The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, AIG Dankombo Morris, to Plateau State following the recent attack on the Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area.
The deployment is part of efforts to assess the security situation firsthand and implement measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing further attacks in the area.
The Inspector-General also approved the deployment of additional police personnel and operational assets, including operatives of the Police Mobile Force and other tactical units, to strengthen security presence in the affected communities.
During a visit to Bokkos on Tuesday, AIG Morris, accompanied by members of the Plateau State Police Command Management Team, held engagements with local government officials, traditional rulers and other key stakeholders.
Speaking during the meeting, Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, commended the Inspector-General for the swift intervention and described the attack as a tragic and unprovoked act of criminality.
He disclosed that victims of the incident had been buried and appealed for sustained deployment of security personnel and operational resources to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
Also speaking, the President of the Women in Politics Initiative, Plateau State chapter, Mrs Hajara Yunana, expressed concern over the impact of the attack on women and families in the community.
She urged the police to ensure that assurances given to residents are backed by concrete action and called for the deployment of modern policing technology to improve security in vulnerable areas.
Yunana also appealed to residents, particularly women, to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with credible information that could aid security operations.
Addressing stakeholders, AIG Morris conveyed the condolences of the Inspector-General to the Plateau State Government and the people of Bokkos, especially members of the affected Kawel community.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, the AIG condemned the attack, describing it as cruel and inhumane.
He assured residents that security agencies would intensify efforts to track down those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
Morris explained that the deployment of additional personnel and tactical assets was aimed at restoring public confidence, safeguarding vulnerable communities and preventing a recurrence of such attacks.
He further urged community leaders, youth groups and residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information that would support ongoing security operations.
The AIG assured residents that the security situation had been brought under control and encouraged them to continue with their lawful activities while remaining vigilant and security-conscious.
