Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, has set aside N31.5 million for Youth Skills Empowerment Programmes.
Its Executive Chairman, Mr Christopher Maikalangu, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja at the inauguration of the first phase of the empowerment programme
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that no fewer than 700 youths benefitted from the first phase of the empowerment programme.
While inaugurating the programme, Maikalangu said the beneficiaries will be given working tools after the trainings and urged them to utilise the opportunity to become self reliant.
He also admonished the youths to embrace vocations and hand work rather than staying idle, searching for white collar jobs that are not readily available.
NAN reports that the beneficiaries are expected to be trained on ICT, metal welding, hair dressing, barbing, tailoring and car-washing.
“Every year, we produce a high number of graduates from different colleges, universities, polytechnics, both private and public.
”Where are these graduates going to get jobs? The best way is to assist yourself in acquiring skills and that is why we designed this programme in such a way that you will select the best area you think you can make a living.
”After this training, we are going to buy equipment for you to start your businesses and become employers of labour,” he said.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to NAN expressed gratitude to the chairman for finding them worthy of the training.
Miss Mary Bala said she has been looking for opportunity like that for the past four years since she graduated from the university
Bala, therefore, thanked the chairman and promised to utilise the opportunity for others to benefit from the gesture. (NAN)
