Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, yesterday, inaugurated the House Committee on the North West Development Commission, NWDC, urging members to work hard and reverse poverty in the region.
Speaking at the inauguration of the committee at the National Assembly, Abbas also called on NWDC to consider multiple funding sources to be able to fulfil its mandate.
He listed different mandates of the committee, challenging members to ensure adequate coordination and monitoring of all activities of development partners to ensure effective transformation of the zone.
The speaker also urged them to engage relevant agencies, departments, multilateral organisations and non-governmental organisations to facilitate rehabilitation, reconstruction, recovery, resettlement and development in the North-West region for the betterment of the people.
Home to over 47 million Nigerians, Speaker Abbas stated that the North-West is not just a demographic powerhouse, but also a reservoir of cultural and economic potentials.
Earlier in his address, Chairman of the committee, Sulaiman Gumi said the inauguration “marks a significant moment as we embark on the noble task of transforming the North-West geopolitical zone.
“This first interaction between the House leadership and members of the committee provides an opportunity to strengthen our collaborative efforts, ensuring excellence in the commission’s operations and encouraging maximum cooperation necessary for achieving impactful results.”
He listed the mandates of the committee to include addressing all matters related to NWDC; coordinating and monitoring the activities of development partners to ensure effective transformation of the zone.
