Edo State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, has commissioned the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Centre in Uromi.
During the commissioning, Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs Edesili Anani noted the opportunities in partnering organisations to bring the project to fruition.
She noted that the centre stands as a beacon of hope for survivors and reflects government’s strong commitment to protect and support vulnerable individuals.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Eugenia Abdallah, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Joy Ihensekhien, stated that the event marked a significant milestone in the collective efforts to protect, support and empower survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Edo State.
She noted that the establishment of the centre reflects the unwavering commitment of the state government in partnership with collaborators to provide timely, survivor-centred and confidential services to those affected by sexual violence and other related cases.
The commissioner emphasized that SARC will provide comprehensive services including medical care, psychosocial support, legal guidance, investigations and referrals, ensuring that survivors are not left to walk their journey alone.
Mrs Abdallah added that the commissioning of Uromi SARC is a reaffirmation of the state’s resolve to strengthen response mechanisms, expand safe spaces and build a society where every woman, man, girl and boy can live free from fear, violence and discrimination.
Representatives of IOM, Switzerland Embassy, Esan North-East chairman and the commissioner of police pledged continued collaboration to ensure that survivors of SGBV receive protection, care and justice, and also strengthen the fight against human trafficking.
