Federal Ministry of Works has commenced a zonal training programme for engineers, technologists, and technicians, starting with the North Central zone.
The three-day intensive training began on Tuesday at the Pavement Evaluation Unit in Sheda, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.
It focused on key areas including highway and bridge design, project and contract management, and quality assurance.
Speaking at the opening session, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Olufunsho Adebiyi said the programme, which was approved by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi and the Minister of State, Hon. Bello Goronyo, aim to close critical capacity gaps caused by the retirement of senior engineers and anticipated exits later this year.
Adebiyi said there is a need to rotate engineers across regions to deepen field experience and technical versatility.
He revealed that a personnel audit had been submitted to the Office of the Head of Civil Service to address recruitment gaps, while urging young professionals to pursue self-development and embrace performance-driven growth.
The Permanent Secretary challenged engineers to uphold excellence and ethical standards.
“Let this engagement reset our priorities and rekindle our pride as engineers. We must rise above complacency, and we must deliver”, he charged.
The sessions featured expert-led lectures, including “Effective Supervision of Federal Highway Projects” by Engr. Olufemi Oyekanmi, who advocated for increased manpower and discipline in field operations.
Also, Engr. C. Shausu’s lecture on communication skills and Engr. A.A. Adebiyi’s session on project site safety rounded out the agenda.
Director of Highways Planning and Development, Engr. David Yiltong Dechi described the training as a strong commitment to raising professional standards within the Ministry.
