One Year After: The Legacy Man And His Strides

0

By Bayo Onanuga

One year after being in the saddle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be the first person to admit that the ride has been bumpy. He is also the first to say he is unfazed by the turbulence as he remains focused on the marathon of the next three years. The past year has been months of baby steps, months of laying the foundations for the next three years of canter.

As Nigeria’s 16th President, Tinubu, during his campaign for the office, said he would make difficult decisions and that running the country would not be business as usual.

From day one, he sought to fulfill his promises, beginning from his earthshaking ‘subsidy is gone’ announcement at the Eagle Square, on the day he was sworn in. The announcement reverberated around the country and beyond. He was not just actualising a promise he made. He was also   affecting the consensus of all the major candidates in the 2023 election that the several decades old, wasteful subsidy must end.

His administration followed this up with the decision to harmonise the foreign exchange rates. The multiple exchange rates executed under his predecessor had given room to various abuses, among which was arbitrage, where people close to the power loop made humongous money, getting forex at the official rate and offloading it at the so-called parallel market for almost 100 percent profit. Both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank advised the Nigerian government to end the policy, to no avail, as forex obligations piled up, FDI’s dried up, and investors shunned Nigeria. Tinubu knew that to reset the economy and build renewed confidence locally and internationally, there must be a policy change. He took the measure, just as he promised during the campaign, with the government announcing that it wanted to harmonise the rates in ‘weeks’. The financial world took notice that Nigeria is at the cusp of great change.

Although, it has taken months to achieve the harmony, with the Naira in the interregnum, taking a massive bashing from the dollar. The heavily hurt currency at a stage fell to about N1,900 to the dollar, with the naysayers and the opposition predicting a total destruction of the currency. Their wish did not come to pass, as the currency rebounded to earn global acclaim as the world’s best performing currency. After weeks of amassing muscle against the US dollar, the Nigerian currency weakened again. Now, the monetary authorities are working hard to ensure the currency did not fall into the abyss like it did in February, before the rebound.

Together with the  abrogation  of the subsidy regime, the forex harmonisation policy triggered an inflationary rage, with food inflation hitting unprecedented levels. Cost of living rose countrywide. Some analysts, however, blamed the inflation on other factors such as insecurity that prevented farmers from going to farm and the poor state of  roads, that escalated transportation costs, pushing up the costs of virtually everything.

The administration responded on many fronts with a raft of ameliorate policies. Last December, it offered subsidised bus transport and free train service to Nigerians going home for Christmas and New Year. The subsidy was also offered for the return journeys. Over 200,000 Nigerians benefited from the bus service.

In agriculture, the government declared a food emergency, launched a massive dry season farming in important crops such as wheat and maize, along with assisting farmers with N100 billion worth of fertilisers. The government released 43,000 metric tonnes of grains  in the reserves and bought another 60,000 metric tonnes of rice from local millers for distribution to the people. States, rich individuals, National Assembly members  joined in distributing food and cash to the vulnerable millions in the country. For months, food inflation resisted all the measures, hitting 33 percent in April. Government also rejected the panicky measure of importing food, reposing confidence in the Nigerian farmers,  that from their yields, Nigeria will overcome its food crisis. In recent weeks, the news from the markets has been that some food prices are going down.

As part of the amelioration measures, the Tinubu administration  announced wage awards of N35,000 to Federal workers to enable them cope with food inflation and transport costs, as it works out a new national minimum wage. It  announced in July last year the Presidential CNG Initiative. Under the programme, that will herald a new industry and new jobs, hundreds of buses and tricycles, which will be powered by Compressed Natural Gas,CNG, will be locally assembled for countrywide rollout. Some of the vehicles will be electric for use in some Nigerian states, where CNG is not readily available. A panel to drive the vision was inaugurated in October 2023. However, bureaucratic delays slowed its procurement work.  A large number of the buses and tricycles will be available  as part of the ceremonies to mark the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

Businesses were not left out of government’s mitigation measures. The Bank of Industry, in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Industry,Trade and Investment, is implementing Presidential Conditional Grant Programme for nano businesses. Disbursement of N50,000 each to the applicants that registered began in April. Beneficiaries included retail marketers, corner shop owners, petty traders, market men and women, food and vegetable vendors, vulcanisers and and shoemakers. Over 1,000,000 nano businesses are targeted. To help big businesses, Government announced an aid package of N1billion each to 75 of them.

The Tinubu government also approved $617 million for up-skilling Nigerian youths, providing startup funding, catalytic infrastructure, and policy advocacy. Youths with digital skills are now registering to benefit from the fund, being administered by the Bank of Industry.

In a country with 200 million people and tax to GDP ratio less than 10%, President Tinubu knew from day one, that it will be difficult to make any great, historic impact, if he fails to tinker with the tax structure and bring more money into the national purse. He announced his plan by setting up the Oyedele Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform, which is winding up its work and has recommended far-reaching reforms in the tax regime. President Tinubu also changed the leadership of the Federal Inland Revenue Service,FIRS, to plug revenue holes and introduce creative ways to increase revenue without necessarily overburdening the people. The result has been astonishing.  Government now takes 50% of the revenue of the MDAs, with record N840 billion recorded in the first quarter. The NNPC was ordered to remit its dollar earnings into CBN.  Revenue inflow generally  is increasing. FIRS is working towards increasing the percentage of tax to GDP to about 20%.

The inflow of money is making the Tinubu administration dream big and plan big. With Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund due for launch, the government is already embarking on legacy projects, such as the  700 kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway, which began in March. Government also plans to reactivate the Sokoto Illela-Badagry Superhighway, which was abandoned in 1976. Many roads and bridges in state of disrepair are to be refurbished. There are plans for rail. Funding for the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna rail is being arranged. Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail will be resuscitated while the Kano-Kastina-Maradi rail line, started by the Buhari administration will be completed with $2billion dollar loan already secured.

Government has not been short about rolling out several policy initiatives, from the issuance of travelling passports, which has been made quicker,  to the planned implementation of some aspects of the Oronsaye report, to cut the costs of governance.

Notably, President Tinubu issued an executive order to enhance investment in the oil and gas sector. The quick fruits of the policy was the opening of three big gas plants in the Niger Delta by the President in recent weeks. Mega investments running into over $15 billion are expected in weeks.

The Tinubu administration has also fulfilled some of the campaign promises with the students loans and Credit Corp ready for take off. To President Tinubu, no Nigerian child should be denied education because the parents could not afford it. He also hopes that the Credit Corp will enhance the purchasing power of workers and boost national commerce.

President Tinubu at various occasions has acknowledged the pains that some of his reforms  are causing the generality of our people. But he  says they are pains we must bear to make progress as a nation.  An ever caring leader, he is always evolving measures to help reduce the pains. Best of all, he listens to the voice of the people and make necessary adjustments.

In one of the most profound analysis of our situation and an endorsement of the reforms being executed by the Tinubu administration, Planning and Budget Minister, Atiku Bagudu said in a recent interview: “We want to be like Asian countries, we want to grow like Brazil but Brazil and those Asian countries that we want, (that) we are competing with, have taken measures that we needed to have taken decades ago.

“The president is even bold to acknowledge that. Let’s do it now. Some of these measures have consequences which we acknowledge. And that’s why again, a number of measures are introduced in order to ameliorate the situation.

“These measures are helpful to Nigeria, irrespective of North or South because they are to restore macroeconomic stability, to restore security in the country and make it better so that investors will feel confident”.

ADC Blames Political Class Over Nation’s Woes

0

By MBACHU GODWIN, Abuja

African Democratic Congress , ADC, has blamed the political class , business class as well as the Nigerian voters as the cause for the nations woes.

It noted that the high level of corruption in the country is been perpetuated by the political class and condoned by the voters who do not hold public office holders to account.

National Chairman of the Party,  Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu stated this yesterday at the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC , meeting in Abuja.

In his speech  titled “Crusade for National Rebirth, Democracy. Let’s Leverage on the Depth of handshake to Lift Nigeria”.

 “The economy is in shambles.

The states and local councils are no different. The governors operate in octopus style, holding onto everything like imperial majesties. The political landscape is depressed

“Let me shock us.

President Tinubu is not to blame entirely, this tragedy has been brewing for many years. He only exacerbates it mindlessly. Tinubu thinks that Machiavellian and John Wayne is a smart way to statecraft. Some of us blame INEC, but I disagree. INEC staff have suffered more fatalities in this democratic dispensation than ever before. In Kano state in 2019, an electoral umpire and the entire family were burnt alive for disagreeing to do the bidding of politicians. The recorded incidents of such deaths. Elected government officials have waylaid INEC officials with thugs and guns. Not many of us stood up for them. The men and ladies of the judiciary, I will also be exempt. Many of them enthusiastically watch us maneuver as mavericks to power and have seen their hopes dashed, because no sooner the Nigerian Politician got to office than the looting began. So who do you trust, when you adjudicate between two thieves? This may appear to be a hash, but could be interrogated.

The business elites and politicians in Nigeria are the culprits; unfortunately, this includes all of us, either by acts of commission or omission.

” The job of rescuing this country has become truly urgent and requires more hands. We have started this move. The process is gathering momentum because our country is in a desperate state.

With a handshake, we can unify Nigeria. With handshake the continent of Africa can become one global force. With handshake we can get the rest of the world to deal with us in a most respectable and collaborative manner.

“The founding of our party was grounded on the brotherhood, sisterhood, and common humanity of all homo sapiens, all inherent in the philosophical grid of handshake. The modern person is wise. The truth is that it depends on how political leaders think and deploy their minds. In ADC, we remain undaunted that with a mindful working of the head and the heart we can solve the majority of our national problems and in fact global problems with handshake. My very dear colleagues of ADC, may I employ us all to embrace the Handshake across Nigeria crusade for our sake and the sake of Nigeria”.

According to him, the government alone cannot provide funding for the various federations to execute their programmes year in year out.

“They will always want to work with people with integrity that can account for the money they give to them. We have corporate bodies that will want to invest in sports.

“They also want to deal with people they can trust”, he said.

Morakinyo urged Federations to make efforts to attract sponsors to execute their programmes aside from the interventions  from the government.

ITTF Ranking: Aruna Reclaims Africa’s Table Tennis Top Spot

Quadri Aruna

Nigeria’s Table Tennis sensation, Quadri Aruna, has reclaimed top spot in Africa ranking, less than two months after surrendering the position.

A statement issued yesterday by the African Table Tennis Federation ,ATTF, saw Aruna moving to 17th position in Week 22 of the 2024 ITTF Ranking.

However, Egypt’s Omar Assar slipped to 22nd in the world ranking after occupying the top spot in Africa in the last two months following his triumph at the last African Games in Ghana.

Aruna, who recently reclaimed the ITTF Africa Cup in Rwanda in May, rose by two steps up the ranking ladder to become the highest rated African in the world.

Assar’s drop in the world ranking, was due to the expiration of the quarter-final points he garnered at the Durban 2023 World Championships in South Africa which automatically made him lose some points that prompted his fall in the ranking.

While others are dropping from the pecking order of ranking, Aruna’s points remain static, as the free-fall of others prompted his rise in the world ranking.

Africa’s biggest movers in May, Mohamed El-Beiali, who became the third-best-ranked player in Africa after finishing as runner-up at the 2024 ITTF Africa Cup after a 4-0 loss to Aruna in Kigali, dropped to 49th in the world rating.

In spite of his one step drop, Egypt’s Dina Meshref held on to the top echelon of Africa as the 24th best player in the world.

Meshref’s compatriot, Hana Goda, remained static as the best rated African in the world, ranking 31st in the world.

The ranking is expected to take effect from June 11, as ITTF concludes the list of participants for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.

NFF, Super Eagles Discredit Online Report Of Unpaid Bonuses And Allowances

0
Super Eagles

Joel Ajayi

Nigeria Football Federation and players of the Super Eagles have lambasted a report in an online publication, which claimed that players of the team have not been paid from monies given by the Presidency to the NFF to offset their bonuses and allowances.

The Presidency had, late last year, and following a process supported and personally followed-through by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, released monies to the NFF for payment of outstanding bonuses and allowances of players and officials of the various National Teams.

However, the said online publication on Monday put together what a senior administrative official of the Super Eagles described as “tissues of lies” and challenged the writer to come forward with evidence of his claims.

“The report is absolutely false, in every ramification, and we challenge the owner of the website and writer to come forward with proof of the claims. We want him to name the players who spoke to him, because these are all tissues of lies.

“Players and officials of the Super Eagles have been paid for all matches played at the AFCON, yet he claimed the team was paid for only three matches. His outlandish claim of the team being owed for 25 matches is the biggest lie ever concocted by any writer.”

The writer also falsely claimed that only members of the NFF Board and staff of the Secretariat have been paid their outstanding allowances from the government money.

“This story is a shame. No player of the Super Eagles spoke to the writer. It is all pure fabrication”, a senior player said.

Another senior official of the Super Eagles added: “The story is absolute bunkum. People should make an effort to verify whatever they hear from anywhere before going to the press. It is clear that this writer did not even hear anything; he simply brought forth something from his own imagination”.

Unhealthy Menstrual Hygiene, Cause Of Infertility

0

There is a reason why sanitary pads come in multiple covers. Using unclean pads can lead to fungal, reproductive tract and urinary infections. It can even make a woman vulnerable to infertility, Blessing Otobong-Gabriel writes.

Good menstrual hygiene plays a fundamental role in enabling women and girls to reach their full potentials.

Menstrual health and hygiene is essential to the well-being and empowerment of women and adolescent girls. On any given day, more than 300 million women worldwide are menstruating.

In total, an estimated 500 million women and girls lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for menstrual management. To effectively manage their menstruation, girls and women require access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, facilities, affordable and appropriate menstrual materials, information on good practices and a supportive environment where they can manage menstruation without embarrassment or stigma.

The negative impact of lack of good menstrual health and hygiene cut across sectors. The World Bank had taken a multi-sectoral and holistic approach to improve menstrual hygiene in its operations across the world.

Secondary infertility refers to couples who are unable to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse after a previous pregnancy.

Globally, approximately, 10-15 percent of couples are infertile.

A number of factors have been identified as causing infertility. The most common causes are Reproductive Tract Infections, RTIs. Upper RTIs in women result in serious consequences such as pelvic inflammatory disease and adhesions, resulting in infertility.

Unhygienic practices during menstruation have been reported including the use of unhygienic materials for the absorption of blood and altered bathing practices. In a study, 26 percent of women reported bathing less frequently and used unhygienic materials to absorb the menstrual flow.

A study reported that only 5.2 percent of females use sanitary pads and 77 percent use old pieces of clothes, while others use a combination of the two.

Another study also showed that 80 percent of females re-use the same cloth for the absorption of blood and 42 percent of them dried the cloth under sun before re-use. The study further reported that, at times, the material was washed in hidden places and not sun-dried.

Clothes dried in hidden places often remain damp, which may give rise to microbial growth and insect larvae, such practices might result in foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

Similarly, unhygienic practices during postpartum might result in RTIs. Various studies reported insertion of herbal medicine inside the vagina or uterus during and washing of the perineum with unsafe material, thereby aiding the transmission of micro-organisms into the upper reproductive tract, leading to pelvic inflammatory diseases, culminating in adhesions and infertility.

According to WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme 2012, menstrual hygiene is when women and adolescent girls use clean items to absorb or collect menstrual blood, which can be changed in privacy as often as necessary, using soap and water to wash the body as required, and having access to safe and convenient facilities to dispose the used items. They understand the basic facts linked to menstrual cycle and how to manage it with dignity and without discomfort or fear.

The challenges that menstruating girls and women face are more than basic lack of supplies or infrastructure. While menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life for most women and girls, in many societies, the experience is constrained by cultural taboos and discriminatory social norms.

The resulting lack of information about menstruation leads to unhygienic and unhealthy menstrual practices and creates misconceptions and negative attitudes, which often leads to shaming, bullying and even gender-based violence. For generations of girls and women, poor menstrual health and hygiene is exacerbating social and economic inequalities, negatively impacting their education, health, safety and human development.

Women suffer due to their ignorance on hygiene during menstruation.

Hygiene‑related practices during menstruation are of considerable importance, as it has a health impact in terms of increased vulnerability to reproductive tract infections.

Menstrual hygiene is an issue that is insufficiently acknowledged and has not received adequate attention over the years.

Lack of menstrual hygiene among adolescents is alarming and there is the need for policies and awareness programmes to be initiated.

It has become a taboo that many women in Nigeria feel uncomfortable discussing it in public.

Naturally, topics that are excluded from public talks are likely to be discarded. This is compounded by gender inequality which excludes women and girls from decision-making processes.

Also in the interplay of socio-economic status, menstrual hygiene practices and RTIs are noticeable. Today, millions of women suffer from RTIs and its complications, and often the infection is transmitted to the offspring of a pregnant mother.

RTIs have become a silent epidemic that devastate women’s lives and are closely interrelated to poor menstrual hygiene.

Similarly, the use of rags and old clothes is a rule rather than exception in rural areas in Nigeria. Unclean rags and old clothes increase the chances of RTIs including urinary, vaginal and perineal infection. Very often, serious infections are left untreated and may sometimes lead to potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome.

Untreated RTIs are responsible for 10-15 percent of fetal wastage and 30-50 percent of prenatal infection. Increasingly, they are also linked with the incidence of cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS, infertility, ectopic pregnancy and a myriad of other symptoms.

Women who have better knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene and safe practices are less vulnerable to RTI and its consequences.

Therefore, increased knowledge about menstruation right from childhood may escalate safe practices and help in mitigating the suffering of millions of women.

The first step is raising awareness, hygiene education and promotion, provision of affordable and accessible products and facilities, and waste management.

According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, menstruation is the process in which the uterus sheds blood and tissue through the vagina. Menarche is the onset of menstruation and is often considered the central event of puberty, which usually starts at between 11 and 14 years.

Although the term relates to a biological occurrence in the body of adolescent girls, its significance as a sign of reproductive potential signifies a transition from girlhood to womanhood.

Consequently, the change frequently necessitates social and psychological adjustment.

Adolescence is the age from 10 to 19 years of one’s life. Adolescent girls often do not receive special puberty education about menstrual health and hygiene because of cultural practices that lead to incorrect and unhealthy behavior, such girls are considered naive in their orientation toward menstrual knowledge and thus are prone to misleading guidance.

Even though menstruation is a normal biological process, sometimes adolescents are unable to manage their menstruation when they are in school. It causes girls to miss classes on average three days every month.

Studies in some countries showed that the magnitude of menstrual management problems is higher in adolescent girls living in rural areas.

CEO of Period Reality, Marlou Cornelissen, while giving an overview of the male and female cycle during a sensitisation event on menstrual hygiene management for secondary school girls and female corps members in Bauchi State, lamented that people assume that only women in rural areas are ignorant of menstrual hygiene.

Cornelissen said “We discovered that even urban dwellers have the same problem. Therefore, there is the need to open discussions on the issue of menstrual hygiene.”
