Benue State governor, Hyacinth Alia, yesterday, led his Deputy, Sam Ode, members of the State Executive Council, state Assembly, top judicial officials, service chiefs and others to honour the nation’s fallen and living heroes.
As part of activities marking this year’s Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, they joined heads of military formations in the state to perform the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier.
First to lay the wreath was Governor Alia, followed by his deputy, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alfred Emberga.
The wreath was also laid by the Tor-Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, the Och’Idoma, Dr Elaigwu Odogbo, as well as members of the Nigerian Legion.
Speaking with journalists yesterday after the ceremony, Governor Alia emphasised the need for Nigerians to remain united, stressing that this would serve as a mark of honour to members of the armed forces who had paid the ultimate price by giving up their lives in the defense of the territorial integrity of the nation.
He noted with satisfaction, the contributions of men and officers of the armed forces towards protecting lives and property, calling for support for the families that the fallen heroes left behind.
The governor, who paid tribute to the fallen heroes, expressed appreciation to the armed forces for ensuring that the country remains one indivisible entity.
