South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has taken aim at his team’s critics after Bafana Bafana secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.
South Africa sealed qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea on Wednesday, finishing second in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico, who won all three of their group matches.
The result marks a significant milestone for Bafana Bafana, who are competing in the World Cup for the fourth time and making their first appearance at the tournament since hosting it in 2010.
Many observers had written off South Africa’s chances following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening group match. However, the team recovered with a crucial draw against the Czech Republic before defeating South Korea in what proved to be a decisive battle for qualification.
Thapelo Maseko scored the winning goal in the second half to send South Africa into the knockout rounds and spark celebrations among players and supporters.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Broos said the victory served as a response to critics who doubted the team’s ability.
“I’m very proud of the performance of my team and I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths of the last weeks that thought that we had to change something,” Broos said.
“We just did what we did. We just did what I wanted to do and this is the result.”
The 74-year-old Belgian coach, who has led South Africa since 2021, described the achievement as one of the most memorable moments of his long coaching career.
“I said it already in the past that probably it will be one of the last games of my career and when you can end a career like I had in this way, I think everybody or every coach dreams of it,” he said.
Broos also highlighted the strong relationship he enjoys with his players, suggesting it has been a key factor behind the team’s success.
“Between me as a coach and them as players is yes, maybe something unique — I’m the coach, but I’m not a coach,” he explained.
“I think I’m a friend of theirs. So the relationship between the players and me, this is very good.”
The South African coach said he never lost faith in his squad despite the criticism that followed their opening defeat and praised the players for their determination to prove themselves on the world stage.
South Africa will now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
Broos believes his players remain motivated to achieve another historic milestone.
“I just know that the players will be ready again and try to achieve the third round,” he said.
“It should be even more historic. But those players are chasing those things. Those players want to prove to everyone and to show that they are a good team. So we will see next Sunday if we can go further.”
The victory over South Korea has already secured South Africa’s place in the history books, but Bafana Bafana now have an opportunity to continue their remarkable World Cup journey when they take on Canada in the knockout stage.
