Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Ojukwu

The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian citizens who were detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over allegations of economic-related offences.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the development on Friday in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, four of the detained Nigerians were released on Monday, June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom on Tuesday, June 23, following months of diplomatic engagements.

The ministry said the successful resolution of the matter was the result of sustained diplomatic and consular efforts by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, which maintained continuous engagement with the Ivorian authorities throughout the period of detention.

It commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa, and the staff of the Nigerian mission for their dedication and professionalism in securing the release of the citizens.

“The Ministry commends the Ambassador of Nigeria to Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, and the entire staff of the Embassy for their steadfast commitment, professionalism and tireless diplomatic efforts which culminated in the successful resolution of the matter.

“The Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detained Nigerians, ensured their welfare throughout their detention, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and other relevant institutions to secure their release,” the statement said.

The ministry also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation and willingness to work with Nigerian authorities, describing the outcome as another reflection of the strong diplomatic relationship between both countries.

It noted that the cordial ties shared by Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire contributed significantly to the successful conclusion of the case.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to Nigerians living abroad, the ministry said the protection of citizens remains one of the core priorities of Nigeria’s foreign policy.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to the protection of the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad. Through its diplomatic missions worldwide, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to provide consular assistance and engage host governments through established diplomatic channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerians wherever they may reside.

“The Ministry wishes to reassure Nigerian nationals overseas that the welfare and protection of citizens remain a cardinal priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy,” the statement added.

The ministry further advised Nigerians travelling or residing outside the country to obey the laws of their host nations and maintain regular contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate whenever assistance is required.

It stressed that adherence to local laws and timely engagement with Nigerian diplomatic missions would help facilitate prompt consular support whenever challenges arise.

The release of the six Nigerians marks the end of months of diplomatic negotiations and reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad through peaceful diplomatic channels.
