FROM SAMSON ALFA, MINNA
First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has donated N1 billion and food items to the Niger State government to cushion the suffering of victims of flooding.
Mrs Tinubu also donated relief materials which include 2,000 bags of 50kg rice, clothes and shoes to the state government for the victims of flood, banditry, boat mishap and fire disasters.
Delivering the items yesterday at the Government House, Minna, the first lady stated that the funds should be directed towards housing support and essential supplies to help displaced families have a better life.
She also condoled the government and people of Niger State over the flood disaster in Mokwa that claimed many lives and displaced many families, the recent boat mishaps and victims of bandit attacks and those who have suffered fire disaster in recent times.
The president’s wife had earlier lauded President Bola Tinubu for the swift release of funds and food items to assist in the recovery effort, as well as the reconstruction of houses destroyed by flood in Mokwa.
She also appreciated Governor Muhammad Bago for rising promptly to the occasion by donating funds and grains to support families that were displaced.
Responding, Governor Bago stated that there was no better time to visit the state by the first lady than now, stressing that Niger is the only riverine state in Northern Nigeria and had tributaries of water housing four hydro dams and two water falls.
He added that the state was awash with a lot of flood, but that government only provides mitigation and advocacy.
Bago also explained that the state had experienced incidents of flood, boat mishaps, fire disasters, banditry and insurgency, and appreciated the first lady for her kind gesture to the victims of the disasters.
