Darkness Hits Abuja As Vandals Destroy Transmission Lines

Date:

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company ,AEDC, has reported that recent power outages in parts of the Federal Capital Territory are due to vandalism of conductors on the 132 Kilovolt Katampe-Central Area Transmission Station Lines 1 and 2.

In a statement released yesterday, AEDC identified the affected areas as Wuye, Utako, Jabi District, Zones 1-7, Wuse, Areas 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8, Maitama, parts of the Central Business District ,CBD, Durumi, and surrounding areas.

The company stated, “This is due to the vandalization of conductors on the 132KV Katampe-Central Area TS Lines 1 & 2″.

While a specific timeline for restoring electricity was not provided, AEDC assured that the Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, is actively working to resolve the issue.

“Please be assured that we are actively engaging with TCN and relevant stakeholders to ensure swift resolution”, the statement added.

A 132-kilovolt underground cable that supplied power to the 132kV Central Area Transmission Substation was stolen by vandals in a prior incident, which caused major power outages, notably at the Presidential Villa.

To help stop similar incidents in the future, residents have been asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
