Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has announced that a special prayer and remembrance programme will be held to commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
The remembrance event is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 13, and will bring together family members, close associates, former aides, political allies and supporters to reflect on the life and legacy of the late statesman.
Making the announcement through a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, Ahmad said the gathering would serve as an opportunity to honour Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria and pray for the repose of his soul.
“On Monday, July 13th, we will gather in solemn remembrance to honour the life, legacy and enduring service of our late boss, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, one year after his passing,” Ahmad stated.
He described the late president as a leader who devoted his life to public service with unwavering dedication, discipline and patriotism.
According to him, Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development and governance remain an important part of the nation’s history and will continue to be remembered.
Ahmad noted that the remembrance would not only celebrate Buhari’s achievements but also provide an opportunity for prayers seeking divine mercy for the late president.
He said participants would pray for Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and continue to comfort his family, friends and Nigerians who still mourn his passing.
“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” Ahmad concluded.
Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a clinic in London after battling a prolonged illness.
Following his death, his remains were flown back to Nigeria, where he received a state burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in the presence of family members, political leaders, traditional rulers and dignitaries.
The late president first served Nigeria as a military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 before returning decades later as a democratically elected president.
He made history in 2015 by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria’s democratic era after winning the presidential election.
Buhari was subsequently re-elected for a second four-year term in 2019 and completed his tenure on May 29, 2023, before handing over power.
His administration focused on anti-corruption reforms, infrastructure development, security challenges and economic diversification, though it also faced criticism over issues relating to insecurity, inflation and economic hardship.
The planned remembrance programme is expected to provide an avenue for those who worked closely with Buhari, as well as admirers across the country, to reflect on his leadership journey, public service and lasting impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.
