The Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation (NSF) has kicked off a new era of reform and transparency following its inaugural board meeting in Abuja, where far-reaching decisions were made to reposition the sport for greater efficiency, professionalism, and global competitiveness.
The meeting, chaired by NSF President Commodore Mohammed Shettima, had in attendance First Vice President Commodore Rahinatu Garba, Second Vice President Abubakar Sadiq, North West Representative H. Abubakar, sponsor Prince Supo Olowu, Institutional Representative Sheed Yusuf, and the Federation’s Secretary-General, Mrs. Oyindolapo Tinuoso. Other board members joined the deliberations virtually.
At the session, the board approved key reform measures, including the conduct of a forensic audit, a comprehensive review of the federation’s constitution, and a formal handover from the former President Navy Captain Bamidele Olatunji Ayoade to ensure a smooth transition.
Commodore Shettima described these steps as essential to promoting transparency, accountability, and effective governance in line with international best practices.
“The forensic audit will give us a clear picture of the federation’s financial state — its transactions, assets, and liabilities — and help us address any irregularities inherited from previous administrations,” he stated.
He further emphasized the urgent need for a constitution review to modernize the federation’s operational framework and strengthen athlete welfare and administrative efficiency.
“A constitution review is long overdue,” a board member added. “We must set clear standards for accountability and professionalism if we want the Federation to thrive sustainably.”
The board also directed the immediate handover of all official documents, equipment, and assets from the former leadership to the new administration, stressing that continuity and order are vital for progress.
Reaffirming its commitment to rebuilding the sport, the NSF pledged to revitalize shooting activities nationwide, promote grassroots participation, and enhance Nigeria’s visibility in continental and global championships.
“Our focus is on rebuilding trust and setting a new tone for integrity and performance,” Shettima affirmed. “We are determined to move forward with accountability and collective responsibility.”
He also disclosed that discussions during the meeting touched on the proper management of sensitive sporting equipment, especially firearms, stressing the need for strict compliance with safety and security standards.
As part of its immediate agenda, the NSF will commence the forensic audit and inaugurate a Constitutional Review Committee to align its governance with the evolving structure of sports administration in Nigeria now under the National Sports Commission.
“With unity, transparency, and hard work, we will strengthen the Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation and restore it to a position of pride nationally and internationally,” Shettima concluded.
