Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Ondo State chapter, has decried the worsening insecurity in the state, following the abduction of three nurses from a primary healthcare facility in Akure.
The incident reportedly took place last Saturday at the Comprehensive Health Centre located in Oke Ijebu area, where armed assailants attacked, robbed and took the nurses away.
According to reports, the victims were later abandoned in a bush along Ondo–Akure Expressway after the attackers allegedly withdrew funds from their bank accounts.
They were subsequently rescued by operatives of Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun.
A statement issued by the State NMA Chairman, Dr Alonge Olumuyiwa, on Tuesday, described the incident as disturbing and indicative of growing security challenges that require immediate government intervention.
The association condemned the targeting of health workers, noting that professionals dedicated to saving lives are increasingly exposed to danger.
While expressing relief over the safe return of the victims, NMA warned that such incidents pose serious risks not only to medical personnel, but also to healthcare delivery across communities.
The group pointed to a pattern of rising attacks and kidnappings in parts of the state, including Akoko, Uso, Ilu Abo, and areas along Oda Road in Akure, describing the trend as alarming.
Calling for swift action, the association urged the Ondo State government and security agencies to reinforce protection around health facilities. It also advocated improved funding and support for security outfits such as Amotekun and the police.
Additionally, NMA recommended the creation of a stakeholders committee to design a comprehensive and practical security framework for the state, alongside the release of intervention funds to address vulnerabilities in health institutions, particularly in rural areas.
The association also stressed the importance of engaging health workers on safety concerns to ease anxiety within medical facilities.
Reaffirming its commitment to public health, the NMA cautioned that healthcare professionals cannot continue to operate under unsafe conditions and called on the authorities to act decisively.
