By Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

A non governmental organizations, Nynnah Foundation in collaboration with Webmark Foundation and Destiny Mandate as parts of its efforts to ameliorate the sufferings of the less privileged children in secondary schools has awarded scholarship to not fewer than 30 outstanding students in the secondary school sections of Kabusa Government school in recognition of their hard work and dedication to learning and also donated educational materials to ease their learning.

The president of Nynnah Foundation, Ninnah Samuel said while celebrating the children that every child deserve the right to basic education irrespective of their social backgrounds, adding that education remains a viable tool through which the  future can be shaped.

She however acknowledged the challenging economic situation in the country and emphasised the need for us to support each other, hence distributed essential educational materials to the children. According to her, the foundations distributed 500 pens, 100 pencils, 100 mathematical sets, and 100 packs of exercise books which were handed out to the brightest , punctual and neatest students.

Also speaking, the Chairman Webmark Foundation, Dr. Tunmise Adepoju said, in addition to the gesture, 30 students in the junior secondary whose parents struggled to make ends meet received support as their WAEC examination fees were covered, along with provision for school uniforms, alleviating a significant burden and allowing these students to focus on their studies without financial worries.

“Investing in education is investing in the future. Empowering these young minds today will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow, where these children can grow into empowered individuals capable of driving positive change in their communities and the nation as a whole, so I  encourage well meaning Nigerians to support children education”.

On her part, Madam Useful Nkuma- Abosi of Destiny Mandate advocates deliberate and collective commitment towards harnessing the transformative potential of education of our young ones and called on other corporate organizations, NGOs, individuals to promote the education of our children.

NCC Declares Support For NICO Retreat

0

Barely 72 hours after endorsing shortcodes for cultural contents, the Nigerian Communications Commission has granted the National Institute for Cultural Orientation approval to use the Digital Bridge Institute as a venue for its forthcoming executive cultural orientation retreat.

According to a statement on Sunday, the event is designed to educate public and private sector policymakers on Nigerian culture, customs, and traditions.

NICO revealed that the authorisation to utilise the DBI facility was confirmed during a recent meeting between NICO’s management and the NCC’s executive vice chairman.

According to NICO’s Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the retreat aims to ensure that laws and policies resonate with the cultural identities of the Nigerian people.

“We expect that policymakers from all sectors, including private sector executives, will participate in this orientation. This retreat will provide lawmakers, local government chairmen, state commissioners, special advisers, and private sector leaders the opportunity to understand the customs, traditions, and culture of Nigeria,” Ajiboye explained.

The NICO CEO also noted that the programme would benefit foreign investors and diplomats by familiarising them with local cultural contexts.

He pointed out challenges faced by telecommunications companies, such as resistance to erecting masts and issues with underground cables, as examples of misunderstandings arising from a lack of cultural awareness.

NICO had communicated with the national assembly, urging lawmakers from both chambers to partake in the cultural orientation exercise.

On Friday, the NCC announced its commitment to support cultural re-orientation, mandating telecommunication companies to ensure subscribers have access to content.

The NCC had also considered NICO’s proposal for telecommunication operators to include cultural content on caller tunes, as well as through shortcodes and robocalls for cultural information.

The collaboration between NCC and NICO aims to ensure that cultural content becomes an integral part of Nigeria’s digital landscape, fostering a stronger cultural identity for future generations.

The NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, said there was a need to re-orient Nigerians towards their cultural values, warning that foreign content posed a risk to the country’s cultural heritage if domestic content production did not increase.

“If we don’t produce our own content that will drive home the culture we want to preserve, it is the content we are consuming from outside that will shape our culture. NICO has a much bigger part to play here.

“While we provide the pipe that delivers the content, those producing the content have a major stake in influencing the type of content to be shared,” Maida stated.

He further stressed the need for deliberate steps to address the lack of cultural identity in Nigerian media.

“Today, if you watch Nigerian movies, the accent they speak with as well as their dress do not totally reflect Nigeria; even the topics are not rooted in our culture,” he added.

SERAP Sues Tinubu Over Failure To Account For Ex-President Loans

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has sued the government of President Bola Tinubu “Over the failure to publish spending details of the loans obtained by the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari”.

The suit was filed against the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Debt Management Office, DMO.

In the suit number FHC/L/CS/353/2024 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP is asking the court to “Direct and compel the Tinubu government to publish the loan agreements obtained by the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari”.

SERAP is also praying the court to “Direct and compel the Tinubu government to publish the spending details of any such loans, including the interests and other payments so far made on the loans”.

SERAP, in the suit argued that, “No one should be able to pull curtains of secrecy around decisions on the spending of public funds which can be revealed without injury to the public interest. Democracy requires accountability and accountability requires transparency”.

It also argued that “The Tinubu government should make it possible for citizens to have access to the agreements and spending details to judge whether their government is working for them or not”.

According to SERAP, “The information may help to explain why, despite several billions of dollars in loans obtained by successive governments, millions of Nigerians continue to face extreme poverty and lack access to basic public goods and services”.

It said that Nigerians’ right to democratic governance allows them to appreciably influence the direction of government, and have an opportunity to assess progress and assign blame.

It stated that the accountability of government to the general public is a hallmark of democratic governance, which Nigeria seeks to achieve.

The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare and Andrew Nwankwo, read in part: “Publishing the loan agreements would improve public accountability in ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs”.

SERAP added that Nigerians are entitled to information about what their government is doing in their name, stressing that it is part of their right to information.

“Publishing the agreements and spending details would allow the public to see how and on what these governments spent the loans and foster transparency and accountability.

“Publishing the loan agreements signed by the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, and widely publishing the agreements would allow Nigerians to scrutinise it and to demand accountability for the spending of the loans”, it said

The Nigeria’s Debt Management Office, DMO, however, said that the total public domestic debt portfolio for the country’s is N97.3 trillion ($108 billion).

It said that Nigeria paid $6.2 billion in 2019 as interest on loans, while the country paid $6.5 as interest in 2018. Nigeria also paid $5 billion as interest on loans in 2017, while the country paid $4.4 billion as interest in 2016. For 2015, the interest paid on loans was $5.5 billion.

According to DMO, substantial parts of the loans obtained by successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 may have been mismanaged, diverted or stolen, and in any case, they remain unaccounted for.

No date has yet been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

I’m Not Opposed To LG Autonomy  – Gov Buni

BUNI

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has said that his stance has shown he was not opposed to the idea on local government autonomy across the country.

Buni, disclosed this after casting his vote in the local government election at his polling unit in Buni Gari at the weekend.

He said that his administration’s collaborative approach to local government councils was aimed at complementing their efforts.

“In 2019, I envisioned granting autonomy to local government councils but unfortunately six out of 17 LGs struggled to pay salaries.

“Our joint local government account initiative aims to support the LGs and work together with the state government”, he explained.

The Governor also expressed optimism about the future of local government autonomy in Nigeria.

“Our democracy is growing and this issue will be addressed seamlessly and democratically without hitches”, Buni said.

The Governor commended the impressive turnout of voters at the local government election.

“That is the beauty of democracy; giving people the right to cast their votes and that is what we have just witnessed”, he said.

APC Chieftain Says Gov Agbu Appointed Stooges As Commissioners

From Ben Adaji, Jalingo

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Taraba State Alhaji Aliyu Zubairu has accused the State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas of appointing stooges as Commissioners so that he can have his way unchallenged.

Zubairu, while addressing journalists in Jalingo, yesterday said that the governor is operating the government as a one man business because the commissioners and other appointees lacked the courage to challenge him.

He revealed that most of the commissioners have no knowledge of office procedure and have no idea of what happens under their ministries as the governor takes unilateral decisions without their inputs.

“It is so sad that the Governor deliberately appointed stooges as Commissioners who lack knowledge of the offices they occupy. They don’t raise memos for contracts executed from their offices as the Governor awards contracts without their knowledge and direct contractors to commence work.

“The Governor does not follow due process. Most of the contractors are from Niger Delta while few are the Governor’s relatives from southern Taraba. Governor Agbu is running the State like his personal estate.

“You are journalists and I challenge you to show me one project that the contract process followed due process as spelt out by the Procurement Act. We are in big trouble. The commissioners do not even know what goes on in their ministries and they cannot challenge the governor because they are mostly small boys and lack administrative experience and courage”.

Zubairu, lamented that some of the Commissioners, especially the female ones have turned themselves into the governor’s bag girls following him around Abuja  and overseas.

“My surprise is that some of these female Commissioners are said to be influencing the Governor’s decisions on some sensitive State matters”, he said.

He expressed worry that the Governor Kefas free  Education programs were only on Televisions, Newspapers and Radio, adding that there are several dilapidated schools all over the State that require government attention.

“I challenge you journalists to go to Gassol, Balì, Gashaka and other nearby local government areas here and you will see children learning under trees.  So how can you convince me that you are embarking on free education without addressing these problems”, he questioned.

Efforts by AljazirahNigeria to reach the State Commissioner for Information and Re-orientation, Honourable Zainab Usman Jalingo and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Hon. Emmanuel Bello failed as both of them did not respond calls put across to them

Senator Lalong Warns Against Toxic Politics

0

Former Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong has warned against politics of bitterness and division which is gradually gaining ground in Plateau State and pitching brothers against one another.

Senator Lalong while speaking at the Special Thanksgiving Service by Member Representing Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency Hon. Daniel Asama held at the ECWA Church Tudun Wada Jos, said the level of political bitterness particularly pushed by supporters of various political interests is worrisome and needs to be checked.

He said governance is about the people and so there should be healthy competition that encourages people to work for the interest of the citizens and deliver dividends of democracy.

Lalong cited the recent disinformation and propaganda targeted against him over the recent debate on Ranching held at the Senate where his contributions were mutilated, edited and manipulated to suggest that he is against Ranching.

He described the development as unfortunate reminding the people that he was vilified, maligned and castigated over the efforts to pass a Ranching Bill through the Plateau House of Assembly where the then leadership and members politicised the matter and frustrated its passenger.

The Senator said he was therefore surprised that today, those who stood against Ranching are the ones trying to turn logic on its head by accusing him of being against the idea, a situation he said was pathetic.

He congratulated the celebrant Hon. Asama describing him as a young person with passion and commitment for service having known him for many years since his days as Speaker, Plateau State House of Assembly where he worked with him as confidential secretary.

Lalong urged the Honourable Member to use every opportunity he has to make a mark not only within his Constituency, but in Plateau State and Nigeria at large.

Aso speaking, former Governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye congratulated the celebrant and asked him to always keep in touch with the people on whose behalf he is functioning in Abuja.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang also congratulated Hon. Asama and emphasized the need for people oriented service as a way of building a greater Plateau.

Speaker, House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajjudeen Abbas represented by Hon. Ishaya Lalu congratulated the lawmaker and described him as a very resourceful legislator who has contributed to the business of law making at the green Chambers since he came into office.

ECWA General Secretary Rev. Ayuba Asheshe in a sermon read from 1 Samuel 1 where he stressed that leadership is ordained by God as an act of service and not personal aggrandizement.

While thanking God for the opportunity given him to serve, the celebrant Hon. Asama said he owes all to God and various people who have assisted him in various ways and mentored him in politics over the years.

He specially thanked his constituents for reposing their confidence in him, assuring that he will not let them down, but serve to the best of his ability.

Atiku To Tinubu: Without My Support, Your Political Career Could Have Ended As  Governor

0

By Caleb Ishaya

Former Vice-President and the presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general elections, Atiku Abubakar has said without his support to President Bola Tinubu, his political career could have ended as the governor of Lagos State.

Atiku made this statement while reacting to the widely held position that the PTinubu came to his rescue following his spat with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, leading to his contesting the Presidential Election on the platform of the then Action Congress, AC, in 2007.

In a press statement through his Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, said, “Vice President Kashim Shettima goofed when he claimed that former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar benefited from President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill when he was being “persecuted” in the PDP.

“Truth be told, it was Tinubu that actually benefited immensely from Atiku’s goodwill. But for Atiku’s support, hinged on his pro-democracy instincts and rule of law, Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos would have been rough with a wide possibility of termination of his political career.”

Explaining the true situation of things, the Presidential Candidate said, “For some time, and especially leading up to the 2023 election, there has been a deliberate attempt to distort the history of the politics of the early 4th Republic by ascribing the AC, the political platform that Atiku ran in 2007 as Tinubu’s party.

“Nothing can be further from the truth. Vice President Shettima, obviously carried away with the euphoria of the unveiling of his official residence as Vice President, repeated the same lie.

“Shettima needs to be reminded that Atiku did not run under the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, but Action Congress, AC.

AC came out of a coalition of ACD (Advance Congress of Democrats), formed by mainly PDM members and other associates and Tinubu’s faction of AD.”

He then went further to name the delegates to the primaries of the election that threw up the former Vice President as the party’s presidential candidate to include Atiku Abubakar himself, Lawal Keita, Amb. Yahaya Kwande, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Alexis Anielo, Titi Ajanaku, former Governor Rasheed Ladoja, Chief Tom Ikimi, and Chief Dapo Sarumi.

Others he said were Chief Sergeant Awuse, Alh. Lawan, Dr. Chris Ngige, Prof Ango Abdulahi, Dr Farouk Abdul Azeez, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Chief Ejiofor Onyia, and Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, among others.

He added that from Tinubu’s Alliance for Democracy were Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, and Chief Bisi Akande, among others.

Edo Govt, Oba Bicker Over Ban On Okaigheles

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Edo State government and the Benin Palace have disagreed on the ban placed on Okaigheles (youth leaders) in Edo South communities.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had on Monday, June 3, after a closed-door meeting with security chiefs, announced the ban on Okaigheles over alleged involvement in cult-related activities.

He noted that the decision was part of the renewed efforts to tackle cultism, adding that no fewer than 150 people have been lost to cult-related activities and homicide in the last five months.

But the Benin palace in a statement on Friday, June 7, said the Okaigheles across the seven local government areas had not been banned, noting that they represent a segment of the age-long Benin traditional administrative structure.

According to the statement, the Obazelu of Benin, Chief Osaro Idah made the pronouncement while addressing protesting Edo South Okaigheles who sought the palace’s intervention. Idah assured that “the palace will dialogue with government over the contentious issue”.

But, the state government in a statement at the weekend signed by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, insisted that the ban on Okaigheles remain in force, adding that the decision was taken in the best interest of public safety.

The statement reads: “Edo State government hereby reaffirms its decision to ban the activities of Okaigheles and cultists in Edo South communities due to the alarming rise in cult-related activities and the resulting homicide in the region.

“This decision was made in the interest of public safety and to curb the growing violence that has plagued our communities.

“Edo State Security Council data has shown that these two groups (Okaigheles and cultists) pose the most severe threat to the security and stability of the state, resulting in the decision of the Council to place a total ban on the criminal groups.

“While we respect the tradition and customs of our communities, it is important to note that the safety and security of citizens must always come first. Chief Idah’s contradictory statement does not change the gravity of the situation at hand and we stand by our decision to enforce this ban on Okaigheles to protect the lives of our people.”

It said the state government notes that statements like the one made by Chief Idaho emboldens these criminals to take up arms against ordinary citizens, military, police and other constitutional security agencies.

“For example, on Friday, June 7, some so-called youths opened fire on three men of the Nigerian Army attached to Okomu Oil Palm in Ovia South West Local Government Area, injuring them and throwing the community into pandemonium.”

He said in the coming weeks, government will proceed on a full-scale operation to disarm these criminal elements and neutralise their threat against public peace.

“Government, therefore, warns that it will not allow any individual or organisation no matter now highly placed to undermine the efforts of the State Security Council to protect the lives and property of our people.”

He warned that the activities of cultists, Okaigheles and their sponsors remain banned and we will spare no effort to ensure that those who flout the ban are made to face the full weight of the law.

Vandalising Infrastructure: Impunity Must Stop

0

Increasingly, vandals and arsonists have taken over our landscape with impunity, catching security agencies napping.

Over the years, electricity infrastructure was the worst hit across the country as critical components of the grid and distribution are plundered to the detriment of depleting national resources. It is reported in some instances that some communities remain without electricity for decades following the criminal tendency of a few buoyed by uncommon kleptomania.

In major cities across the country, manholes have been vandalized, leaving citizens to untold hazard even as the open holes have become a leeway for criminals to escape through them as soon as they perpetrate their untoward character.

It is disturbing that even expansion joints on bridges across the country have not been spared by these vandals who have perfected their stock in trade by pillaging essential parts of these infrastructures.

There was a period also that the rail lines was the attraction of these thieves who pull off the iron components of the tracks, thus rendering them unserviceable. Millions of Naira has been lost to these selfish, wicked characters.

Just recently, the 2nd Niger Bridge connecting Onitsha in the South East to Asaba in South South was reportedly vandalized and the extent of damage experts say is colossal even though no figure has been put to it in terms of what it would cost to carry out remediation.

Piqued by the damage, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi lamented the vandalisation of infrastructure on the Bridge, describing it as cruel.

We learnt the social media was awash with video clips of the vandalised part of the bridge.

It was observed that some rail fittings installed on the bridge were uprooted and carted away by the criminals.

Sadly, the nation would have to lose enormous scarce resources to fix these damages each time we experience such vandals at work. It is therefore imperative to gear up surveillance on these critical infrastructures.

These vandals must be checked!

It is disturbing that these vandals are heartless and unperturbed by the consequences that could follow their barbaric acts. These bridges become prone to accidents if they are left bare without the fittings.

Mr Umahi who condemned the vandalisation of the bridge, stressed that the incident amounted to a sabotage of key national infrastructure.

“It is heartrending that the facilities are being vandalised by those who are meant to own the benefits it serves”, he said.

He said a technical team has been directed to inspect, evaluate and reinstate the damaged parts of the bridge.

Mr Umahi appealed to residents of the area and motorists to assist the Ministry by keeping watch over the bridge and reporting vandals to security agencies.

“The Federal Ministry of Works shall promptly and handsomely reward any person or group who nabs or gives useful information on the identity of perpetrators of vandalisation of facilities on the 2nd Niger Bridge or any of our road infrastructure facilities nationwide”, he said.

The Minister vowed that the Federal Government will prosecute anyone caught vandalising the second Niger Bridge and other infrastructure across the country.

The bridge was commissioned on May 23, 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari shortly before leaving office.

The construction of the new bridge began during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan and was abandoned when Buhari took over but  on September 1, 2018, work recommenced in ernest.

The bridge traverses Asaba in Delta State, South-south, Nigeria, to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State, South-east, Nigeria.

We urge the relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of protecting critical national infrastructure to be alert to its duty by looking beyond oil installations but bridges, rail lines, electrical installations among others should form part of its coverage. Therefore, it is only when they are governing these spaces adequately can they be given kudos as living up to their bidding.

It would not be out of place for the communities through which the bridge traverse be engaged in vigilance activities by the security agencies and the Ministry of Works as part of concerted efforts to check the activities of the vandals.

We call for motorized patrols on some of these infrastructures as that would provide a swifter response to these nefarious acts.

Immunisation: Phytomedicine Researcher Advocates Use Of Alternative Medicine

0

As Nigeria battles with immunising more children, Professor Benjamin Amodu has called for the inclusion of alternative and complementary vaccines to reduce the number of children aged 12-23 months who did not receive full or no vaccination at all.

He made this call while speaking with journalists at his Alternative Medicines Hospital in Abuja.

Reacting to a 2021 Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey/National Immunisation Survey Coverage, MICS/NICS, which revealed that among children aged 12–23 months in Nigeria, 17.8 percent did not receive the recommended routine vaccination, with 51.9 percent receiving full immunisation for the basic antigens in urban areas, he said with the inclusion of alternative medicine, this gap would be closed fast.

“We are grateful to the World Health Organisation, WHO, for making it possible for Alternative and Complementary Medicine to grow alongside modern medicine. l say this because with the alternative medicine that I am involved in, most have preventive and curative properties so they can be used as vaccines too.

“Contrary to what some persons are saying that a drug must be in an injection form to be able to serve as a vaccine, vaccines can be in both oral or injectable, and this I have demonstrated recently with our vaccine for HIV which we tested with a renowned University in Nigeria here and it worked successfully. So I will say that if we make use more of our alternative medicine, most of these challenges our under 5 children are  having will be highly reduced,” he said.

Speaking further he added: “and Are you aware that Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate is the 4th highest globally at 576 per 100,000 live births; while approximately 262,000 babies die at birth thereby putting us at second highest globally? While should these lives be allowed to perish when we have the natural solution in abundance?” Amodu asked.

Triune Biblical University’s Professor of Phytomedicine therefore called for an increase in the immunisation rate and immediately close the gap of the little children who die because they have no access to Immunisation.

“What  we are calling for is to  increase our immunisation by alternative medicines on board so that we can save the situation.

Responding to how he sources for the raw materials for his products, he said: “Our food crops, our vegetables are where I get my formulation from because I don’t use any plant or herb that cannot and is not consumed by humans. Most of the people that are on chronic diseases, this is what we’re using to save them.

“So let us let us re-evaluate ourselves. God has given us everything from the garden of Eden so we already have everything. All that is left is the research that is the research and that is where we are now, standing in gap to do the research,” he concluded.

It would be recalled that Professor Amodu, a 1980 Industrial Pharmacy graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, has a cure for malaria evaluated by the WHO in conjunction with the United Nations and found to be very effective in both its vaccine and curative properties with about 97 percent efficacy, beating chloroquine and daraprim.
