Alia Swears In New Judge, Pledges Support for Judicial Independence

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Benue State governor, Hyacinth Alia has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to judicial independence, integrity and accountability.

The governor stated this Monday while swearing in Mrs Franca Yuwa as a Judge of the Benue State High Court at the Government House, Makurdi.

He said Justice Yuwa’s elevation was earned on merit, not through patronage or favoritism, assuring the judiciary of his administration’s continued support in building a strong, independent and credible justice system in the state.

According to the governor, the new High Court judge’s appointment should serve as a strong message, especially to young lawyers and judicial officers, particularly women, that excellence and diligence are recognized and rewarded within the judicial system.

He emphasised that his administration had drawn a clear line between the executive and the judicial arms of government, assuring that courts would neither be intimidated or used as instruments of political convenience.

Alia highlighted his administration’s achievements to include the appointment of more judges, improvements in the conditions of service, investments in court infrastructure and consistent respect for judicial autonomy.

He charged the new judge to uphold the highest standards of judicial conduct, warning against undue influence, pressure and inducement.

The governor also cautioned that while the judiciary enjoys independence, it is not exempt from accountability, warning that its independence must not translate into impunity. He stressed that the people are tired of delayed justice and judgements that offend conscience.

Responding, Justice Yuwa promised to deliver justice in the fairest manner with the fear of God.
