Chairman of the Standards Council of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, Yahuza Ado Inuwa, has called for stronger investment in accurate measurement systems and quality infrastructure as Nigeria pursues sustainable economic development, industrialisation, and global trade competitiveness.

Speaking at the 2026 World Metrology Day celebration, Inuwa said metrology, the science of measurement, plays a critical role in building trust in governance, economic planning, and industrial production.

According to him, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” highlights the importance of reliable measurements in shaping effective public policies and delivering measurable outcomes across sectors.

“In every modern economy, decisions are only as reliable as the data and measurements upon which they are based,” he said. “Accurate measurements create confidence in systems, institutions, products, and services.”

Inuwa noted that Nigeria’s ambition for industrial growth, economic diversification, and deeper participation in regional and international trade requires greater emphasis on precision, traceability, and compliance with internationally accepted standards.

He said the Standards Council remains committed to supporting SON in strengthening Nigeria’s national quality infrastructure through policy direction, stakeholder engagement, and institutional support.

“The Council under my leadership remains ready to work closely with the management of SON in promoting policies and initiatives that will advance standardisation, improve quality infrastructure, support industrial growth, and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian products and services,” he said.

The SON Council chairman stressed that the agency’s activities in calibration, testing, conformity assessment, standards development, and quality assurance remain essential to improving industrial efficiency, reducing technical barriers to trade, and protecting consumers.

He also pledged continued support for investments in technical infrastructure, laboratory development, and human capacity building to ensure Nigeria’s quality ecosystem remains globally competitive.

Inuwa commended the Director General/Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, as well as the management and staff of the organisation for their commitment to advancing the Federal Government’s industrial transformation agenda.

He further called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, academia, and development partners to deepen the culture of quality and standards across the country.

“Together, we can build systems that inspire confidence, support innovation, enhance productivity, and position Nigeria for sustainable economic growth,” he said.
