The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has refuted insinuations of a supremacy battle between him and other prominent Yoruba monarchs, particularly the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
The clarification followed recent speculations of tension after the Ooni conferred the title of “Okanlomo of Oduwa” on Ibadan businessman and philanthropist, Dotun Sanusi, during the unveiling of an indigenous social media platform, 2geda, held at Ilaji Hotel, Ibadan.
In a statement released on Thursday in Ibadan by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin stressed that his reign is not defined by rivalry but by service to his people.
“The Alaafin does not need to engage in any battle for supremacy with any Oba, whether in Yorubaland or elsewhere,” the statement read. “He is a steadfast custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, always mindful of the safety and welfare of his subjects.”
The monarch emphasized that his administration is guided by the results it brings to the people of Oyo and the wider Yoruba race, noting that he is committed to ensuring development, peace, and cultural preservation.
According to the statement, Oba Owoade views the throne of Alaafin as an enduring institution of heritage, anchored on unity and prosperity, rather than competition with fellow monarchs.
The Alaafin reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Yoruba cultural values and fostering harmony among traditional institutions, stressing that his priority remains “the welfare, culture, and development” of his people.
