduguri to Zamfara State in Northwest Nigeria.

Reacting, Parker said they were in Zamfara State on the appeal that Governor Dauda Lawal had made to the UN, to assist the state in tackling the insecurity surrounding it.

Parker who visited the police command to gather more information about the existential threats in the state, informed the police of UN’s readiness, to conduct an assessment of the security situation, first to understand the causes and challenges, and how to help deal with the threats.

To that end, the UNDOC team has since embarked on a three-day stakeholders’ engagement in the state, to understand the scope, the widespread challenges, and major drivers of the insecurity confronting the state, and how best it can provide support in addressing the menace.

.urge for restraint on use of military force

By Paul Effiong, Abuja

The House of Representatives has mandated the security agencies to immediately conduct a thorough and wholesome investigation into the circumstances that led to the heartless, gruesome and despicable murder of military personnel while exercising restraint in the application of military force on civilians.

They also mandated its Committees on Defence to interface with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to ensure strict compliance and report to the House within four weeks for more legislative action.

This was sequel to the adoption of motion of urgent national importance brought before the House during plenary yesterday by Hon Makki Abubakar Yalleman.

In his debate for the motion, the lawmaker expressed deep shock and sadness over gruesome murder of some military personnel who were often on peace missions across the country;

The lawmaker further informed that the act of attacking and killing military personnel is often carried out through surprise attacks on military formations including check points as well as those on routine patrols;

He, however, expressed sadness over the recent brutal attack on military personnel at a checkpoint at Obikabia Junction in Aba, Abia state where five soldiers were horrendously murdered by suspected gunmen.

The lawmaker stated that he was specially saddened by the fact that the perpetrators of the act did not only killed the military personnel but also destroyed and burnt down the military vehicles at the checkpoint while some soldier narrowly escaped with gunshot injuries;

According to him, the House is aware that these military personnel were on a peaceful mission in their service to their fatherland to ensuring the security of lives and property in that area of the country.

The lawmaker lamented further that this form of attack and killing of military personnel by gunmen in the South East and other parts of Nigeria has a potential of dampening the morale of armed forces, endangering the lives and property of Nigerians and affecting the war on insecurity which has so far recorded some successes in certain areas.

Consequently, lawmakers expressed worried that such act could lead to retaliatory attack by the military and cause huge collateral damage on the people.

Conclusively, lawmakers observed a minute silence for the murdered military personnel

Uncertainty Hits Wolves’ Bid To Scrap Premier League VAR

0

Premier League clubs are unlikely to vote through Wolves’ proposal to scrap the use of the video assistant referee when member clubs meet at an annual general meeting on Thursday, 6 June, but in-game VAR announcements are set to be introduced.

Wolves formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League in May, which triggered a vote on retaining the use of VAR.

However, while Wolves stand by their decision to raise the issues after a string of decisions went against them last season, it is thought the club have little chance of getting the 14 votes needed for their proposal to be accepted.

According to BBC Sport Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham are among clubs who want to keep VAR, but are demanding that improvements are made.

One other Premier League club has said the VAR system at the moment “isn’t working” and there “clearly are issues” with the system.

While Wolves’ proposal is set for defeat, most clubs believe the current situation needs a major overhaul and Howard Webb, head of refereeing body PGMOL, has said changes to VAR are being looked at.

One expected change is the use of in-game VAR announcements from referees, which the Premier League is likely to trial from next season.

World governing body Fifa introduced the trials at a number of its competitions last year and confirmed this would be extended after positive feedback.

Although the match referee will only be confirming decisions after they have been made and no discussions involving the VAR will be heard, the Premier League view the concept as a step forward.

It is in line with the drive for greater transparency from Webb, who defended the standard of refereeing in April.

The Premier League is confident the introduction of semi-automated offsides at some point in the autumn, after the 2024-25 season has started, will help speed up decisions, although the time taken to award Olympiakos’ winning goal in the Uefa Conference League last week underlined not all decisions are reached quickly with the system.

It is understood Webb and the Premier League would like to go further but are constrained by current regulations set by the game’s lawmaking body, the International Football Association Board.

Malcolm Clarke, chair of the Football Supporters Association, told BBC Sport the majority of their members are now opposed to VAR.

“The support for the introduction of VAR originally has collapsed and 80% of fans now say the experience is poor or very poor, so we cannot go on with this as we are,” he said.

Clarke said there should be a “national debate” on the use of VAR and asked the Premier League to be open to discussion.

“Most of our members think the price of spoiling the match experience is not a price worth paying for a small increase in accurate decisions,” he said.

“It’s good Wolves have tabled this, it has been a catalyst for a real debate and whatever happens it’s essential that debate continues.”

NGO To FG: Declare State Of Emergency On Environment

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

A non-governmental Organization, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) has urged the Federal Government to urgently declare a state of emergency on the environment as it joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Environment Day
(WED).

HOMEF made the call in a statement to commemorate the 2024 World Environment Day in Benin City, Edo State.

A statement signed by, Executive Director, HOMEF, Nnimmo Bassey said the World Environment Day with theme ‘Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought
Resilience’ is dedicated to communities whose lands and livelihoods have been lost to extractivism and pollution.

Bassey said that steps must be taken to halt deforestation, biodiversity erosion and land degradation, adding that without serious climate action humanity will remain on a downward spiral to multiple crises that are
already plaguing the world today.

“As we celebrate World Environment Day, we remind ourselves that our environment has been plagued with destructive activities especially through resource extraction and poor land-use changes.

“Nigeria needs an emergency environmental restoration plan across board as the only way to build resilience and ensure a safe future.

“This is our duty to ourselves and to future generations and immediate steps should be taken by the Nigerian government to ensure the proper clean-up of polluted lands, restoration of same and payment of
compensation for damage suffered.” Bassey said.

Bassey added that: “We must wake up from the futile dream that the earth can be recklessly exploited without dire consequences. We need to understand that the generous gifts of Nature must be handled with gratitude and care.

“We are living witnesses to the crimes committed in mining communities, oil fields and conflict zones. We must protect our biodiversity, reject species-eroding genetic modifications of all sorts, and support
harmonious relationships with Nature.”

He called on governments at all levels to resolve to ensure that communities are fully informed, consulted and their consent received before projects that impact on the
environment are designed or implemented.

He insisted that it must never be taken for granted or, forgotten that these communities continuously tackle the impacts of the multidimensional ecological crisis in their unsupported and vulnerable state and deserve
to be protected.

Adding that, We should transformatively change our policies and choices to live sustainably in harmony with nature, with the complete understanding that the planet is our only home and that her resources are finite.” Bassey said.
