No Parallel Legislature In Zamfara – Speaker

Date:

Speaker of Zamfara State House of Assembly, Alhaji Bilyaminu Moriki has denied any parallel assembly in the state, saying  Zamfara has only one legislature.

Moriki stated this while addressing newsmen in Gusau yesterday.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that  10 suspended members of the Assembly had, on Wednesday, held a parallel sitting in Gusau.

NAN also reports that the development had led to the factionalisation of the Assembly, with a 13-member faction headed by Bilyaminu Moriki (PDP-Zurmi South) as Speaker, and the other one comprising 10 members under the headship of Bashar Aliyu (PDP-Gummi I).

Moriki described the declaration of another Assembly by the suspended lawmakers as uncalled for.

“You know we have issues with some lawmakers who were suspended by the House since last year over violation of rules.

“As I am speaking with you now, the matter of their suspension is before the court. Therefore, the action they took is illegal and null and void.

“This Assembly remains the only legitimate legislative body authorised to carry out legislative duties in the state.

“Since there is a pending case before a court of law on this matter, I will not comment further until it delivers  judgment,” he said.

Moriki, therefore, called on the general public to ignore reports of any parallel Assembly sitting in the state. (NAN)
