Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-General YD Ahmed has expressed optimism that corps members will soon benefit from the new minimum wage.

The director-general, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists during the official closing ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course for corps members deployed to Nasarawa State, held at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Keffi, on Tuesday, stated that the federal government had always made corps members a priority.

“While we are expecting that the federal government will do something about it, whenever there is an increase in minimum wage, it looks at the plight of corps members.

“So, we are praying that as soon as implementation commences, the federal government will consider corps members too.”

He also advised corps members to abide by the rules and regulations of the scheme in order to enjoy their service year, adding that the NYSC management at all levels will work round the clock to ensure their safety.

“We are doing a lot, from the commentary you heard from the MC. Very important lectures were given to them when they were in camp on how to stay safe.

“Besides that, we have given them a pamphlet on security matters and we also talk to them on issues that are not expected of them, particularly night travel and also not boarding vehicles from the roadside,” the NYSC boss stated.

Earlier in his farewell address and to declare the orientation course closed, Nasarawa State governor, Engr Andullahi Sule, represented by the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Sports and Youth Developments, Barrister Isaac Danladi, reminded the corps members that their service was not just a chapter in their lives, but a testament to the shared commitment towards building a stronger and united country.

In her welcome address, the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Salamatu Muhammad urged the corps members to always approach their activities with humility and spirit of selflessness.

“Focus on making positive contributions in your host communities, serve as exemplary ambassadors of your families, NYSC and our nation at your places of primary assignment,” she stated.
