President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has announced a donation of N50 million to support five families affected by the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Akpabio made the announcement during Wednesday’s plenary, explaining that the financial assistance was intended to provide relief to the families who lost loved ones during the tragic incident.

According to the Senate President, the donation will be shared equally among the five affected families, with N10 million allocated to each family.

The beneficiaries include the families of three security personnel who lost their lives while participating in the rescue operation, as well as the families of two teachers who were killed during the incident.

Akpabio said the intervention forms part of the Senate’s efforts to support those directly affected by the tragedy while demonstrating solidarity with grieving families.

The donation also reflects the National Assembly’s concern over the growing security challenges facing communities across the country.

During the plenary, lawmakers renewed calls for stronger collaboration among security agencies to improve rescue efforts and secure the release of victims still being held by kidnappers in different parts of Nigeria.

The Senate also stressed the need for sustained support for families who have suffered losses as a result of criminal attacks.

However, during the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi raised a point of order, urging the Senate to ensure that assistance provided to victims of violent attacks is not limited to a select group of people.

Ningi argued that compensation and relief measures should be extended to all citizens affected by similar incidents, regardless of their occupation or status.

According to him, the government must avoid any perception of discrimination in providing support to victims of insecurity.

He maintained that every Nigerian who suffers personal loss due to attacks by criminals deserves equal attention and consideration from the government.

The senator called for a more comprehensive and inclusive compensation framework capable of addressing the needs of all affected victims and their families.

He said the Senate should adopt a holistic approach to post-incident support to ensure fairness and equity.

Ningi further emphasised that such interventions would demonstrate that every Nigerian life carries equal value and deserves equal protection and support.

The lawmakers agreed that improving security across the country remains critical to preventing similar tragedies and reducing the devastating impact of kidnapping and violent crimes on families and communities.
