The Kogi State Government has confirmed that security operatives successfully thwarted a suspected terrorist attack in Ikoyi, located in Ijumu Local Government Area, averting what officials described as a potentially serious security incident.
According to a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, the incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The government explained that the attack happened during a social gathering involving members of the Tiv community, which allegedly contravened an existing state security directive prohibiting public gatherings beyond 4:00 p.m.
Fanwo stated that armed criminal elements reportedly exploited the gathering and launched an assault with the suspected objective of kidnapping participants and creating widespread fear within the area.
He noted that security agencies responded almost immediately after receiving reports of the attack. Personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, operatives of the Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters reportedly arrived at the scene within five minutes.
The swift deployment of security forces resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the attackers. Authorities said the rapid intervention disrupted the operation of the suspected bandits and prevented them from carrying out any abductions.
According to the government, the attackers were unable to execute their plans and were forced to retreat into nearby forested areas following sustained resistance from the combined security team.
Despite the successful operation, one member of the Tiv community was reportedly killed during the confrontation. Another individual sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The government disclosed that intelligence reports indicated several of the fleeing attackers may have suffered gunshot wounds during the encounter. Security agencies have since commenced a manhunt to track down and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Fanwo urged residents to support security efforts by reporting any person found with suspicious gunshot wounds or anyone seeking treatment for firearm-related injuries at hospitals, clinics, or other medical facilities.
The commissioner said the incident demonstrated the effectiveness of Kogi State’s security framework, particularly the close collaboration among conventional security agencies, local vigilante groups, and community-based hunters.
He emphasized that the less-than-five-minute response time by security personnel played a decisive role in preventing what could have escalated into a large-scale security crisis involving mass abductions and loss of lives.
The statement further highlighted the role of the Kogi State Vigilante Service, noting that its recent integration into the mainstream civil service and the provision of pensionable appointments under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration have significantly enhanced its operational efficiency.
According to the government, the improved welfare structure has strengthened intelligence gathering, community engagement, and rapid-response capabilities across the state.
The Hunters Group was also praised for its contribution to grassroots security operations. Authorities said the group continues to serve as an important support mechanism for conventional security agencies, helping to safeguard rural communities and vulnerable locations.
The state government commended all personnel involved in the operation for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to duty. Officials described their actions as a clear demonstration of the readiness of Kogi’s security apparatus to confront criminal threats and protect residents.
The government also reiterated the need for citizens to comply with security directives, particularly restrictions on unauthorized gatherings and activities in areas considered vulnerable to criminal attacks.
Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of existing measures aimed at protecting communities and preventing future incidents.
The Kogi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout the state and pledged continued support for all security agencies operating within its borders.
Residents were encouraged to remain alert, cooperate with law enforcement authorities, and provide credible intelligence that could assist in preventing criminal activities and improving public safety.
