The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of sunshine, cloudy conditions and thunderstorms across different parts of the country from Saturday through Monday.
In its weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, the agency stated that the northern region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds on Saturday.
NiMet said there is a likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall during the morning over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states.
As the day progresses into the afternoon and evening, the agency expects thunderstorms with moderate rainfall to affect parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
For the North Central region, NiMet forecast thunderstorms with moderate rainfall during the morning in parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.
The agency added, “By afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa States and the Federal Capital Territory.”
In the southern region, moderate rainfall is expected during the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa states.
The agency said rainfall is likely to spread across the entire southern region later in the day.
For Sunday, NiMet predicted that parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states in the northern region could experience morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall.
It also forecast thunderstorms with moderate rainfall later in the day over parts of Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa states.
Across the North Central region, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in the morning over parts of Niger, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory.
The agency said the rainfall is expected to extend across the region during the afternoon and evening.
For southern Nigeria, NiMet forecast light rainfall during the morning over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers states.
It added that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected across the southern region later in the day.
Looking ahead to Monday, the agency predicted partly cloudy conditions across the northern states, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall likely over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe states.
Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected to become more widespread across the northern region later in the afternoon and evening.
For the North Central region, NiMet forecast sunny conditions with patches of clouds during the morning before thunderstorms with moderate rainfall develop across the region later in the day.
The agency also stated, “For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected over the region with prospects of light rains over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States during the morning hours.”
It added that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected across the southern region later in the day.
NiMet advised residents to take necessary precautions as strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas.
The agency warned that persistent rainfall along the coastal states could increase the risk of flash flooding and urged residents to avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.
It also cautioned motorists against driving during heavy downpours and advised people to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
In addition, the agency urged residents to stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injuries from falling branches or uprooted trees during strong winds.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to support safe flight planning and encouraged the public to remain updated through its official weather forecasts.
