The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three residents following an attack by suspected bandits on Pissa village in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday morning, has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges confronting communities in parts of northern Nigeria.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the assailants invaded the village at about 9:00 a.m., unleashing violence on residents and causing significant damage to property.

According to Abiodun, preliminary reports indicate that three persons lost their lives during the assault, while several houses were set on fire by the attackers.

“The report received indicated that suspected bandits invaded Pissa village in Borgu LGA,” he stated.

“Three people were reportedly killed during the attack, and some houses were set ablaze.”

The police spokesperson disclosed that military personnel responded to the distress call and moved swiftly to confront the attackers.

He explained that troops engaged the suspected terrorists in a gun battle shortly after the attack commenced, although complete details of the encounter were not immediately available.

“However, the military responded and engaged the terrorists, but further details are still sketchy,” Abiodun added.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released information regarding possible casualties among the attackers or whether any arrests had been made following the military intervention.

Residents of the affected community were said to have fled their homes during the attack, while local authorities continued to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the assailants.

The incident has renewed concerns over the activities of armed criminal groups operating in parts of Niger State and neighbouring areas, where attacks on rural communities, kidnappings, and destruction of property have remained recurring security challenges.

Borgu Local Government Area, which shares boundaries with other states and forested regions, has in recent years experienced security threats linked to armed banditry and other criminal activities.

Security agencies have repeatedly intensified operations aimed at curbing the activities of criminal elements across the state, while residents continue to call for stronger protection and sustained security presence in vulnerable communities.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue and more information emerges regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack and the military response.
