The Nigerian Navy has recorded another success in its crackdown on illegal exploitation of natural resources following the interception of two wooden boats carrying suspected illegally mined black sand and the arrest of 13 suspects in Bayelsa State.

The development was disclosed by Abiodun Folorunsho, who said the operation was conducted by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso after receiving credible intelligence about boats allegedly involved in illegal mining activities in coastal communities within Brass Local Government Area.

According to Folorunsho, naval operatives acted swiftly on the intelligence and intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities, where large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand were discovered onboard.

“A total of 13 crew members were arrested in connection with the activity,” he said.

The Navy noted that the operation reflects its determination to protect Nigeria’s maritime environment and prevent the unlawful exploitation of natural resources, which can have serious economic and environmental consequences.

“The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in sustaining operations against illegal resource extraction and other maritime crimes while maintaining security and stability within the nation’s waterways,” Folorunsho stated.

He explained that, in line with established procedures and directives of the Bayelsa State Government, the two seized wooden boats, the recovered black sand and the 13 suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of the Nembe Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Navy also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to protect the country’s maritime resources and ensure that waterways remain safe for lawful economic activities.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy to combat illegal mining, maritime crimes and other activities that threaten the sustainable management of Nigeria’s natural resources.
