Argentina Exits WHO, Following US Withdrawal Over Policy Disputes

Argentina has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced Tuesday, completing a process initiated a year ago by President Javier Milei’s government.

The decision follows similar action by the United States, which left the UN health agency in January under President Donald Trump.

Quirno said Argentina would continue promoting health cooperation through bilateral agreements and regional forums while preserving full sovereignty over its health policies.

“Argentina will continue to promote international cooperation in health through bilateral agreements and regional forums, while fully preserving its sovereignty and its capacity to make decisions regarding health policies,” he wrote on X.

Milei’s administration had criticised WHO’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, declaring last year that its recommendations were “ineffective because they are not based on science, but on political interests.”

The withdrawal aligns Argentina closely with Trump, whom Milei has openly admired and emulated on several policy fronts.
