Gunmen have killed two residents, including an 82-year-old man, during separate attacks on communities in Irigwe Chiefdom, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were identified as 82-year-old Demi Duda and 19-year-old Emmanuel Chinge.

Another resident reportedly sustained injuries during the attacks and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed health facility.

The Irigwe Youth Movement (IYM) disclosed the incidents in a statement issued on Monday, alleging that the attacks were carried out by armed men within a 24-hour period.

The statement, signed by the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, said the first attack occurred on Sunday at Nche-tahu in Nkien-whie District of Irigwe Chiefdom, where Emmanuel Chinge was killed.

According to the group, the second incident happened in the early hours of Monday between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. in Kurudu, Jebbu Miango, where the elderly Demi Duda lost his life.

The movement added that another resident sustained injuries during the attack and is currently undergoing treatment.

The youth organisation expressed concern over what it described as the worsening security situation across Irigwe land, alleging that repeated attacks by gunmen continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.

It also claimed that persistent attacks on farming communities have led to the destruction of farmlands, worsening economic hardship for residents.

The group appealed for prayers and support for communities in Irigwe Chiefdom and other parts of Plateau State affected by recurring insecurity.

As of the time of filing this report, attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful.

Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, for comments on the incidents did not yield any response.
