The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes through sustainable funding and strategic partnerships with the private sector.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of National Sports Commission Hon. Bukola Olopade at Abuja leg of the appreciation tour took place on Wednesday at the Nigerian Tulip International College, with the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, and former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, now Presidential Spokesman, Hon. Sunday Dare, in attendance.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure that both elite and upcoming athletes across the country receive recognition, financial support, and adequate care as they represent Nigeria in various competitions.
According to the commission, the initiative aligns with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to create an enabling environment for sports development and ensure that Nigerian athletes are properly supported to excel on the global stage.
To strengthen funding for athlete welfare, the commission also revealed plans to introduce a policy that will require contractors handling projects for the sports commission to contribute a percentage of their profits to an Athletes Grant Fund. The fund is expected to support athlete development programmes, scholarships, and welfare initiatives.
The NSC explained that the move is aimed at ensuring sustainability in sports financing, especially through collaboration with private sector stakeholders who are encouraged to contribute to the growth of Nigerian sports.
The commission further revealed that funds already raised through private sector support are being used to provide cash rewards and incentives for athletes who continue to bring honour to the country.
The initiative by the NSC forms part of efforts to identify, nurture and support young talents who are expected to represent Nigeria at future international competitions, including the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
The financial rewards were presented during the NSC’s Youth Appreciation Tour and Student-Athletes Recognition Ceremony, organised by Nigerian Tulip International College, Abuja, in partnership with N-Youth Sports Academy.
