Neymar Scores First Goal in Five Months, Calls It ‘A New Beginning’

Santos forward Neymar scored his first league goal of the season on Wednesday, netting the winner in the 84th minute against league leaders Flamengo. The Brazilian star celebrated the moment as “a new beginning,” after a challenging spell marred by injuries.

The 32-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the first time since February 23, a milestone in his gradual return to full fitness following a long-term ACL injury sustained while on international duty in October 2023.

“I’m really happy to contribute in every way, both in attack and defense,” Neymar said post-match. “In my opinion, Flamengo is the best team in the league. We showed that we can play against any team in the Brasileirão.”

Having turned down an opportunity to feature for Fluminense at the FIFA Club World Cup to focus on his recovery, Neymar appears determined to reclaim his form.

“I’m not 100% yet, but I’m getting better every day,” he said. “Playing and training regularly is part of the process. My body is still adapting.”

Since returning to boyhood club Santos earlier this year following his contract termination with Saudi club Al Hilal, Neymar has struggled with recurring muscular issues. He has yet to return to the Brazil national team.

Recently, he extended his contract with Santos until the end of 2025, with an option to remain through the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
